I'll keep saying this until it happens but Cam needs to be getting Carter's mins. As the sample size grows, it's becoming abundantly clear that Carter is a 3rd/4th string guard that only should get mins when people are hurt or getting rested.
It's not like Carter is playing huge mins anyway and his offense is a massive negative and his defense isn't that great either(especially when paired with Patty).
Playing Cam less than 10mins a game to get his feet wet, seems like the smart thing to do. Sure he can play the G-league but he'd still have to adjust to the NBA anyway eventually. Again, he can't be any worse than Carter is right now, so that's no excuse. Give him some spot mins and let the kid grow. The Nets actually NEED his offense in those all bench lineups. He doesn't even have to score. He has shown signs that he can penetrate and set up others. Let him work on that. It's really not that hard. Other championship level teams have given talented rookies/young players chances in the past, so this is not some unprecedented thing.
Nash is really frustrating in this aspect, as he tends to be stubborn on giving players chances. Example: Bruce Brown(this and last season), Bembry(you could clearly see in preseason Bembry >>> Johnson or Carter), heck even Claxton last season was obviously better than DJ and fit the switching scheme much better but it took forever for Nash to fully realize/trust that. Sigh

The bad...Vucevic has made most people want to tear their hair out all season, and until the end of the game it was par for the course. He misses so many open shots for a big guy with a good past reputation, and so far I've seen him dunk once under the basket this season.
The good...I'm aware that you guys were tired from a difficult schedule, and I'm sure that played a big role in the play but we also tend to have fresh legs at the end of games, so catching up near the end wasn't an anomaly for us. The rookie from UofI (Ayo) is sort of a fun surprise for us this season because he's not scared to run the court and drive hard (or shoot from the 3). That has been the norm so far too. Aside from Derozan and Lavine, we tend to have rough stretches where we're stuck at halfcourt and can't penetrate--this regularly leads to poor/missed shooting. That's where a few bench players including Ayo can spark us temporarily.
Bigger picture, I see that you guys are clearly getting better as the season goes on, so hats off to you. And I appreciate the feedback that some of you have contributed on our board.
I view Vucevic as an empty stats player. Without high usage, he provides next to nothing. if you give him high usage, you will suck because he gets his at the expense of others and his stats dont have a big impact on winning. defensively, you are better playing 4 on 5 then having him.
I didnt notice the rookie Uofi to really comment. he didnt stand out much.
I have always loved Lavine. with help and fit he could be a good player. pairing him with Lonzo was brilliance. the Vuc trade was god awful and Derozan is an ok fit but i think you'd be better off with guys like thad that were shipped out.
It seems like unless Lavine hits a super tough shot the offense is ugly and relies on derozan mid range or lonzo creating for someone. Maybe the bulls would suprise me but they were looking like who i thought they were this past week once they stopped playing scrub teams. I dont think the Bulls would have won, or it have been all that competitive if it wasnt 2nd of a back to back on the road/3 games in 4 nights.
the nets didnt really doing anything poorly other then some clear coaching lack of adjustments, but by the 4th nash seemed disinterested. KD did whatever he wanted. we got open looks. we boxed out and rebounded outside of long misses on jumpers. really it was effort/fatuge/focus related.
I get that perspective and agree on Vuc. I'm hoping we can get a replacement b/c we're short on bigs--Interested in a trade of Durant for Vuc? At this point, I consider us lucky to have the player shakeup we've had after years of bad player decisions under Gar/Pax.
If you like to watch Bulls occasionally, check out Ayo for the fun of it. He hasn't been getting a lot of minutes so he may not stand out a lot yet, but he's capitalized on what he gets and you probably have to get very familiar with players to notice it. To be fair, he wasn't a one and done in college, so he's had more experience in the public eye. Our upcoming schedule will be a litmus test of where we stand this year, so I'm excited/nervous to get a more comprehensive gauge on our potential.

yeah even if its not the perfect fit mixing it up is still a good path. we were there a few years ago. good luck, i hope the bulls do well.

Surprised Cam Thomas wasn’t playing, loved his game in college, I’m guessing just too raw right now. What a steal he’ll be in the long run.
Cheers, bud. You guys have a fun, focused squad this season.

You have a much better team, adding Derozan gives you a consistent midrange option and an attacker that collapses the paint, that helped open up the corners and the rookie there (Ayo) who seems to be a really good shooter and very quick playing both ends. I actually like Vucevic, hes just been in a slump. Lavine is a bonafide star scorer, and Ball was a much needed handler. Sometimes the group plays better than the parts and that is what you guys are seeing right now because it seems to be working.

This is more revisionist bs. Jevon Carter was fantastic in preseason, he was hitting over 50% of his 3s meanwhile Nets fans were talking about waiving Bembry to keep Sekou. Jevon has struggled a LOT offensively in the regular season, that cannot be understated. But downplaying his defense, which has been great, that's ridiculous. Nash has done the right thing with Jevon, giving him minutes in the first half to see if he makes a net positive impact. Jevon is a much better player than what he has shown for the Nets so far this season. There's a reason he was a fan favorite for Suns. That is not excusing his terrible offensive play so far but there's reason to believe he can turn it around.3pt_chucker wrote:I'll keep saying this until it happens but Cam needs to be getting Carter's mins. yeah... this is Shamet 2.0. poor shooting start and gets crucified. He has been better then solid defensively and has shown he can hit the three. he will be fine, and likely a fan favorite here too.

1) Ok, maybe I should've said I liked Bembry over Carter/James Johnson in the preseason. I assumed other Nets fans felt the same(saw some of this on twitter) but perhaps I'm wrong there. I saw some of that Sekou talk but that was mainly coming from fans who typically only look at size/physical attributes and not actual play.
2) Carter has been meh defensively so far. He can only really guard PGs and isn't really good at rebounds or creating turnovers. There's a reason his mins have dropped off to less than 10 mins per game. He was a fan favorite for the Suns because he played hard for every min and is a great reserve guard. I'm not trashing him, just saying he's an end of bench PG. I'm sure he can play better eventually but for the reasons I pointed out, I think his mins should go to Cam. (Not saying Cam will be amazing btw).

I'm rooting for this to happen but not going to hold my breath. No one is really "crucifying" Carter anyway, not while Joe Harris and Harden playing into shape exists...
Shamet faced way more criticism because he's a better player than Carter with much more upside, so fans were expecting him to be near his ceiling.

I love your take on the games because you know how to read teams and games and break it down exactly like it is. You are insightful.

Nash has done the right thing with Jevon, giving him minutes in the first half to see if he makes a net positive impact. Jevon is a much better player than what he has shown for the Nets so far this season. There's a reason he was a fan favorite for Suns. That is not excusing his terrible offensive play so far but there's reason to believe he can turn it around.
yeah... this is Shamet 2.0. poor shooting start and gets crucified. He has been better then solid defensively and has shown he can hit the three. he will be fine, and likely a fan favorite here too.
Carter is better then shamet, and a better fit. Carter is a tier below all-nba defense levels and a 36-38% shooter from deep in his own regards. that was a masterful trade by marks.

Sigh
Carter has been well above avg defensively. tougher to do in spot minutes to. 1.05 PPP allowed and +0.7 BPM with 0.5 steals in just 12 minutes and countless deflections. Not to mention the benefits of pressing full court every possesion, getting opponents to start their offense at 16 seconds on the shot clock and thward fast breaks by smalls of misses or inbounds plays.
He isnt playing because his shot wasnt falling. not because of his defense.

Carter sucks. Hes a good defender but awful offensively. I'm not convinced hes a good shooter based on a few seasons of low volume and minutes.
Hes getting left wide open and can't make ****. We knew Shamet was en elite shooter. Its not the same.
We need more offense right now so Carter doesn't need minutes. Free Cam!
