3 banked shots from beyond 24 feet, plus one from AD who was shooting 13% and 3 missed free throws from Miami late helped.. somewhat.

It’s been a while since I’ve watch a live game. Even when I’m home I always wait at least an hour after a game has started to watch it because I get to fast forward during the commercials and long time out reviews.

2 straight games when Vogel showed great courage to play players with questionable defensive abilities.
Malik Monk 34 minutes, Ellington with 21.5 mins, Melo with 37.4 mins and they held Miami to 105.5 ORTG, under 42%FG.
I can imagine Frank and his staff watching old tapes who Monk matched up with Duncan Robinson, how he did fairly well in the past.
If Vogel keep playing these guys and they ranked top 12 in DRTG for the next 50 games or so, then the Lakers would be in great shape, he should be elevated to Very Good to Great coach.

Top Defensive RTG on the Lakers:

Monk 98.0
Reaves 100.2
Howard 102.6

Bottom:

Bazemore 107.1
Davis 108.0
Bradley 109.5

Top NETRTG:

Monk 8.8
Reaves 8.2
Howard 3.6
Anthony 2.9

I expect that those two guys at the top in both categories will move back closer to the pack due to their having played a full quarter against the Portland third team. Likewise, they typically have not played against starters, unlike Davis, Bazemore, and Bradley.

Also, if you look at Basketball Reference, you will find a completely different set of numbers than the NBA gives.

thanks for the research, great work. Important considerations are
1. match ups, I can't imagine Monk being able to hound and keep in step with Steph Curry from 40 feet.
2. The tons of screens of the guys they are guarding. You see a guy like Herro scoring 27 points or Jalen Green scoring big, being initially defended by Bradley, but if you watch intently, most of their points came from solid picks and transition, but if you fail to notice, you would easily say Avery is a bad defender.
