What is the deal with championship teams visiting the white house?

Post#1 » by Tracymcgoaty » Sat Oct 30, 2021 6:53 pm

Explain that to me. Is it just to celebrate with the president and his vp? Establish connections with politicians after certain players retire?

I know this thread will probably get moved or locked. I just found it interesting. Basically teams celebrating with the current presidents during those times all the way back to 1800s

You got teams partying with Ulysses i find that **** hilarious for some reason

US residents you guys know why it's a tradition?

President = big man on campus, closest thing to a symbol of our democracy. Everyone wants to meet the big dawg, it's just the way it is. Every country has traditions that would look stupid to everyone else in the world.

It's just a way to honor for a team for winning a title. And it helps the President seem like a regular guy who likes sports. So it's become a tradition over the years, and a fun moment for all involved, but not a huge deal or anything.

Yeah it's just a cool honor for the team to get a private tour of the White House and meet and share a meal with the president, and it's good politics for the president to show an interest in sports and get their pic taken with popular sports figures.
Win-win.

Its just a tradition. I think a lot of countries have something similar, maybe not with clubs, but in my country, Olympic winners and basketball gold winners get national order of honor, what is the point of that, just to celebrate great athletes I guess who make their country more famous. Its cool, I have no problem with any of it.

It's been going on for a long time. Championship teams visiting the White House has happened since championship baseball teams in the 1860s were invited by Andrew Johnson

They should visit the United Nations with most of the world leaders clapping for them.

Eh, fair enough, but I would love to go. They probably get a chance to go places in the White House most people don't get to set foot into, like the Oval Office.

They should meet Kim Jong Un instead. He's a big ball fan, create some sports diplomacy.

Started at some point in time and they just kept doing it, that's usually what the case is. Why they started I have no clue and don't care enough to Google right now, probably some patriotic reason or something.

The last couple presidents have been an absolute embarrassment but I’m sure it’s still a cool experience to see the White House

Im the reason the tradition started and keeps going is because it makes the president look like one of us (a regular schlub who likes sports)

Going to the White House and meeting the President is boring? Man, love or hate the president, I would always go (well, except Trump, but he was a special case of bad).

Plus I bet the food there is incredible.
