thought it was pretty obvious that this would happen as opposed to keeping the play going and having to award points lol.

other sports have streakers and that's what they do.

Yes, that's the only thing officials can do; I guess the thread is more about what should happen.

People forget the most tragic incident of this-

Monica Seles.

17 year old Tennis player who was dominating and about to take over the world and a fan of her biggest rival shoves a 9" knife blade in her back during a time out. She was never the same player again.

Can you imagine that happening today?

Yes that was horrible, but that's not what this thread is about. I'm talking about what officials should be able to do in the event that a fan interferes with live-action play in a manner that likely prevents a team from scoring.

As far as I know there's nothing in the rule book about it, although it's incredibly unlikely to ever happen. Still though, the NBA should cover itself and put something in writing. Right now I expect all the refs can do is award the ball to the team that had possession, but there's nothing in the rules allowing a technical to be assessed or allowing the officials to award points, which should be the case.

(Serious thread unlike the one that just got posted and deleted)

What's to stop me from wearing the jersey of the team I'm rooting against, doing something like this just to intentionally get the team I'm actually rooting for free technical shots? Don't think that's a good rule.

I propose fining any fan who does this lots of money. That's the best deterrent.

We now have a fire alarm interfering with an NBA game.

This crosses my mind now and then. It's almost unbelievable to think it actually happened.

Also didn't a fan join pre game shoot around with a team in the last few years? I forget the team but it wasn't noticed immediately

Not a bad idea to have a plan for this situation, but I also think people underestimate how hard it would be to coordinate something like this in a way that would be timed correctly, effective, and worth the legal consequence. If we're talking live ball action fast break, most players can get from baseline to baseline in 3-5 seconds, and it would be tough to get anything done in that small timeframe. The NBA is just going a different speed than fans can insert themselves into effectively.

That said, its not hard to imagine an out of bounds play to win the game where the defense somehow allows Curry a wide open three in the corner, and a fan right there on the baseline interferes to make them re-inbound. Not sure what the solution to that would be, besides just re-inbounding.

It has parallels to the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan situation.

I don't know what happens but the game should be sacred. Any fan that interferes should be rightfully beaten up by the crowd. Not the players so no one gets suspended or anything.

It didn’t affect a live play but a Nets bodyguard attacked PJ Tucker on court last year. I was very disappointed how it got mostly swept under the rug. Having a team employee run on court and instigate violence against an opposing team’s player is beyond unacceptable.

That was Kevin Durant's personal bodyguard, IIRC.

You can't just fine a fan though. You can certainly take them to court and sue them though. And a lifetime ban is also obvious.

Baseball rules account for fans though, right? The problem with this play is it was dumb to get in the way of the team you are rooting for. If he did this with the other team taking the field, he wouldn't be villainized, he'd be a hero.

This one?

Hilarious. It is fun only as long as there isn't malicious intent.
