Minnesota could waive and stretch Layman (which increases tax room to 3.5 million) and sign Ennis and Cousins. I think Ennis is significantly better than Layman

I really like Ennis fit here, but I also wonder if Layman can have a good year for us, before toe injury he played the best basketball in MIN. I see why he can be productive under Finch:
* - Layman is probably the best cutter, which is important according to this https://www.indycornrows.com/2020/10/6/21501224/how-chris-finch-could-invert-the-pacers-offense-with-continuous-spacing
Cut assists
Something else both of those teams had in common (DEN and NOP)? Cutting defenses to ribbons. Per Synergy, during Denver’s breakout season in 2016-17, the Nuggets were one of only four teams calling cuts on over nine percent of their possessions. A year later, when Finch moved to New Orleans, the Pelicans jumped from 25th in cut frequency to seventh, and here’s the thing: That’s only counting possessions where the cut directly led to points, free throws, or a turnover.

With improved ball movement Layman can be an effective weapon: he is a big, mobile, athletic wing who can shoot, run in transition

* - he has contract year
* - he is a decent, active defender, has high steals, block %s

Will be interesting to see what they do with Porter Jr. now. He might be in line for a max pay day from somebody if they let him become an RFA after this year.

I’d be stunned if they didn’t offer the Max but his stats that this upcoming season will determine that. Good observation!

I don't think that's in doubt.

I have to imagine they're worried about the lux though. Assuming everyone picks up their options (i.e the Greens player, Nnaji team) and my math is right on the Porter/Gordon extensions, in 22-23 they've got 10 players under contract with a 160mil-ish payroll which is about 10mil over the lux. For a small market team that really doesn't pay the tax, they'd have to be damn sure that's a championship team (which, with Murray presumably just coming back from injury, they probably aren't).

Might be an interesting case study for us, especially if we're able to get Simmons.

If we do trade Beverley or Dlo for Simmons, I'd want to give Isiah Thomas a chance.

I'm sure that going 10 million over the lux is more than fine for what is basically a guaranteed home court team in the West and a team almost guaranteed to reach the 2nd round in the playoffs, with potential to go even further. I'm not well acquainted with the finances of the NBA teams, but it feels like the Nuggets should be having big profits with their consistent success, despite their geographical market size.

Plus Jokic is eligible for the extension next summer, so they gotta show the willingness to spend to put a contending team around him, in order to guarantee his willingness to sign the extension with them.

Only way DLo happens is if DLo privately wants out.

I’d take Tyler Bey on a training camp deal.

He didn’t really play. His time in the G-League was decent though. I would mostly want to do it to get him into Iowa to keep an eye on him and potentially groom him for a two-way deal (should Knight get signed long term).

Even if Bey came on a training camp deal he wouldn't make the team and would end up at Iowa. There were some reports that Knight could be moved to a standard contract which would open a two-way spot. I wonder if Minnesota may look at another big for that last two-way. They are still very small by NBA standards.

Are there any interesting young bigs who could sign a two-way deal?

Chris Silva just signed a training camp deal. He may fit the bill and is in his last year of eligibility for a two-way.

I doubt they keep him beyond the cut down deadline. Seems like their roster is full as is. I think we could maybe sign him to a 2 way or pick him now and dump layman for a cheaper contract at the deadline later.
