Yup I remember how clear of a mistake this was at the time. Everyone hyping Simmons potential rather than accepting that Butler was the vastly superior player and increased that teams ceiling.
Imagine if they had instead resigned Butler and traded Simmons even for say Jrue Holiday.
Holiday - Curry - Butler - Tobias - Embid
This team would have had a really good chance at winning it all last year.

Jimmy left.
Because the Sixers wouldn't pay him.
Simmons went to Brett Brown after the playoffs when the Sixers had given more of the playmaking duties over to Jimmy Butler and told Brett Brown he was 'troubled' by not having the ball in his hands.
If anyone thinks that the Sixers simply moved Jimmy Butler because they didn't want to pay him and not because they were factoring in potential 'conflict' with Simmons they're delusional.

They could've did great things with Buckets still around. I didn't hear much about any behind the scenes rancor either.

Like Joel said, the team has been built around Ben, which I believe to be the case, and going forward things could very well be easier for Philly, but Ben needs to be traded first.

Embiid ain't ****ing around no more. Bullets emptied. Can't wait till he and the team come to Toronto next week for the first preseason game!
Also an underrated quote of his today: “I don’t get on the scale. It’s not good for my mental health.”

Jimmy says that even he thought it was messed up that Butler was given the ball in the playoffs over Ben. Jimmy cites a lack of leadership and a lack of weaving him and Ben together by coaching staff as the problem. He states that it was bad what they did to Ben, switching him off in the playoffs when he'd been running the offense all season. A killer for the confidence.
I think the reality of the situation just highlights the dysfunction in the Philly office. Colangelo really effed it up, Brand has been ok. I think Brown was probably the wrong coach for that team but they kept him for continuity. Talent has been mishandled.
I feel bad for Morey and Doc because they kind of just stepped into this mess too now.

I get where you're going but I don't think it's that simple, for two reasons. First I've had plenty of work drama over the years and I definitely reframe narratives about what happened to make them simpler and more about my own values and control. I'm someone who's pretty low-ego and generally very honest with myself but still try to do that to make it seem like my principled disagreement about something was why something happened, rather than a more complicated chain of things. Butler also seems like someone who's really into that type of thing (in a good way, I really like his blend of humor and sort of folksy, 'look it's simple...' way of talking).
Second, in this video Butler specifically mentions both a) Simmons being very upset about losing touches and b) him leaving because the team wasn't sure about him and was worried he wouldn't fit their personnel experiments. Both of those point directly to the Sixers being concerned about the fit of the 3 all-star guys that year. So the root cause could easily be that question of Simmons and touches.

You can come up with other narratives. Maybe Jimmy left because of aliens and now he's covering it up.
All you have is the truth Jimmy has given here, Jimmy of all players is going to give you the truth.nhes saying some very controversial things here, why would he say them? He doesn't have to speak at all.
If you choose not to believe what Jimmy is saying on the topic of why he left then you want to have a pretty solid line of evidence to refute it.

Essentially putting the blame on Simmons for Jimmy leaving -- Wow. Joel not holding back anymore.
For what it's worth they should have never let Butler go, that was a big time mistake

Yawn. I was a vocal Fultz critic (thought he was maybe the 3rd-5th best prospect that year) but there should be no high horses in sight when talking about him. A player who was a phenomenal college shooter with a quite large and consistent sample size just totally un-learned how to shoot. His game totally fell apart as a result. We've never seen that happen before, so no it wasn't reasonable to criticize people for failing to see it. I think Ainge was totally right to not see Fultz as so much better than other players that he was worth another good lotto pick, but Ainge himself will be the first one to tell you he didn't think Fultz would be a mega-bust who would suddenly and completely lose his primo skill.

I used to dislike Embiid because he always destroys the weak frontcourt of my Hornets. We never have a chance to beat the 76'ers because of him. But I think he's now my favorite non-Hornet in the league. I hope he dominates this year.

Especially when the organization turned around and decided to pay Tobais Harris Superstar money.
Obviously there were more reasons for Jimmy's departure, but some of those can still be linked to the Sixers just in general not having 100% interest in keeping him. If the Sixers were really adamant about keeping Butler, the treatment would have likely been different I think.

If Simmons truly was the PG of the future that they envisioned this entire time, then it really makes no sense to trade up for and draft another ball dominant PG.. And then to give him away for mere pennies a year later is an absolute disgrace.
