Now, I could understand a player who has played for the same team for a long, long time... if Tony Gwynn in his prime was offered a stake in the Padres, or if (by today's standards) a 28 yr old Pujols was offered the same stake in the Cardinals, then I get it...
But someone who's never even played for the team? This is beyond lunacy - beyond A-Rod's initial deal. Forget the baseball aspect for a while - what happens when the next big thing comes into town? When another young rookie sensation comes in, finishes arbitration... 1/4 of a million and a stake in the team as an asking price?
