The 1 Thing Holding Back Every Under-30 NBA Superstar

Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks: Efficiency

Image

Shocked to see anything other than defense here? That's fair. Among 250 qualified players, only Bryn Forbes scored worse than Trae Young in Defensive RAPTOR last season.

Still, the notion of something holding a player back implies—at least to me—that it can be fixed. While I'd stop short of labeling Young completely hopeless on defense—his ceiling at that end is tiny as a 6'1", 180-pounder without great strength or explosion—he is physically outmatched on a nearly nightly basis.

Where he could actually improve, though, is maximizing the efficiency of his offensive opportunities.

What does that mean? For starters, it means someone with the reputation of being a lethal long-range shooter should probably have better than a career 34.3 three-point percentage. It means an elite offensive weapon shouldn't be shooting 43.1 percent from the field.

He's a brilliant offensive player, but since his value is exclusively tied to that end, he needs to uncover even more brilliance. And that's before factoring in any production he might lose to the rule changes regarding foul calls.

He has the talent to unleash a 30-point, 10-assist season, but he needs a final coat of polish to get there.

Grading Every NBA Team's Top Player Through 2 Weeks

Atlanta Hawks: Trae Young

Grade: C-

Image

Trae Young juiced the Atlanta Hawks offense by 12.7 points per 100 possessions last season, doubling down on a 2019-20 campaign that established him as one of the exceedingly rare players whose mere presence on the floor assures his team of top-end scoring efficiency.

Though his three-point shot is falling at career-low rates, and though he's getting to the foul line less frequently than ever, his positive impact on Atlanta's scoring is even more pronounced. Unfortunately, his minutes have also coincided with an astronomical spike in points allowed per 100 possessions. Young posted negative on-court plus/minus figures in double-digit road losses to the Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers to close out last week.

The bar coming into this season was high for Young, already a bonafide All-Star and the best player on a conference finalist. He's been a bit of a disappointment by that standard, though his shot profile has some intriguing growth indicators.

Perhaps in response to opponents running him off the three-point line so aggressively (and to cover for his generally poor conversion rates at the rim), Young is taking more mid-rangers and is hitting them at career-best rates.

TY still seeking that balance. Maybe we need a facilitator at the 2-guard spot so Trae can hunt his own buckets?

Young Trae has the production but not the efficiency. He has to improve his decision-making when the game is on the line.

Trae Young quietly becoming mid-range maestro

Image

Trae Young has crested the 30-point mark in five straight outings and eight of his last 13. Over his last 13 games, Young is averaging 29 points and nine assists on 51/45/88 shooting splits. He's up to 41 percent from 3 for the season, per Cleaning The Glass, which by far would rank as a career high if sustained.

Move to the midrange, and the numbers gets even more impressive, and this is a true development in Young's game. Entering play on Wednesday, Young was cashing 55 percent of his almost five shots per game between 10 and 19 feet, per NBA.com. Counting Young's 33-point box score in the Hawks' win over Indiana on Wednesday, he's up to 56.8 percent on all his midrange shots, which registers as the second-best mark in the league -- just ahead of Kevin Durant and a three-percent uptick on Chris Paul -- among all players logging at least four such attempts per game, trailing only LaMarcus Aldridge.

Young's midrange prowess has, through the early stage of his career, been largely a product of his elite floater; he's never been a conventional 15-foot pull-up guy. But that's changing more this season.

Entering Wednesday, Young was taking a career-high 17 percent of his shots from the long midrange (between 14-plus feet and the 3-point line), per CTG, and making them at an elite 53 percent clip, (another career high by an appreciable margin) -- settling into the soft spot as ball defenders chase over the top of screens and bigs retreat to protect against his floater. You'll notice all those shots are off the dribble, where Young ranks in the 95th percentile, per Synergy. The league's fifth-leading scorer and third-leading assist man, Young's All-NBA level production has reached the realm of inevitability. Now if only the Hawks can find a consistent way to cover for him defensively. Clint Capela returning to his elite rim-protecting form is the easiest answer.
