Current projections have canada at about 75% to qualify for 2022

No reason why a country with Canada’s wealth and resources shouldn’t qualify for nearly every World Cup.
So happy to hear there's a 75% chance they make it to the world cup. Just like you said there's no reason why a country with Canada’s wealth and resources shouldn’t qualify for nearly every World Cup.
Knowing this its been truly frustrating hopefully they pull it together with basketball soon as well. The fact that we have the 2nd best basketball talent pool in the world but cant make the Olympics is crazy we should be competing for medals

As Canadians, we're so lucky to call him one of our own. Not only is he one of the best players in the world, he also seems so likeable.

Proud of our boys. Need to finish off Costa Rica and hopefully Mexico in Edmonton next month. Those are make or break games.

"In the making?" Alphonso's already a superstar. His passion was unreal that game. You can tell he wants to rep Canada, which is a nice change for a program that's had its share of snubs (I'm still pissed at Owen Hargreaves).
Having said that, it really should have been 6-0. Panama was abysmal and our defending needs to tighten up. Also, a couple of our forwards' decisions with the ball were shocking.
Here's Davies' goal for those that didn't catch it:
I don't even care for Soccer or Futbol but got damn that was impressive. Can't teach heart/hustle.

Re: OT -Davies
28 posts and noone's mentioned it was out of bounds yet? Lol. Canada has taken enuff lumps to enjoy some good fortune.
The new world Cup format makes a Cinderella run more likely. I still remember 1986....our only moment of hope is we almost kept France to a 0-0 draw but they ended up scoring late second half.
Great game though. Awesome to see the vibes. Let's hope Edmonton comes through when they play commonwealth. We may need to send fans there from BC and Toronto.

Find me a single shot that shows the ball clear of the line and I'll mention it was out of bounds

So, can anyone guess what the top speed Davies' run reached on that goal?

With basketball it not about the talent anymore It is about putting in the effort to build an actual team.
The Qualifier team had more than enough talent to qualify for the Olympics. Canada Basketball brought together a group of guys who have never played together before, had them practice for a few days (didn't even get a full week in), play not one exhibition game and threw them into the most important tournament in 4 years woefully unprepared. 1 or 2 exhibition games and that team would have been fine. They need to find a regular group of guys and get them some experience playing together. Otherwise if this is going to be the ongoing approach they need their superstars to show up (SGA, Murray) and just carry them.

Buchanan is moving to a champions league side in January.
Canada has world class talent upfront that can now compete with just about anyone. It was hard for Canada to score goals previously, not anymore.

Agree.
It’s more difficult for Canada basketball to get its act together for a few reasons.
First, playing for your NT isn’t as prestigious in basketball as it is in soccer. In soccer playing for your NT is a huge deal and usually signifies you are an elite player. You often need to play for your NT to get a visa to play in European leagues (if you are non European).
Second, in soccer you play with your NT numerous times a year, throughout the year. In basketball you join your NT maybe once a year (if that) during the off season when guys want to rest. Complicating matters is there is little/no break between the NBA playoffs and NT duty. And NT duty coincides with free agency. Guys can’t risk getting injured during the summer and then lose out on tens of millions in NBA money.
Third, because of the above point, guys have limited time to play together. Even if you bring the best talent together, you still need to develop chemistry.
There are likely a few other points as well. Anyway, if we want to be serious about qualifying for 2024, we need to get our best players together beginning next summer and have that nucleus carry us through qualifiers and the Olympics itself.
On talent alone, Canada basketball is probably 2nd in the world and worst case scenario, probably too 4 in the world.

Me too. He started his career as a forward.
Although he is one of the best fullbacks in the world, I think he could do even more on the wing. His offensive talent is being wasted.
The problem is Bayern is always loaded up front, they don't need him to score.
He should stay there for a bit longer, win a few more cups and then go somewhere else to play up front (assuming that's what he wants).

He has a long career ahead of him so will get more opps to play as a forward.
Also, it’s not like we can question Bayern since they did win a CL last year with him as a WB.
As a Canadian though, I hope he soon plays as a forward at the club level. Elite attackers are harder to find than reliable defenders. Any team can build a system to limit goals conceded but few have the attacking talent to score regularly. We need Davies to eventually develop the skill set to average 1 goal every 2 matches for Canada.

Well, Bayern's interests lie toward developing him where they most need him, not necessarily where he wants to play or where he would be best. Bayern has plenty of good players up front, so no need to play Davies there.
