Nikola Jokic is currently demolishing the PER single season record

Post#1 » by Cubbies2120 » Sat Nov 13, 2021 7:15 pm

We're about 15% through the season and Jokic is currently head and shoulders above 2nd place (Giannis, set last season)

https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/per_season.html

Will he set the single season PER record this year?

In addition, he is currently leading the NBA in these categories:
PER (already mentioned)
Win Shares
Defensive Win Shares
WS/48
OBPM
DBPM
BPM
VORP

This is insanity.

I'll add that PER is adjusted each year so that the average PER is 15. This allows the measurement to be pretty useful when comparing different eras where different rules and playing styles resulted in different levels of statistical production. So Jokic's incredible PER can't be dismissed because of league pace, or different rules from this season, or something similar.

What the number is saying is that Jokic is outplaying a league average NBA player to a much greater degree than any other top player in history has outplayed a league average player in his era.

That said, Jokic has only played 15% of the season. I'm sure other great players have had hot starts and posted a similar PER 12 games into the season. All it will take is one or two bad games to drag that PER down.

Really impressive offensively. It looks like he's bored out there and from the commentary of his teammates, he sometimes is. Hes figured out the offensive side of the game so well, he anticipates plays at a rate that isnt matched by a lot of players. When you add in the typical height advantage he has on a nightly basis, he literally sees over people, which the rest of the league doesn't have the luxury of doing.

I will say, with a disclaimer that im being critical, without enough watching him in the season or seeing his defensive advanced numbers beyond these ones. They initially surprised me, but they also don't...

He slows the game down so much offensively relative to a league that has integrated a wing-heavy run and gun offense. Hes like Steph, in how he sets the tempo and pace of the game, but the complete opposite direction: his slow game. Which is the game that's played in the playoffs.

One nagging issue with the Joker is ive seen some teams with the right personnel attack him a bit more. Whether its the Warriors or Hawks?, the faster more agile guards give him some problems. Hes more creative as a defender than I've given credit for: clearly the stats speak for themselves.

These stats confuse me. I dont know if its been my bias all along. Guess I'll have to look out for it more esp w teams that are faster and rely on pick and pops/rolls.

Just another metric used to elevate certain players. Why is Jokic the only star not bound by his playoff success? Anybody else and these responses would be he’s a regular season player.

↑ There is also at least one downer in the group :nonono:

PER leaders this year according to realGM, its pretty useless stat, but its always fun to see at least to me :

1. Nikola Jokic 34.6
2. Kevin Durant 29.4
3. Jimmy Butler 29.0
4. Giannis Antetokounmpo 28.9
5. Montrezl Harrell 28.4
6. Stephen Curry 26.8
7. Anthony Davis 25.9
8. Rudy Gobert 25.2
9. Mike Muscala 24.9
10. Ja Morant 24.8

Ten worst PER's this season :

1. Theo Maledon -1.1
2. Austin Rivers -1.1
3. Taurean Prince 1.8
4. Terence Davis 2.1
5. Lamar Stevens 2.7
6. Kira Lewis, Jr. 2.9
7. Payton Pritchard 3.0
8. Gary Harris 3.1
9. Sterling Brown 3.7
10. Brad Wanamaker 3.8

Man, Gary Harris is washed up quick.

He's averaging 26/11/8 on 60 TS% for his career in the playoffs.

Yes Jokic the playoff disappointment with career numbers(not best season, but career) of 26/11/6 on 51/38/84 splits. Who has led the entire playoffs the past 2 seasons in BPM, OBPM, VORP, WS, and PER.

Give me a break with this Jokic can't play in the playoffs nonsense.

He’s 1A and 1B for MVP right now with Curry.

Look at the guys Jokic is playing with each night and they are top 3-4 team in the west. Monte Morris. Dozier. Austin Rivers. Jamychal Green. Barton and Gordon are nice players but not even close to all star talents. This team without Jokic would be a bottom 3 team but he raised the ceiling to a top-4 team. I don’t know the last time I can recall a guy doing so much with so little around him.

But yeah, Curry and Jokic are the front runners right now.

I think Jokic is worth a bet at +1300

Steph is too big a favorite (+275) to bet on when considering how extremely dominant Jokic's advanced stats are.

Joker is probably the most under-appreciated superstar the league has seen by a casual fan because he doesn't dunk or has flashy plays. It's about time people start realizing that he is a top 3 or 4 player in this league along with curry, durant and giannis. How people over rate Anthony Davis and under rate Jokic is insane. Davis who has been a pernnial loser all his career and has only been a winner as a second fiddle gets to be top 75 players and for some reason is considered the best big man by a casual fans whereas Jokis who should be in that list and is easily the best big man in the league is downplayed by fans everywhere.

And Jokic is less likely to miss time than Steph.

because he never lost in the first round, had amazing stats and arguably his team overperformed expectations every year?

Him
Barton +
Gordon neutral
Rookie “Bones” has been great

Thats literally the core right there. If it wasn’t for Durant being automatic he’s the downright MVP right now (still if you have Jokic as 1 right now can’t argue with that). They are 3rd in the West and if it stays that way he should be MVP again. This is one of the best carry jobs ever

And lol at Curry being MVP he’s had 5 so so games. That’s 38%. This is ain’t last year’s squad.

You are watching a 7”1 Dirk + Bird on offense and is anchoring the defense (2nd). Lost his 2nd/3rd in command btw.

Loved Dirk but Jokic is def peaking higher. Can’t see him doing this

I don't think people underappreciate him because of his lack of dunks. His highlight passes are as remarkable as the highlights of other star players.

The reason for skepticism about Jokic is that he isn't perceived as a very good defender; and history has shown that centers with suspect defense can typically be exploited in the playoffs. If nothing else, Jokic's lack of defensive mobility limits the defensive flexibility of the Nuggets.

That said, it's certainly possible for huge plodders to be effective defensively in the right system. We've seen it from Brook Lopez and Marc Gasol. Jokic hasn't shown the defensive aptitude of those guys so far in his career, but he is looking better this year. Maybe he changes the narrative.

22 Jokic is shaping up to be a top 5 peak season in the last 20 years (03 Duncan, 04 KG, 17 Curry, and whichever year you have for LeBron's peak).
