GOAT of actual 5'11" and under

Post#1 » by Hoop Heavy » Sat Oct 2, 2021 6:29 pm

Hello,

First let me address the last effort. The GOAT of 6 ft and Under Poll which happened here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2125361 and then here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2125532.

We restarted when I agreed to accept guys listed as 6'1" with "shoes on" and filled in the field. In both polls, Chris Paul won. Still I have to call foul on myself as John Stockton got missed in the conversation as it changed. Also, it was pointed out that Isiah Thomas (Detroit bad boy) was being confused with Isaiah Thomas (Boston scoring wizard) and so lost votes because for most people the former is far above the latter.

So with apologies to Chris Paul, I'm going to run that poll one more time. Still, we aren't going to do that now. I'm tired of that poll next to proceeding with the next two - "GOAT of 5'11" and under" starting here and "GOAT of 5'9" and under" coming soon.

Probably we'll just have four contestants IT (Detroit), AI, Stockton and CP3 in the final repeat of 6ft and under. There's only two or three guys who got any sort of votes beyond them. Primarily, Kyle Lowry and Muggsy Bogues are expected to do very well in these two more diminutive polls, so we'll just tighten up the field for that final re-vote including Stockton. Feel free to influence these decisions with comments here.

Okay - forward. Lowry and Kemba Walker have been accepted as actual 5'11" and I have a list of enough candidates to start. Of course, like what happened to Stockton, I have little confidence that we have the "very best list" right now. I'll leave an "other" and if I find we've totally gaffed again by excluding a worthy candidate, then we may have to re-vote this one too. I've learned on the last one changing the poll in any way causes all votes already made to be lost. That sucks.

Okay have fun. Thanks for voting (and re-voting).

EDIT: Resetting poll after ten votes. Included Mark Price and Damon Stoudamire - removed JJ Barea and Nate Robinson - both of those guys will be back on for the 5'9" and under poll.

Is there really a difference in height between Lowry and Chris Paul?

IMO it would be Nate Arcibald, Zeke, Iverson and CP3. Guys like that come around once in a generation.

This gets a little speculative for guys officially listed at 6 feet.

I'd definitely put Mark Price (officially listed at 6-0) in the voting, if you think he qualifies on height. Lowry is the only one on that list I'd take over Price.

If you put Michael Adams in, Damon Stoudamire should be in too.

Did anyone argue that Kevin Johnson should have been in the 6 feet poll. He's officially listed as 6-1 but if you consider him to be actually 6ft even, he's among the best at that height.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I voted "Other". Nat Holman comes to mind. ;)

I'll acknowledge it's tongue and cheek to a degree (if CP3 is actually under 6 feet, I think he's better and he's not the only one), but if you're looking at this as "Who is the best volume shooter under 6 feet?" you're essentially asking "Among those too short to design a great offense around as alpha mega scorer, who held you back the least if you let him play the role he shouldn't play."

Holman has the advantage of having the best total career achievement of anyone in the first half of the 20th century, being ultra smart, having his game focused on working with others as a cohesive whole rather than chucking, and being 5'11".

He won't win (nor should he), but Damon Stoudamire deserves a mention. He had a real solid career with Toronto and Portland.

Thanks for the quick responses. Yes, I'll take Price, Stoudamire and Johnson all over at first impressions over Nate Robinson. I'll reconsider who to keep and cut and restart the poll immediately. I'll check Holman too. There is only 4 or 5 votes right now. I'll research and reset it.

Rightly or wrongly those guys are all considered between 5'11" and 6ft. We'll redo that poll later. Maybe Tiny should get a crack at making the final poll.

I will also nominate KJ. Pretty sure he's like 5'11. Both classic 90s guards

For this, we are saying "shoes on" counts as 1" to 1.5" and so if you are listed at 6'2" (Lillard) you don't qualify. I agree that we don't know everyone's actual height and I'm also unaware of any NBA players database searchable by height - might exist. Anyways, no offense to guys we have missed.
