I hope it's Iwundu, but expect it to be Nick Richards. Either way, neither is NBA caliber... I just think Richards presents a tiny bit more upside, and I believe in giving 2020 draft rookies another year, just in case. Richards has shown absolutely nothing though, and there's absolutely no reason for him to be here while we have Kai Jones.

I know it makes loserX sad, but he's not really ever been an NBA caliber player so he had a remarkable run and made a lot of money. But just no reason for an NBA team to be giving him a roster spot.

Monday I believe

I believe the deadline is today by 5pm to not have the roster charge though.

either our reporters are dragging or the Hornets simply blew right through this deadline... now what?

If they blew threw it, the players cut before Monday would also get paid for Monday as they have t cleared waivers, and Charlotte would have like an extra 20g on salary on the entire season.

Conversely, they would have paid an extra 20g intentionally to someone they want to be on their g league system and come back to them when they have an opening. And if the player is claimed, there would be zero salary cap hit.

Iirc, Philly intentionally went past the deadline around year 2 or 3 of deep process to get some players extra money.

I want to guess Caspar ware (or Vander Blue?) but worry it wasn’t him and he will object.

Oh short answer. Literally no issue at all unless you are a crazy tax team.

is that only for nonguaranteed contracts? we have 16 players under contract at the moment, all guaranteed their salary for the year.

also I'm going to point out that Nick Richards is for some reason nowhere to be found on the Hornets page on bb-ref.

Wonder if they know something the rest of the world doesn't? https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CHO/2022.html

If here all fully guaranteed, there’s no rush until the absolute deadline. Maybe they’re still trying to find someone to eat the contract in trade instead of waiving it?

Exum should be on a roster. At the very least lakers should pick him up.

Yeah, if they are fully guaranteed then they are fully guaranteed and none of that matters.

Yes, this guys is legit, and no, I don't think it's a good idea unless the extension is uber team friendly which it almost certainly will not be.

Is it relevant if he's legit since he's making it very clear this isn't reporting but just an opinion?

Also it seems odd to have basically agreed to a lucrative extension but still be openly shopping him something you could never keep hidden from Sexton's agent.

It also seems likely to burn the extension negotiations to the ground by “holding off so we can see if we do better elsewhere by trading him”.

If you want him, you sign the extension. If you’re shopping him, you don’t want him.

Or, you know, you want him at price point A, but not nearly as much at price point B.

But at that point, “the framework of a deal” wouldn’t be in place. You’d still be negotiating it. Unless you mean that Cleveland has a deal worked out that they don’t like but are willing to sign Sexton to it if they don’t trade him for a different deal? That seems like a waste of salary if so.

Hopefully, they're asking themselves whether whatever number they arrive at is palatable if Sexton tops out as a super six man so long as he's on the Cavs roster. The answer to that question can be pretty complicated. I'd say $20M per is too much, but $20M per would be fine if the the new $8B TV deal actually materializes and the cap does in fact go up to $170M (I'm more skeptical than most about those projections). So there's some midnight baseball here in terms of projecting not only a player's growth, but how that contract will work out going forward. There's also the issue of whether Sexton is going to buck about coming off the bench and whether you believe what the agent sitting across from you says when he's trying to negotiate a $100M+ contract for his client.

If he'd really take $20M per right now, please trade him to Dallas and I'd be glad to give him 4 years starting at $20M with max raises and a TK. He's flawed for sure but productive enough to make that word especially since the Dallas PG is big and because DFS can defend PG's if Sexton can't.

And this is where I'd say we'd probably need DFS coming back this way, and you say you'd lower the protections on some 2025 pick, and I respond that whoever Altman's successor is could end up be grateful for that.

Yeah finding a deal could be tricky. :D But I'd definitely overpay in other assets to keep DFS out of it if at all possible. And I think Cleveland wouldn't really value him much unless he also agrees to an extension as part of the deal. Would suck to take him back as a big chunk of the Sexton value only to have him leave in a year.

But if he extends with Cle and he's part of the price, I'd pay it and just be sad. And Bullock and Brown would become vitally important.

I think it only makes it more difficult if he's extended. You have to keep the Cavs out of the tax, match the PPP, and that's probably going to involve sending Cedi or Powell to OKC which they won't do for free. The Mavs could just match any offer next summer. Cuban's not afraid of the tax.

I meant DFS getting extended. Not worried about the Sexton end and Cuban paying up. I think Cleveland wouldn't want to take back DFS as a big chunk of the Sexton value without knowing they have him beyond this year. He fits great, but they have to be able to keep him.
