The book "Kleptopia" is a VERY worthy read

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/trump-among-the-kleptocrats/2020/09/03/db0fef02-ed5d-11ea-ab4e-581edb849379_story.html

And before the "Hey, but the Clintons", if we buy that they suck, and I think that they do, at the very least a smart Trumpeteer (not that there are very many at all) would have to concede that he's not the Cheeto Jesus after all, but another participant.

For the right wing, Marc Rich makes an appearance fairly early in the book, but well after his pardon. Shockingly, a little research reveals that Clinton got fairly intense back channel pressure to pardon Rich, because Rich was in the employ of a certain middle eastern country in an extra legal financial capacity. Which, by the way, doesn't make that country evil. Just that in this case, in the case of stuff with Trump, there's an only slightly reported other level to what is going on.

Let me put it another way. This book is INTENSELY researched. It provides names and locations and the history and SOME of the geopolitical reasons for what and why the dark money stuff goes on and IMHO only scratches at the espionage/power politics levels, though the are certainly talked about.

Anybody want a BETTER MASK than you've been able to get before?

One that:

  • Is MUCH easier to breathe through
  • Doesn't fog your glasses
  • Offers full NIOSH certified N95 protection
  • Is made in the good ol' U S of A
  • Is made by a huge American company - Kimberly-Clarke Corporation (they make Kleenex™ tissues)
  • Costs only about 80¢ per mask (for math whizzes, that's less than a dollar)
  • Easily available in reasonable quantities

I've used mine instead of a surgical mask for almost 2 weeks. I can jog in it and often forget I'm wearing it. It's very light, and even though it seals well, the straps are gentle and don't hurt your face, head, or ears.

The drawback? It is kind of ugly (looks like a Chinese KN95 worn sideways, but that's only aesthetics LOL)

Read about it here: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/where-to-buy-n95-kn95-masks-online/?utm_term=SurgicalMasks&utm_campaign=DailyDeals&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_content=BestofWeek

It's available on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NVDFB3R/?tag=thewire06-20&linkCode=xm2&ascsubtag=AwEAAAAAAAAAAfU7

[Note: I don't get a commission on it, but I think the above link sends a comission to Wirecutter.com, so if you don't want to support them, search for the same item on Amazon without using the link.]

When I wear this with my Dolan J. Trump "Make Knicks Great Again" cap, well, I know I'm not making a fashion statement but damm, these things work!

Those are good, too. But they cost 50% more so I can probably save $2 on an order. LOL (OK, my cheap genes showing through. It's a cultural burden I bear.)

But I do like the behind-the-head straps, which seem to do a better job keeping the mask in contact with my face.

Anyway, even a surgical mask is incredibly better than the one or two guys I see every day in the subway, wearing no mask or eating their breakfast. (Great practice, even before COVID). But I learned there is a another reason why they do that: most other folks won't want to sit near them, so they get a whole 3-seat section and a bubble of standing room all to themselves.

These masks fit the contours of my face perfectly using the ear loops which I shorten with a knot just enough to make them tight, but not painfully tight. There are no gaps on my face and there is room to breath. They are good but you need to read the reviews closely to make sure you're getting the right vendor that supplies legit Korean K94 masks. As always, there are fakes if you buy from the wrong seller. Amazon just doesn't give a damn

Yes, the Korean masks have a good reputation. I understand Amazon's difficulties in preventing counterfeit products (although they should be forced to stop doing that), but when it comes to masks, there are not so many they can't verify the sellers are legit. This is just appalling.

Of course, they needed to sell us counterfeits to get enough money to send Bezos into space. Sometimes I wish they'd found enough $$ to send him all the way to Mars (with food and water enough to survive until the supply ship arrives). Wouldn't he just love beating Musk to Mars?

I'm masking up more now. Two nights ago I felt something in my chest like tiny mice nibbling. Nothing painful, but it was obviously covid attempting to colonize my lungs. I immediately took my usual cocktail of Oregacillin, Pycognenol, Quercetin and Vitamin C and it stopped the symptoms within hours and I've been fine since. I keep dosing to keep it down while my anti-bodies do their thing. I should be fine, but it is hard to know for sure until a week goes by so I'll stay on my regimen until then. Wild Oregano extract is a super powerful anti-viral and I'm very thankful I had it on hand. Pycogenol is pine bark extract and it is very potent too.

I got too complacent. I started hanging out at Panera Bread where coffee is $9 a month and the internet is strong. A small minority is masked here anymore and I got lazy about observing protocols of 6-10 feet mask on. Ventilation is pretty good at this location, but I will slip on the mask anytime sometime sits near me.

This is beyond frustrating. Immigration policy in this country jockeys between cruel and indifferent depending on the party.

Here's the piece and I quoted the opening,
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/biden-border-divisions/2021/11/07/e87c8630-3b24-11ec-a67c-d7c2182dac83_story.html

Illegal border crossings and coronavirus cases were both rising this summer when a group of Biden administration officials developed a plan to vaccinate migrants in U.S. custody, viewing the shots as a sensible public health measure.

But just before the plan was rolled out, it was opposed by one of President Biden’s top aides, Susan Rice, and other senior officials who worried that it would invite more illegal crossings. Some aides responded that migrants would not pay smugglers and take a dangerous journey just for a vaccine — but they were overruled, according to four people with knowledge of the reversal.

The episode reflects the fractures spreading in the White House over Biden’s immigration policies and his dismal ratings on U.S.-Mexico border issues. Several top aides want tougher enforcement measures and the president’s team is gripped with fear that any misstep could trigger a new crisis, according to seven current and former Biden officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the internal tensions.

A major policy shift or purge is not imminent, these officials say, but the national security centrists on Biden’s team have asserted more control, and the left-leaning advisers who pushed to quickly reverse President Donald Trump’s policies have lost ground.

The change is evident in several recent moves. The administration is expanding its enforcement partnership with Mexican authorities. It is adamantly defending the Title 42 health code used to “expel” border crossers. It aggressively used deportation flights to send nearly 8,000 Haitians back to their destitute homeland.

I think this is two things probably:

(a) A dumb idea because people are not crossing the border for "free vaccines" so it is irrelevant. It is just a sensible public health measure to innoculate the detainees to prevent the spread of covid

(b) when presumably smart people have dumb ideas that were generated due to "optics"

The low level insurrectionists seem to have been sentenced and now they're working their way through those who were confirmed violent agitators. As we can see they are not getting off. They are getting years in prison and others will get more than this guy did

They are working their way up the food chain to the organizers, the GOP congressional collaborators and then the WH

I think this obsession with optics has been holding the Dems back for a long time. The Republicans do what they want and then use their messaging to force fit whatever optics they want. I'm not saying that Democrats should seek to build their own misinformation networks like the right has, but they should at least understand that no matter how "safe" they make legislation, the optics will always be that they're too radical for a chunk of voters. They need to stop worrying about the optics for those folks because they're not winning those voters ever and by kowtowing to that sort of outrage, they cause disillusion from people that actually might vote if they felt like they'd get something from it.

Right now, I know a scary number of voters that are ready to sit out elections from now on and it would take an obvious nutjob like Trump to get them back out voting against.

Anyway, to fold this into COVID...optics have meant that measures that worked in other countries are treated as draconian and radical here. That has caused Dems to half-ass it at times for fear of repercussions. Like you said, the public health value was OBVIOUS in this instance and they came up with a crappy excuse to ignore the health implications. This party is frustrating and I'm back to hoping that Millenials and Zoomers can prompt a culture-change within it but all roads to influence in the party are still running through old-style donor-focused pipelines. I don't have much faith in Hakeem Jeffries taking over for Pelosi and doing a better job any more than I had in Schumer after Reid despite Jeffries being younger than the other three named. :banghead:

I totally agree the general weakness of the Democrats is their lack of conviction at times. Just because you are the umbrella party does not mean you have to equivocate once you've made a decision. When you make a choice you need to lean in and back it up.

I'm about to dive into educating myself about the whole exponential technology space after letting the whole crypto and blockchain phenomenon pass me by. One of the first Aha moments I had as I started reading is the distrust of institutions in general is a driver of technology now even though the irony is that when power accrues to new platforms they are functionally the new institutions.

The reason I bring that up is as I delve into this new reality I know I'm going to brush shoulders with all kinds of loose cannon philosophies that are driven by old political sentiments wrapped in a new skin. And I want to understand whether there will be commonalities of political reality that are actually decent or humane recaptured for the human race through various forms of decentralization or will it just be another vehicle for manipulation and wealth concentration.

I don't really worry that much about the Democratic Party anymore. I think this is going to be a demographics situation + voting rights battle + gerrymandering and I think all three factors are in play that should favor Democrats longer term. And TBH if they are going to be optics driven, and I think they will continue to be even if they lean left, I don't really have an issue with Pelosi or Schumer for a while longer. She's going to retire, but I think she is at least doing something very important and very well that is important to me which is seeking justice for trying to overthrow our democracy. Sometimes you want old hands with competence handling some issues.

Wrapping up, I'm saying I don't think younger generations are going to perceive politics outside of their simulacrum. They are going to create their own worlds of reality and how that atomization into discreet online communities will play out in electoral politics is a big question. I know many people who are not Trumpy distrust authority too so the new reality is not just about Umbrellas vs. Fascists, but about which personality cult will suddenly erupt and take over. It's coming and it could be sort of good or it could be very dark, but I think grass roots politics the way we grew up with in our respective generations is probably dying.

However, persuasion and memes will continue. And as long as the average person resists reading actual articles they will be malleable. Optics will determine a great deal of our future, so Democrats will have to both show greater steel and conviction, but they also need better optics generators than Susan Rice if they are going to leverage their native demographic advantage.

And I want to understand whether there will be commonalities of political reality that are actually decent or humane recaptured for the human race through various forms of decentralization or will it just be another vehicle for manipulation and wealth concentration.

I think we've seen some promising signs from a few Land Back initiatives and what came of them in terms of old sentiments through new philosophical lenses. I'm not super versed on the Land Back movement, but I saw some really terrible representations debunked recently and now I've become a lot more curious at some of the working examples that have popped up. Like this:

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2020/jan/03/the-bold-new-plan-for-an-indigenous-led-development-in-vancouver

Landback seems new to me, but there are ties to old progressive successes with their strategy. It especially appeals to me as the Infrastructure spending approaches stateside. Maybe we can take note from elsewhere to address some of the redlining practices that helped design our cities' infrastructures.

I don't mind Pelosi a little longer because I only see worse alternatives. That's why I was vehemently against the Force The Vote movement when it was popping at the beginning of this year (by a small but albeit very loud group of progressives). I want to replace Pelosi with a better option...Hakeem Jeffries has next though and I'm skeptical of him.

Schumer, I want gone. He's an example of getting worse because we respect some arbitrary tradition of "it's my turn because I've been here longer." I didn't like Harry Reid much, but he was a better leader for the party, tougher on everyone which is why we saw less power grab attempts from the Manchin-types. I've reached the point of thinking, anyone will be better than Schumer tbh, though I wouldn't mind him holding out long enough for Elizabeth Warren to pick-up more influence...I don't think we'll get anyone further left than her in a seat of real power without serious attacks from the establishment.

Clyde_Style wrote:Wrapping up, I'm saying I don't think younger generations are going to perceive politics outside of their simulacrum.

This is where the optics game gets especially scary...this new era is run so heavily by algorithms that provide plausible deniability to stakeholders that optics are really in the hands of whoever sets up those algos and which players figure out how to game the math first. Here's a book I keep meaning to read about the whole thing, I have it i Audible but I'm taking a break from non-fiction because I just discovered Stephen Frye's retelling of Greek Myths

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019B6VCLO/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Also, I think you have a point that grass roots politics is losing steam in the face of meme/social media politicking. We might be able to look at Frank Luntz and focus tested verbiage as a precursor to it. But I also wonder if frustrations will bare out similar to how it did for my generation. When Obama came up short of our expectations, we got OWS and that led to a bunch of grass-roots and local groups doing work locally...Bernie kinda brought all that together again, but progressives have fractured a bit since his loss this time around imo. I think optics will always be important, however we've reached an imbalance where optics are treated as more important than results...that can't happen. We have to help people and count on their ability to realize what helped them (aka the Obamacare strategy...all the repeal talk and hateful optics disappeared when Republicans actually had a chance to get rid of it).

The ball is rolling now. Refuse to testify under oath, go to jail. Pretty easy to understand. Sorry Kayleigh!

Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Thanks

That state of affairs substack newsletter is a good summary to feel where things are heading. There will be a wave sometime soon.

I want my booster shot. Getting impatient on the CDC approval for under 65 to get them. They approved children recently so hoping that decision is pending

If you just want the protection of a booster, you don't need CDC approval, just someone with a syringe full of vaccine who's willing to stick it in your arm.

I got J&J back in the beginning of March because that's what was available and at the time appointments were hard to get. Five months later I just made an appointment at a local pharmacy and got a full course of Moderna.

The advantage of waiting for approval is that you can officially add the booster to your vaccine card, since "fully vaccinated" status may at some point be redefined to include a booster shot.

I will probably get another booster after at least 6 months (I'm already in an eligible category), even if just to have it on my vaccine card that I've been boosted, since I had to get a separate card for my bootleg second vaccination. I have zero safety qualms about this, especially with the Moderna booster that is a lower dose than the initial course of shots.

OK, thanks for that. It is helpful and I will consider that. I plan on leaving the country by sometime next Summer so I could conceivably get a shot now and then before I leave to fulfill the full vaccination status. I do think approval for the booster is pending though so it may be a week or two away.
