Jason Kidd is actually doing a good job.......

Post#1 » by Pinkyring » Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:57 am

He took a lot of crap when he got hired but we look like a different team particularly defensively, he also looks to have unlocked kp both offensively and defensively who has been very vocal about not liking the way Carlisle used him. Im not saying he's a better coach than Rick but he could be a better fit for this roster.

Really? After just three PRESEASON games? Come on now.

RealGM is really the land of hot takes and overreactions.

Coaching is just as much about establishing the right orchestra of assistants and managing the locker room as it is X's and O's (many also done by assistants). TBD what he's learned since his first stint. He was an extremely cerebral player and very green in his first head coaching stint. Think what we will about J Kidd the person, he certainly has potential as a high level coach. We shall see.

He has been a Head Coach 2x already and was a clown in both destinations. His time in Dallas will be relatively short and will end badly.

You can't evaluate a coach based on the health of a player. KP has looked good so far because he has no been healthy for an extended amount of time.
He is still struggling on the offense with a little indecisiveness and lack of go-to moves. But since its preseason, no one cares about those mistakes & turnovers. Let him make mistakes in order to learn is the current (& correct) strategy.

The best thing i could say about Kidd is that he's a decent motivator. But even saying that you need to qualify it by saying that he struggles to keep his team bought-in for the long haul; especially since his aggressive defensive scheming wears down guys.
Hopefully, with competent assistants around him, Kidd won't make some of the same mistakes he made on his last stops.

I don't even include Brooklyn as he was essentially still a player and it was a year but fair enough if so. He's spent time as an assistant under true head coaches since then after Milwaukee, we'll see how he handles it. Very few players have exuded as much bbiq as him to me when playing, so I do think it will likely translate for him now that he has some experience under his belt. Not exactly over here rooting for him, but I think there is a good chance he fairs far better than most are expecting.

Dallas improvement this season will largely hinge on the health of Kristaps Porzingis (primarily his ability to return to a net-positive defensive player). While Jason Kidd may end up being a good fit for the team, Porzingis is the key factor.

Having followed a Jason Kidd-coached team for three and a half seasons, I'd say the true test is how adaptive he'll be in the long run. Even if his defensive scheme works for now, the rest of the league will eventually run circles around it if it's just another one-trick pony.

His scheme in Milwaukee—which basically was just blitzing every high screen as if the ball-handler were Stephen Curry—helped attain the second-best defense in his first year, but that ranking plummeted to #22 just the following season. Why? Because he had no fallback once other teams started exploiting it, which especially came back to bite us with the upswing of three-pointers every following year.

I don't have any insight to Dallas's defense at the moment, but I wouldn't jump to any optimistic conclusions from the strong start—even if it carries over into the regular season for a while. Some teams simply start off in a dominant spurt because opponents have yet to catch on to novel gameplans or because they're responding well to the new locker-room voice, and that isn't sustainable in itself. Maybe he'll fare better this stint—it's possible he had an epiphany from shadowing Frank Vogel in LA, or perhaps he enlisted the appropriate assistants to do what he can't—but his track record so far proves not to buy into his early breakthroughs.

We learned in the off season how dysfunctional the FO and coaching was, and it was clear some players weren't happy, especially KP, now they play more relaxed, RC is a much better coach than Kidd, but in the situation that transpired, him leaving was big addition.

I think he now proved he's the best coach in the NBA.
If Dallas wins the season opener, he's the GOAT.

Did some Top 20 player join the Mavs, or why is not making the finals considered a failure? You can't rely on Porzingis' health and a team with Hardaway Jr. as your 2nd option should be happy if they make it to the 2nd round.

I'm not gonna give him credit until he overachieves. I think Carlisle got scapegoated for no reason for the internal corruption Dallas has had for the last few seasons.

Kidd is still growing and evolving as a coach. Honestly, he can only get better the more he works at it, like anything else. It shouldn't surprise anyone.

Might be a situation where luka and pork reach that next level just as kidd becomes coach. Kinda like kerr. So its both the natural development of players and of a new coach/system.

KP was awesome under Carlisle two years ago. He played poorly in the playoffs that season and much of last year because he had a hard time recovering from injury. It wasn't because of the way the coach was deploying him

RealGM is really the land of hot takes and overreactions.

I mean poster said, "looks like" and "could be", those are about the least conclusive statements possible. Basically just statements of hope, not really what I would call a "hot take".
