What other Canadian city would be the most feasible for an NBA team?

Post#1 » by D.Brasco » Sun Oct 31, 2021 1:07 am

I think it'd be a shame if the Raptors always remain the only NBA team in Canada, especially when the sport now is bigger in Canada than it was in the late 90s when there were two teams in the country.

Vancouver would be an obvious choice since it used to have an NBA team but where else?

It's Vancouver

American's have culture shock in Toronto -- Imagine what they'd think of Calgary or Edmonton, let alone anywhere East of Ontario.

Montreal would be tough, I think. Would probably feel like playing in Europe to the average American player.

If NBA players consider Toronto "White Vegas" imagine what'd they have to call Montreal? which is actually way more Vegas than Toronto is.

Fun city to visit, probably not where Americans would want to live though. Cold, French, etc.

Hell,10 years ago no one even wanted to play in Toronto, and we still don't attract Free Agents. Montreal would be so much worse, a difficult place to attract, retain, and develop, talent.

Vancouver is a no brainer. But aside from Vancouver, could any others support an NBA team?

Speaking French could be a draw for French players and French-speaking African players...probably not, but you never know.

Yeah, I could see Montreal being a hit due to the nightlife and all the porn stars they produce. Their fans are also super passionate.

But it's also a super racist city.

Why not? Montreal would be the 6th biggest city in the NBA if they had a team. OKC, Milwaukee, Memphis, Sacramento, Detroit etc. are all tiny markets (in terms of population and economy) compared to the major cities in Canada.

I want to say Montreal because I think Vancouver had its shot and they blew it and Montreal is the only one that could be viable IMO. But I think the "culture shock" might be too much for these players to handle as they seem overly sensitive to these things. I certainly felt it and I was only there for a visit. I don't think these guys will ever get over the language barrier for one.

Hamilton

the calgary-edmonton corridor is closing in on 4 million people, the fastest growing region in canada. gdp per capita is about twice as high as it is in montreal. they can support a team, the only problem would be will nba players like the culture.

Calgary is closing in on 1.5 million people. Could definitely support a team there. Very underrated city too.

Only real viable city is Vancouver, anything else is simply not feasible.

Vancouver and it's not even close.

It's very unfortunate that the loser (Michael Heisley RIP) took over the Grizz with his main focus to move the team to Memphis.

The GTHA could support a 2nd team, like the Clippers or Nets equivalent.

Toronto Raptors vs Brampton Yutes. I could see it.

Return to Toronto Raptors
