Williams is solid. Smart isn't a PG but he's a decent defensive guard who can hit some 3s and move the ball. There's a lot of pressure on their top guys though because their bench is rather bad. If teams push their effort, they run out of steam a bit. And both the Knicks and Raptors are high compete level teams.
The Wizards are loaded with rotation quality depth so they have fresh legs all the time and can really push other teams' endurance. The Wiz look poised to thrive a bit this season if they can keep their effort levels up.
I think that with Brad Stevens moving up, the Wizards and Boston are moving in two different directions. Ainge was not their problem and Stevens was a good coach. I think now they're going to have all kinds of issues.
Kemba Walker was injured but also great veteran leader. His absence will affect the Cs.
I think they were already poised to have a few issues even had Ainge stayed. He relied heavily on robbing other teams in trades to stay afloat and I feel like those kinds of bargains are drying up (as Morey is finding out right now). I don't think Udoka is a fine replacement for Stevens but I don't think Stevens is going to fix what's wrong with their team. I'm curious to see if he tanks when things go sour or if he does something else.
Ainge is a good GM, but he has made a few cold-blooded trades with the Celtics summarily dumping guys whom they praised as being Celtic Forever type of guys. I'm talking about Isaiah Thomas, Kemba Walkler, and Gordon Hayward. I think the reputation has finally caught up with Ainge and he can no longer serve as the face of the franchise. Agents know about him, and players know about him, and ultimately, his rep has made it so that he is no longer capable of acquiring the big name free agents. Neither Anthony Davis nor Kevin Durant even took a meeting with Boston, for example.
I could see why they ultimately decided to retire Ainge. The part that's weird is promoting Stevens to GM. I guess he didn't want to coach anymore, but still, it's weird.
