This is why it's always important to wait until the actual contract details come out before reacting. The two non guaranteed years make a huge difference. This is basically the suns bettting he takes a leap in their system.Saberestar wrote:

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
That 3rd year is hopefully completely non-guaranteed. So basically almost like two team options on the final 2 years.
Still a bit of an overpay to pay him $10M for this season and next considering what Payne got. But eh at least it’ll keep Monty happy, Shamet is like a son to him.

And once again, what we all know and preach is confirmed by this.
We got this season and next to win it with CP after that it could be a brand new team / clean house.

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
This deal is timed perfectly with Booker's next round of free agency. I would expect the Suns to try to extend Booker before his final year is up before the 23/24 season. If Booker doesn't extend and wants to test the free-agent market then at least we have Shamet under contract. If Booker re-ups with the Suns then the Shamet team option could be declined if necessary.

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
I take back the overpaid comments. I think this is a fair deal with the non-guarantees and team options in year 3 and 4. So essentially it's a two year deal with all the leverage on our side after year 2.

Personally I was reacting at the dollar amount, particularly in 22-23 when they will have the largest tax bill, and likely one of the sticking points on a Ayton deal.

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
I expect this deal to play out well for the Suns. Shamet has more playmaking ability than he's shown being a 3-point specialist on isolation heavy teams throughout his career and will be a good fit in our offense. It'll be interesting to see what his playing time looks like this year though, I was only expecting around 15 minutes per game backing up Booker.

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
I think this deal is great, yes the dollar figure is high, but would you rather
4/43, but basically 2/21
or
4/30 with no team flexibility.
This is now a tradeable asset, a good player locked in who might improve, and basically an expiring $10m deal in both 24-25 and 25-26.

It depends on if you think he's good or not. If he's good, I'd prefer the 4/$43, but if not, definitely the 2/$21 so I could get out of it earlier. I think either is very tradable though I don't see us trading him. Monty likes him too much.

I expect him to play around 25 mpg, he has never played less than 20 mpg in his first three seasons in the league and every team was a playoff team.
He will play minutes next to Book, he is not gonna be just a backup SG.

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
"I really like truly can say I haven't felt more right about an environment," he said. "Basketball wise. The people here. Way of life. Where I live. It's somewhere that it just feels right. That's the only way I can describe it."
"I wanted to get something done, glad that I did," Shamet continued after Tuesday's practice. "I have the utmost belief in this organization and leadership here. The team we have comprised. It feels good to get that done."
"I think I've been pretty consistent about the kind of guys we want here, but also when you see guys get paid, it's pretty cool," Monty Williams said.
"That's my job. I've said it before. We want to win games and increase the earning power of the players that we have in our program. To have it happen as quickly as it did says a lot about who he is, his willingness to want to be here."
"What we've seen so far and what we knew about Landry, we thought that's the kind of guy that could be in our program, but I think people think only in terms of offense," Williams said.
"Defensively, his ability to fight over screens, keep guys in front and the programs he's been in. He's been around vets. So he knows what it's like to go through tough days, long days, playoff days. And then you take the offensive side of it, it seems like it could be a good fit. We don't know, but we think it's going to be a really good future for him and us together."

Monty really likes Shamet a lot. I think him and Payne together in the backcourt can be a very effective tandem.

Well yeah, he said he's they type of guy he would want his daughters to marry and they'd been trying to trade for him for years. I love shooters though. I think I'll like him.

Yea just hope he holds his own defensively.

Playing behind a competitor like Book I'm sure he's show him the ropes.

I know your being sarcastic but Book is still a much better defender than Shamet. In the playoffs LeBron, and Middleton both used switches to get Booker off them after going 1 on 1 at him didn’t work too well.
Regardless CP3 will be the one in his ear just like he is with everyone else on the team.

I have just found it kind of funny how many have mentioned this for a backup SG who can get us buckets from anywhere off the bench.
Yes, Booker is a lot better now, but not before a couple years ago, mainly last year. But yes, just as Booker really stepped it up when Paul came and said that's the difference between competitors and non competitive teams...defense...it changed quite a bit.
But I read a Monty quote yesterday I think where Monty talked specifically about Shamet's impressive defense. Anyway, I'm not particularly worried about it. His role is to be a nice backup combo guard off the bench. Most of those you don't hear big worries about defense (Lou, Clarkson, Jamal Crawford of old, etc....never really heard people say I hope they can hold their own on D). I saw on the Brooklyn board even that he tries hard on D, get steals and stuff...not the best, etc, but it's not for lack of effort. As long as he is putting in the effort.

Re: Landry Shamet discussion, news and highlights
Landry Shamet expected to be out 7-14 days with his sprained ankle. All Star game is on February 20th so in three weeks but the hope is that he plays in a game before then.
