Michael Porter Jr., Nuggets Agree To Five-Year, $172M Extension

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Sep 27, 2021 9:00 pm

Michael Porter Jr. has agreed to a five-year max extension with the Denver Nuggets that could be worth up to $207 million.

Porter's deal will be worth $172 million unless he reached the designated max criteria as an All-NBA team selection.

The Nuggets now have three players on max contracts in Porter, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.

Even if he doesn't hit the incentives, this contract averages at 34.4 million over 5 years. MPJ is absolutely a star in the making. There's no debating that. But, some of these contracts are still surprising. The thing is, if he is able to reach his full potential, Denver is going to be essentially impossible to guard assuming Murray comes back strong.

Get the bag young man - get the bag!

Hats off to MPJ / his agent for securing a massive deal despite the initial setbacks on draft night & year 1.

Hopefully he lives up to the contract & then some -- more importantly, hopefully he stays healthy throughout the duration of his career. Very talented, just starting to show glimpses of the juggernaut that he can become.

Congrats MPJ - wish you good health, positive vibes & keep shining!

Well, in his 2nd year in the NBA he averaged 19/7 with a .542 FG% and .445 3PT%. He was #13 in eFG%. He had the highest USG% in the top 29. Zion was 30th. MPJ was also 17th in TS%. Durant was 16th. He can shoot and he's 610 so he's going to get that shot off. And before you point to his 112 defensive rating, take a look at his 125 offensive rating. Yeah he does remind me a bit of Gallo, but if he stays healthy he will be worth this contract.

The amount aside, did they need to do the extension now or could they have waited?

I think of the same, Clippers could have drafted him instead of Jerome Robinson. But chances he'd be at OKC right now because of the Paul George trade. Either way, I'm happy we didn't give him such a contract, like I'm happy that we didn't give Tobias Harris that contract and traded Blake while we still could.

Knowing the Knicks, he'd either be a) perpetually injured, b) they'd not develop him properly and he wouldn't become a max candidate, or c), he'd request a trade, or sign the QO before ultimately leaving to say, Miami or a LA team.

They could've waited, given the QO, then tempt RFA. I think they'd ultimately have to pay the max to retain him in RFA. By extending him, they probably got the last year partially guaranteed and were able to put in $30 mil in incentive based salary that otherwise might've just been fully guaranteed.

It's a good deal for the Nuggets and MPJ both. Nuggets retain a key piece of their team and become perennial contenders through their core's prime (health permitting). It was a move they had to make as they'd have no path to getting a player of MPJ's calibre otherwise.

How is he not? He's worth what the market will pay him, and you better believe there are teams willing to max him out. Young players with top tier scoring potential get maxed. Period.
If Denver doesn't give them this deal and he leaves, what path do they have to getting a player of equal or similar calibre, in order to maintain their contender status for the next 4-5 years? Right. There is none. If they win a championship, all is good.

He's a RFA next year. He aunt leaving. So you make him earn a max contract and if another GM is stupid enough to offer him a max, at worst, you match it. But don't bet against yourself!!

That's not generally the path that smaller market teams can take.
19/7 on 44% from 3 and 54% from the floor at age 22 IS earning that contract. How many guys on rookie contracts are doing that?
