Position aside, do people really think Simmons has a comparable defensive impact to Gobert? One is the best rim protector of the last half decade, the other is a wing.

Playoff Rondo is a monster.
Playoff Simmons goes the other direction.
Ben playoffs = 13.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, .571 field, .520 ft (but .707 in 2018 and .575 in 2019)
Rondo playoffs = 9.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 8.1 assists, .457 field, .609 ft (and the most Rondo scored in the playoffs is 13.7)
bruh, those numbers arent even correct. what player are you talking about.

Also, Rudy doesn't pass out of open dunks.

So playoff Simmons has better scoring, rebounding and fg% than Rondo.
And their assists are very close.

Pretty sure Rudy Gobert’s overall fg% is irrelevant when talking about teams putting smaller players on him that he can’t punish. His fg% is made up of dunks and lay ups from others creating for him or from rebound put backs, not post moves and creating for himself.

The Jazz would have a title by now if Gobert could punish teams offensively when they go small.

We don’t have offseason of gobert shooting 3s and it’s more common to see center not take them than guards passing on an open 3s

Two specific reason:
1. One is Simmons was overall #1 pick he has higher expectations unlike Gobert was the 27th overall and had already far exceeding his.
2. Gobert plays for Utah which the national media would prefer not talk about and ignore. Its the same reason there arent any national expectations for Jokic in Denver this year after he just won the mvp.

You're right, it goes without saying that Simmons is a better defender in the modern nba. As you say, all Rudy can do is protect the rim while Simmons is incredibly versatile. And as you imply, Rudy is not even in the company of the great rim protectors of the past - he just beats out the modern crop of Cs from the past few years, half of whom don't even care about rim protection.
Simmons is a defensive freak who would be elite in any era, while Gobert would be average in past eras with much better traditional Cs, and is too limited for this current era

Rondo's poor outside shooting was a discussion whenever it was relevant. Rondo had his best years before shooting became a premium, and since 14-15, he's been a 35.5% 3PT shooter.
Rubio is gotten a lot of flack for his poor shooting and inefficiency as a scorer.
Simmons isn't being criticized for not being a huge scorer, he's being criticized for his total unwillingness to shoot. Guys like Rondo were still taking jumpshots early in their careers. Also for the original comp, a C non ball handler not shooting from outside being compared to a guard primary ball handler doesn't even make sense.
Past eras with less focus on outside shooting and pulling big men out of the paint would not make Gobert's defensive impact worse, it would do the opposite. Yes, he's no great man to man defender, but most of the time in the league, the average opposing C one went against was not anything special. You had the top guys, then a lot of just big guys. Gobert would be better in previous eras in terms of not having an easier to attack weakness as he does now in the playoffs.SharpyShuffle wrote:HayKee wrote:Position aside, do people really think Simmons has a comparable defensive impact to Gobert? Well, he has had around 10 more seasons to get there, so that makes sense, generally he should unless Simmons was super lucky and landed on an extremely good team early. Most of Rondo's great runs involved either the Boston big three or recently Lebron, so there is some context to that, but he's had his moments.

He’s a center—everyone has long ago figured out the centers aren’t going to be plus players on offense unless a savant like Jokic or ultra skilled like KAT or skilled and physical like Embiid.

Gobert was the 27th pick in the NBA draft who has improved steadily over the years since he game into the league. Simmons was the 1st overall pick who has got worse since he entered the league. Plus Rudy is traditional C, they arent' expected to be scorers like wings. Its really not that complicated, its about expectations and position.
How is this even a question lol.

Big men don't need an outside shot, if they have one that is nice to have but it's nowhere near as big of a deal as the guards having one.
We live in a world where the only player on the court that can get away without having a 3 point shot is the Center.
