Kris Dunn

Post#1 » by GrindCityHustle » Thu Oct 28, 2021 7:31 am

Dude is a defensive beast...yet teams don't want him?

I was kinda po'ed that the Grizz waived him and kept Merrill. Dunn is like the new age Tony Allen

Could it be locker room stuff?

Thoughts on if this is just temp or is he headed overseas?

Tony Allen's defensive highlights came against guys like Klay, KD, LBJ. I don't think the same can be said about Dunn. He isn't that impactful against elite players and offensively he's a liability. Going overseas would probably help expand his game. I'd love to see him back in the nba afterwards.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

I think he uses tĂ´ risk too much going for steals leaving his Man open. Aldo he is not a great shooter

Because he is likes to play on the ball even though his playing style is much better off playing off the ball, i.e., his best role is a Tony Allen type player but he wants to play like AI / DWade. Probably due to the fact that he was drafted high and hence couldn't adjust his mentality.

Also, injuries don't help. Except his rookie season, he never played more than 52 games per season (2019-20 was shortened by COVID but he still missed 20% of playable games). And I suspect he lost some of his pace and athleticism after the serious injury he suffered last year.

I had a soft spot for Dunn when he played for us. He flashed some big games and is a dog on defence. That said, he just does not space the floor, and his floor game was too hit and miss (TO wise) to be an initiator on the ball. It kind of leaves him without an offensive role on a decent team, and he's not super elite/versatile positionally on defence to be a flat out specialist.

Dunn destroys your offense way too much. Teams literally ignore him. It's not worth playing 4 on 5.

Injuries sapped him of a lot of his defensive mobility then killed whatever little offensive game he had.

Ankles
Cant facilitate
Cant hit an open 3
Cant hit a layup

Good defender but gambles a lot, When you play with guys like Rubio/Morant/Young with obvious defensive holes you want your other guard defender playing within himself and doing the team thing,

So WHILE Dunn is a good defender, He's a dumb one, absolute liability on offense, injury prone and was moved because Atlanta would rather pay some stud wings 10m a season then Dunn 5m a season

He’s a very good defender, but gets into foul trouble often because of his aggressive play. He can be a solid role player off the bench.

Keeping Merrill was fine. He can at least knock down 3s and played his way into a roster spot in the preseason. Culver was the guy that should've been cut. Has never been good and was trash for the Grizzlies in the preseason and shootingwise he's worse than Dunn. I guess Dunn not being able to play because of a dental procedure really hurt his chances. But yeah the Grizzlies don't have 3rd point guard and need a 3rd point more than they need a 5th shooting guard which is what Culver is.

I agree that MEM should have kept him over Culver, who isnt a NBA caliber player.

Dunn is a better defender and shooter than Culver.

The only player Kris Dunn is conceivably a better shooter than is Ben Simmons.

Dunn is a better shooter than Culver though. Dunn has at least a couple season where he made over 30% of his 3s. Culver can't even do that.

I really like Dunn but it makes sense he doesn't really have a role in the NBA rn. The things he does are more noticeable and look cooler than the things most deep rotation guys do, and he's always looked the part of a great NBA player (impressive athleticism, strength, length, handle, sick crossover etc). But at the end of the day the things he does well are just not as impactful as what other rotational options do. His athleticism and size still translate into being a lower-volume creator for himself and others and he also can't play any semblance of a 3D type role because of his shot, and his athleticism hasn't translated into high-volume finishing either.

NBA players are really good is my main take away. A dude like Georges Niang or Garrett Temple doesn't look as impressive but they're actually really really good at what they do and the total output happens to be better than Dunn's package now.

He's Randy Brown and that's the role he needs -- playing on a defensive team as a fourth guard who plays with an offensive third guard (like Steve Kerr) who is more questionable on defense.
