I think Deron actually had mental health issues that killed a lot of his motivation and forced him to walk away. I think he may have legit been depressed throughout his Nets tenure and he never got back to what he used to be as a player, and he totally lost whatever passion he had for basketball.

Came here to say exactly that, which is why a boxig match doesn't seem like the greatest idea for him...

Who's paying for this stuff?

Like, why is this nonsense so popular? I'm ashamed for having even just read this thread. :-?

Is he already broke? He made 157M and probably some low 8 figures from endorsement deals.

It doesn't matter how much money you give to some people. They'll just take a bit longer to go broke.

I doubt he would go broke in under 5 years. Probably just wanted to try combat sports for fun. Hopefully he isn't as bad as Nate was.

What does the sport have anything to do with it? It's not like they're fighting for world titles or being seen as a legitimate fight in the eyes of the boxing community. The jokers are the people paying for the Paul fights and giving these celebrity bouts credibility.

I came here getting ready to say something along the lines of, "talk about the weirdest career comparisons someone can make."

To only be surprised that this isn't the most random career comparison, but they're actually boxing (not fighting). With no knowledge on either one of these guys when it comes to their boxing ability and even though Deron has a huge height advantage, Ill go with Gore.

I think its more to do with the fact that these kind of fights have become what most consider the sport to be nowadays. Normal boxing events dont come close to the numbers that these fake matches do. These idiotic clown matches have sadly become the face of the sport.

Frank Gore had 650 rushing yards last season. He's really giving up on coming back to the NFL for this huh? Like any remote chance a team was interested in him will be gone when they find out that he's fighting Deron Williams in a boxing match.

Frank is 38 years old. He put 650 rushing yards on a team that was one of the worst in the NFL and was pretty much straight up tanking for Trevor Lawrence. Adrian Peterson is 36 years old, a better RB than Gore ever was and the better player now. It took Derick Henry going down in week 8 for Peterson to get a call.

Gore's NFL career at 38 years old is done. Everyone has known this.

He’s 38. It’s a miracle he made it as long as he did as a running back. No team has interest.

I’ll be rooting for Frank.

As a boxing fan I still can't believe it's come to this that celebrities boxing gets just as much attention as actual professional fighters fighting. And the sad part is the boxers and promoters don't realize how irrelevant their sport is to the mainstream so they think(and have thought) that nothing's wrong with boxing.

I'm getting flashes of Snoop crackin' jokes while Nate lays motionless on the ground for 5 minutes. I've never been big into boxing or MMA but this just seems like such a bad look for all parties involved.

Sadly I can't disagree. Boxing's reputation is as low as it gets, but this isn't what should represent modern boxing, these circus acts don't come close to what we just saw a few weeks ago from Fury VS Wilder for example which was one of the greatest heavyweight boxing matches ever.
