How bullish is everyone on Josh Giddey?

Post#1 » by HoustonCougars » Thu Oct 14, 2021 2:30 am

Not a super flashy player, and doesn’t shoot that well. Yet, his playmaking and passing for his size is just so fun to watch. I read that he’s only 18, so man, I look forward to seeing how this kid develops. That is all, I knew nothing about him before today.

He looks good, glad to see he's living up to the pre draft hype so far.

A better question would've been how giddey are you about his future?

Very

Just looks like such a good chance he plays like a legit 3rd guy/big 3 type role. Put a "The Guy" on that team with SGA and this guy Giddey?

Watched 2 of his preseason games and he looks quite good. His shot doesn't look nice but it's been going in and his passing looks very good. I'm giddey about his future and think he'll be up there for rookie awards, particularly since he's in OKC and will be given every opportunity to do so.

Yeah, I'm very bullish.

People may not know this but Giddey has been trying to model his game on Doncic over the past few years. Giddey coming into the draft didn't mention this (because it's ridiculous to say) but years before he has admitted that he's actually trying to build his game towards Doncic and uses him for inspiration.
I'm very glad he has been doing this because their body type, athleticism and IQ are quite similar. They differ based on skills right now.

He will not reach Doncic levels but if he keeps working on his moves then he could be to Doncic as Sabonis is to Jokic.

his feel for the game is elite. I didn't mind the pick mostly because everyone after the top 3 was extremely flawed and all grouped together as prospects. I'd rather bank on giddey's incredible playmaking and passing while improving constantly than some one like kuminga, who progressively got worse the more he played in the g league, is a subpar athlete outside of straightline speed and vertical ( really lacks lateral movement and "twitchyness), terrible touch around the rim and broken jumper. Or someone like jalen johnson who for being incredibly skilled for his size and being a banger athlete is a head case.

He's a good prospect and no one should be surprised at that, was a legit very good starting PG on his team last year despite his size and age. His shooting off the dribble seems like a question mark and I'm wondering how impactful he can be if that doesn't improve a lot (which it definitely could). His upside seems to be sort of recent Gordon Hayward-y if he can get the shot going: a big secondary initiator who can spray passes to anyone open on the whole court, take open lanes if the defense gives him one, and hit jumpers from all over. That'd be a very good player to have for the next decade.

But he will also always be a guy who needs a pick--or two or three--to get an inch of breathing room and, given that and his on-ball shooting, I'd peg him as a lower volume type guy if I had to place a bet.

Not as bullish as the Thunder but I liked him pre-draft. To me, he has some of the strengths and limitations of Kidd more than Doncic. Not as much of a barrel to the rim but his height could help.

That's one hell of a tall backcourt between him and SGA.

Interesting player, looking to see what he can do.

Is he an MCW type?

Nah, He's more like a 6'8 Ricky Rubio.

I'm quite bullish. He's a true 6'9 which is massive for a playmaker so he can see over everything. His wingspan is only 6'8 though, but he seems to be quick enough. Seems to have a great feel for the game and I hope he plays aggressively. Everybody loves tall playmakers.

hopefully his jumpshot and finishing develop better and earlier

Learning to defend like rubio would be awesome as a treat

Finishing and being able to create separation is definitely the swing skill for him in terms of ceiling.

Bullish that he will be a star. However, very likely OKC loses him or SGA. They have a history of losing stars.

I know he grew a couple more inches recently. Wouldn't his wingspan possibly have increased as well?
