Post-Game Notes: BOS 134, NYK 138 (OT, 0-1)
I thought Brown and Rob played great, same with Grant. Tatum and Schroder stunk and cost us the game.
That Smart moment was great, but I've got very few positives honestly. Good mental fortitude to come back, that was impressive. But the team is going to be tired in two nights. Hopefully we beat the Raps.

Loss is on Tatum. That's obvious. He left a ton of points out there with his pathetic shooting.

Hell of a game.
Tatum needs to drive and not keep chucking and bricking the same shots all night when he's cold.

That switch everything defense is just not going to work. Turnstyle status all night and I doubt adding Horford to the mix will make it look any better. Change up the D and Tatum not looking like he spent the week in Miami should help to get better results.

Re: Post-Game Notes: BOS 134, NYK 138 (OT, 0-1)
What a way to start the season.
Three guys whose play I liked tonight: Jaylen, Grant, and Langford. The former doesn't need any comment, but he has carried some of his reaching habits. Grant was horribly overmatched so he should be given some slack and I thought his defense was still sound for the most part. Making his threes are a big plus. Langford continues to show up coming from the preseason. The Jays were great in their playmaking imo.
Now the bad.
The Knicks had energy and jumped on their fast breaks. Not only were the Celtics sloppy turning it over, their transition defense was terrible. Tatum may be on a slump. He needs to get it together as the defacto leader. Both him and Bob were getting their poo stuffed left and right. Speaking of Bob, he has a pretty stat line. Didn't like his general play as he was getting outhustled and a lot of the meat was missing in his play. There was a lot of easy gimmes he fumbled and I get the sense he's still somewhat lost. Same with Schroeder, but did we expect much different? Damn that guy has some low IQ moments and some major breakdowns defensively. Pritchard and Nesmith need to come back from summer league. Smart is the drug we all love to take, but hate the hangover. We'll never figure out to keep the high running, but damn does the crash make life so exciting. I'll excuse Ime as it's his first season, but he got punked by not subbing in some energy in any of the OTs. It's that old school coach thinking that if you don't have your best five at the end, you're going to lose.
The Knicks are on the same tier as the Celtics. This result shouldn't be surprising with Randle being a legit all star, guys like Barrett/Toppin rising, and their team having a real identity. They aren't the joke we've been seeing for almost a decade anymore. Best wishes for Kemba and Fournier. Crazy sequence leading into OT and the rest of the game.

Grant actually earned minutes in the end after a slow start. Brown was insane. One of those nights for Tatum where he tries to shoot himself out of it instead of being aggressive. Still a young kid learning. On to game 2.

Re: Post-Game Notes: BOS 134, NYK 138 (OT, 0-1)
Playing without Al Horford and Josh Richardson, which certainly weakened the Celtic DEFENSE, the Celtics committed too many turnovers (18 vs. 17 for Knicks), too many fouls (24 vs. 22 by Knicks) and shot poorly (41.0% vs. 48.6% for Knicks). The Celts did win the rebound battle by 1. And the Celts did manage to make a MIRACULOUS COMEBACK TO FORCE OVERTIME. But then Jaylen Brown missed a dunk he should have just laid in during the 2nd OT and Dennis Schroder missed a layup during the 2nd OT moments earlier.
Although I'm not going to make any conclusions on this year's team and chemistry until AFTER THIS SEASON, we can still look and see who is playing well night in and night out.
An alternative view:
Pts. + Rebounds + (0.5 x Assists) + Steals + (0.5 x Blocks) - Missed FGs - (0.5 x Missed Free Throws) - Turnovers - (0.5 x Fouls)
+40 Jaylen Brown (46 minutes)
+31.5 Rob Williams III (45 minutes)
+16 Grant Williams (31 minutes)
+13.5 Marcus Smart (46 minutes)
+8 Romeo Langford (23 minutes)
+7 Jayson Tatum (45 minutes) ugh ???
+6 Dennis Schroder (32 minutes)
+3 Payton Pritchard (11 minutes)
-3.5 Aaron Nesmith (11 minutes) not good

The ball movement was a lot better at times, but the switch everything defense had us confused on a couple of the Fournier/ Randle pick and pops. Overall great game and I doubt Tatum will have many games like this.

Thanks man, nicest thing i've read today, a team to finally be proud of.

Switch everything defense will take time.
What I don't like is having both Smart and Schroder on the court at the same time in crunch time.

My only complaint is the Ime Udoka bush league “let’s switch everything and give the other team offensive mismatches” defense all night.
Celtics are a .500 team if Udoka sticks to this style of defense. It doesn’t work!!
This loss was on the coach. Hope he isn’t stubborn and changes

Tatum looked like the same player from last year. Until the Jays start making others better this team has a capped ceiling. I can’t count how many times Tatum draws someone’s defender and he doesn’t even look at him. A couple times with Timelord were glaring.

really fun game to watch provided you don't care at all about defense or coaching. Must have been incredible to be there live. Tatum's new muscles altered his shot. He'll be fine. Brown's defense took a hit last season as his offense improved and it looks like the trend continues. I think this will be the last time you see defensive indifference towards Jaylen from other teams. He can beat you. You can't defend him with Fournier and Rose. It's no coincidence that he got sloppy and much less effective in the 2nd half once RJ and Randle defended him at times. Ime is a disaster as predicted, playing vets over more talented young guys. This is going to be a long season with lots of games like this. It will be entertaining but we aren't winning a championship with this squad and coach and that's sad. It'd be more palatable if we got a chance to watch our young guys play more though, maybe that'll happen as the cream rises to the top. On to Game 2!

Defense was a bigger problem. The easy buckets the Knicks got was crazy. Celtics missed a ton of good looks..nothing I've never seen. Usually not Tatum though. Half his shots were wide open.

Grant made some Big 3s but for crying out loud, he was unplayable on defense. RW shut down Randle except for one play. This Loss is all on freakin Tatum, but I already see RED Flags if IME plays so many Non shooters in crunch time. Schroder playing crunch time is so DUMB, sorry Schroder fans. the all will be in Tatum's and brown's hands, Basically negating what Schroder does well. any of PP-Romeo or Nesmith need to be given those open looks Schroder will get if he keeps playing late in games.

Heck if a game. Tatum will be better, didn’t like how many Minutes outr guys played. Ime was really hands off, didn’t make many adjustments and let the game breathe, maybe a little too much.

agree. Fit matters so much, not individual talent. Shooter, shooter , shooters.. > Vets who can't shoot.

Let down a potential historic MSG game by Jaylen.
