Jordan vs Shaq 1 on 1

Post#1 » by Gregoire » Sun Nov 14, 2021 7:10 am

Who would win 1 On 1 in their prime under the following rules:

First to 11 wins (half court)
1 and 2 points
Both players have 6 fouls and if they foul out they lose
Both players are always in the bonus
1 FT after foul
loser outs
EDiT: 10 sec shot-clock

Jordan scores roughly 80% of the time from 2, 40%+ from 3, Shaq scores 100% of the time always on dunks and layups (assuming the refs let him bulldoze Jordan the way they let him play post in his era . . . which would not have been allowed in most other eras). IF it was 1 and 1, Shaq wins, but 1 and 2, it's close. Who gets the ball first? (Hint, they win most of the time)

Loser outs, Jordan has a good chance especially since he has 6 fouls and the ball will be presumably checked at the top of the key.

while quantitative analysis is valuable and has its place, i think these threads expose the flaws in perceiving a player as simply a bag of numbers. because it's tempting to say, "jordan is 55% from 2 but shaq is 60%! so it'll be a close one" or "well how about steph, he can shoot some 3's so maybe he'll win."

but unless 'shaq' is a nickname for kevin garnett that i was unaware of, he has 0 ability to prevent a guard from blowing past him every single time. and i don't see how he's going to get the ball into the post - is he going to dribble it for 20 feet while jordan to be mutombo? it would have been one-sided in jordan's favor.

With these rules IMO Shaq's FT would be a factor, so Jordan have good chance to go to 11 before fouling out (5 fouls).

I forgot about shot-clock.
EDIT: 10 sec shot-clock would be fine IMO.

Jordan could tactically foul Shaq when he gets deep inside position and Shaq would probably miss some free throws. The 10 second shot clock also hurts Shaq who would be short on time to back MJ in all the way to the basket. As others said Shaq would also have to give MJ space because of his speed and couldn't afford to foul. MJ would win comfortably IMO in this scenario.
