In general I think we are underselling Cobys potential impact. Billy has done a nice job staggering Lavine and DDR but more scoring off the bench could be huge.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
If I remember correctly Siakam suffered a similar injury around a similar time. Siakam came back to game action today. With the news of Coby participating in full contact 3 on 3, my guess is we'll see him within a week to 10 days here.
I do wonder if once Coby is back, and if playing well, Zach will consider resting that thumb.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
Coby W/ passers like DeMar, Caruso, Vooch, Ball etc.
Coby W/ all-star caliber teammates like Zach, DeMar etc.
Kid should feast within this new system. I can't speak on behalf of his defense but he should very much consider himself auditioning for the Bulls for the rest of this season.
I believe he'll do well.
It'll really have us equipped for a good postseason run.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
If Coby comes back in a week to 2 weeks and has his shooting stroke going, he could be HUGE for Bulls.
Bulls were in all the games and lost in the final seconds so any help could be HUGE - a 3pt or 2 off the bench could be the diffference between Bulls 9-0 and 6-3.

I think we all may eat some crow when Coby comes back... Call it a gut feeling but I feel like he is going to have a breakout season as a pure scorer off the bench, also its easy to forget just how good a rebounder he is for his size and position.

I think your gut feeling may just be gas, but I'd be thrilled if you are right. I think Coby is going to come in and be defensive roadkill (but that may be less of an issue against bench guys) and his shooting will take a good month to get back to historically average levels.
I'm looking at elite shooters shooting like crap this season and am thinking the new ball is a problem for many guys (including Vuc).

Bullchit’s scenario could happen, but I agree what you describe is more likely.
I just don’t see how Coby can really break out as an amazing bench scorer unless he hugely improves his defense. If he’s a defensive liability it’s going to be hard for Billy to give him enough minutes considering how much he values AC and Ayo.
Here’s what I expect Coby’s role to be: Zach’s back up. And Zach plays 35+ minutes per game.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
While I've never been a huge Coby White supporter, that was when he was in the starting point guard role.
But the analytics are there and do show that he is very good as a catch-and-shoot three-point shooter, and that
is the role that I can see him succeeding in, on the 2nd team or even mixed in with the starters at times.

This Bulls need guys who can put up 3 point looks. Coby solves a big problem they have presently. It is hard to say whether or not Billy would value that contribution vs someone like Ayo because as of yet he has never had the option to choose between the two.

Excellent point. Additionally there could be “not entirely about each game” reasons why Coby could get extended run. Like to establish, assess, or enhance his trade value if the team internally has decided they may want to go a different direction.

I did have some gas last night it passed and I still felt that way about Coby so we shall see.
I have no doubt he will likely struggle upon first returning and there will be hundreds of trade Coby threads ranging from 2nd round picks to all star trade bundles but he will fill a need and I think he will fill it well.
I also think defensively we have had a lot of doubt and questions thrown our way as a team and we have faced them pretty damn well as a team. This team defence has DeMar, Zach and even Vuc playing adequate defence so I think Coby won't be to much of a detriment. Plus coming off the bench against other second unit players along side Caruso and hopefully Bradley gets some more run I think we will be fine on the court with Coby.
Coby has always just needed consistency in his shooting and effort and if he can get that off the bench, that's why I have a gas feeling that he will have somewhat of a breakout season.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
Bulls are dead last in bench scoring, and not by a small margin compared to good EC teams.
Bulls: 23.8 ppg
Miami: 43.8 ppg
Wizards: 37.8 ppg
Knicks: 37.5 ppg
Atlanta: 34.2 ppg
Bulls are also dead last in 3 pointers made.
Bulls are also dead last in 3 pointers attempted.
Bulls can't add more long term salary by trading DJJ & Troy Brown's expirings for a vet player.
All this clearly points to big minutes for Matt Thomas.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
I predict a 27 percent increase in Coby appreciation due not only to his relegation to his natural bench duty, but also due to his haircut. Trimmed, nobody can still think he's the 6'5" guard he was billed as, and so expectations will be adjusted accordingly.

That 6'5 thing angered me...I felt gipped. He may help his arms look longer if he grows his fingernails. Then he'd have good proportion.
Coby has been lucky that our bench scoring has been lacking. Unless he goes out there and Vuc's it up, he'll get a long leash in terms of entitlement minutes.

Re: Coby White discussion thread
I really think we need to temper expectations for Coby when he gets back. His skilset off the bench is exactly what we need right now but he's missed an enormous amount of time & basketball action.
I predict he's going to look pretty awful for about a month and people will call for him to be benched but will slowly round into form. I don't want him handling the ball much at all but rather essentially becoming a spot up shooter next to DDR for the time being, until he shows he can handle more.
