What Donte's best case scenario if he was given free reign on another team? Kings version of Mike Bibby?

Kirk Hinrich maybe? Not sure it's worth consideration really.

They're definitely allowed to extend him right now, he's a tough one to figure out but imo 4/60 is about right which means Donte is probably asking for a bit more than that and the Bucks are probably offering a bit less.

I’d toss 4/20 at him and see if he takes it. He’s on a scooter and has never had a fully healthy season including playoffs. Anything he turns down is a huge gamble because if he gets hurt this year, he’s only getting 1+1 prove it deals just above the minimum. Most teams don’t care than one statistic thinks he is Jordan level off ball on defense.

I’d probably lean towards retaining Grayson if they had to choose one because he seems to be able to stay on the court more and his shooting unlocks the offense more. Making teams pay for throwing extra bodies at Giannis is the most valuable thing they can do. Unless someone is unplayable defensively of course.

Donte is making 4.7 right now and his QO is for 6.6M. 4 for 20 is WAY too low. I think you're off base that he'd be getting 1+1 prove it deals above the minimum. He'd get a 1+1 at around 15-17M total pretty easily. He's the type of guy that teams take shots on. Caruso got 37 million, that's probably close to your baseline on a long term deal otherwise he'll just hit free agency. Hell, Zach Collins played 11 games last season, re-fractured his foot in June, and still got 3/23.

I'd definitely put that Caruso deal in front of him and be comfortable with it.

I would guess that almost every team who has it available would give Donte the full MLE if they didn't know the Bucks would match it before the offer sheet was all the way out of the printer.

Donte needs to prove he can be healthy. Sure doesn't seem like the Bucks think he will ever be a guy that's available more than he's not.

If he comes back looking just as athletic and shooting around that 35-38% 3PT mark, 4-yrs $60 mil always seemed like the appropriate price tag for a Donte extension. The issue is that I really don't know if the front office would wanna pay him even that much regardless of the health concerns. Grayson might be the cheaper but also better fitting option with the starters.

The best ability is availability.

I’d be extremely weary of giving Donte any four year deal. He could end up eating an important salary slot while sitting on the sideline in street clothes and a walking boot for a bulk of the years.

Hinrich is a good comp. Donte is more athletic, better rebounder and finisher. Hinrich was a better shooter/distributor/ball handler. Both scrappy as hell and guys you most definitely want on your team.

I think the Bucks need to sign him at a number they can trade at anytime regardless of injury or not. I have real doubts that Donte or the Bucks are really even close on the number tbh. No way Donte is looking for a bargain deal and no way the Bucks are going to give him what he wants. Grayson being traded for was the nail in the coffin for me. Not sure what that means for this season or next, but Donte starting the year injured is just brutal for the Bucks and him.

I imagine Hollingers system is assuming health. With the way advanced metrics seem to love Donte, the 4 for 99 would make sense for his projected value. I really doubt he gets anywhere near that but I could see where he gets 4/60, stays healthy, and very easily out plays it.

If Donte could get that contract, he should be worth something in a trade and you move him.

Can they trade him in the off-season in a sign and trade? How does that work with them being in the tax?

They can trade him this offseason and the team getting him could immediately extend him if they wanted.

They can trade him in a sign and trade next offseason, subject to normal trade rules (although depending on his salary, you might have to maneuver around what used to be called the Base Year Compensation provisions). You get hard capped if you acquire a signed-and-traded player, but not if you send one out.

I love Donte. In a perfect world he would remain a Buck. I think his defense would have been such a huge asset during the rest of our playoff run. That said, Hollinger is right about his offensive fit with us. Donte is our best young asset and we already traded him once. I think we need to see him fully recovered, extend him, and trade him for a proven vet that isnt happy playing for a bad team.

Meanwhile, Hill can be added if needed to get us to around 22-23M in returning salary

I'd go 4/36 max for Donte. He's a fine role player, but won't ever be anything more than that. Being on the Bucks makes him look better than he actually is.

I don't think you realize how low of a contract 4/36 is in today's NBA. That just isn't happening.

I think the Doug McDermott level deal is a decent benchmark for Donte

3yrs/$41M, roughly $13.5M per year

Give him a player option after year 2

I look at the guards the Bulls signed this summer and see the Bucks' offer and Donte's ask:

Caruso 4/37
Lonzo 4/85

ive been as big a fan of his as anybody but his health issues have now become a deal killer for anything but team friendly contracts. if he wants a sizeable deal id prefer to look elsewhere. really unfortunate honestly
