We won't have cap space regardless to add something before signing him. We are far enough over that the difference between his cap hold $16 million and the start of a max $29 million won't create room under the cap.

So the Suns would have to renounce him to even have cap space and what free agents are out there that would be able to replace Ayton? My guess, not many. But Sarver would go out and sign a "Meyers Leonard" for whatever as its "close enough." They are both tall.

As a Jew I gotta say I would violently hurl if we got Meyers Leonard

I put Leonard in quotes - I coulnd't come up with a name
Like when SArver chose to not sign Amare - but he signed a bunch of stiffs to long term deals.

Its a bold strategy Cotton - just have to see how it all plays out

I was very frustrated by Ayton's finals performance and his attitude after the loss, but the truth is they get no where near the finals without him last year and this is likely going to hurt the team chemistry, Ayton bought in last year and didn't demand the ball or whine about scoring saying he was doing what the team needed and the team needed him to be the defensive anchor, i could easily see that changing this year and him more worried about his offensive numbers and less concerned about doing the team first things since that's what typically gets you paid most often.. hope I'm wrong and he comes out to prove Sarver wrong, but either way i can easily see him asking the Suns not to match next year feeling unappreciated here. So sick of the Suns management building a decent team only to screw it up again potentially because Sarver is unable to do what's needed to keep the building blocks in place

The Suns will nip ever rumor with 'we'll match any and every offer'.

As for trade talk. I don't expect anything unless we have a really poor start to the season and he's part of the reason.

The thing is, some team could offer him a 4 year max deal with a player option in year 4. Meaning instead of 5 years, when we match, we only have him for 3 then he opts out and goes elsewhere.

It would actually be smart for him to opt out after 3 years in his second contract if someone will max him because the max level jumps to 30% of the cap after 7 years in the league.

You may not above that he can only get 4 years with another team, so the difference in the difference in total deals is a bit misleading.

A 4 year deal in his 3rd deal is also actually better if someone would give him the max for his 4th deal because after 10 years it jumps to 35% of cap...so his 1st year of his next deal would be more than that 5th year anyway.
This^ by letting him hit RFA you lose a ton of control on the type of contact he will sign.

Should also be noted his QO is $16.5 mil so while he would lose some cash playing on that next season it's not completely out of the question.

I wonder if CP3 was involved in the Ayton extension talks in any way.

King4Day wrote:The biggest worry I have here is, his agent may tell him, "go easy this year...don't get hurt and there are plenty of teams who have told me they will offer you max next year"

If he doesn’t have a great year then I don’t think he will get max’d automatically. He will need to play at least as well as he did this past season.

There’s already talk in some circles about how Ayton is only good because of CP3. I don’t really agree with it because Ayton still impacts the game defensively so much even without CP3 and scored decently in games that CP3 didn’t play (first two games of Clippers series for example).

I do think Sarver wants to see consistency from Ayton before paying him. Can he do it for two straight years or was it just a contract year thing last season? That might be Sarver’s and James Jones mindset on this.

Yup, needs to sell the team to someone who can actually afford to own it.

I'm sick and tired of this franchise. Just going to become a Laker fan I always admired them from afar.

Thoughts????

Called this **** earlier in this very thread. It's the only way for $arver to save face if he bungled this Ayton deal.

DA, Cam(since he's too cheap to pay him too) and Saric for KAT.

There was talk he was engaged, not sure how far along, with the guy that bought the Jazz

He probably could have made a lot of money - but I think his ego is pretty big right now.

As to Ayton. Might as well trade him for KAT now, it's over and he's gonna sign the QO. They should make the move now so that they can get chemistry and not have anger and saltiness in the locker room.

I agree Sarver doesn't have the money to run the franchise how it needs to be ran, but I also don't mind this strategy with DA he needs to stay motivated and another year to really come into his own it was widely reported cp had to continually be on him last year, he was ok with losing in the finals, talent wise max all day mentally not there yet. I don't see him going to another team he would ha e to be the alpha on most teams that could max him and he isn't an alpha he is a supremely talented pack dog...
