Taran Armstrong - CBU

Post#1 » by clyde21 » Sun Nov 21, 2021 8:46 pm

might be glimmer of hope in a bad PG class, 6-5 aussie freshmen, has an absurd 54% AR / 22% UR, shooting almost 45% from 3, really really slick passer with a nice handle.

some early season highlights:

November 24th they play Texas, December 18th they play Arizona, probably the two most interesting games to try and catch him.

Had never heard of him before, but some very impressive passes in this very short thread. Based off of this very limited footage I'd be a little concerned about his handle, looked a bit shaky, but the passes were very very nice.

Texas gm was complete dud, that was disappointing, couldn't really do anything with the ball

Yeah Taran's great. Been watching him the last few years here. Comes from the CoE/Global Academy system, played behind Giddey, as you can tell, they teach guys to process the game and pass at a high level. I'm not ready to consider him a draft board guy quite yet, the conference is quite weak, but he's definitely a potentially draft able guy.

Was AUS's best PG at U19s.

There’s plenty of game tape on Taran in this article:

Just getting around to checking this guy out and I'm very intrigued. He has to be the best passer in the draft, no?

Going back and re-watching USA vs Australia at U19 to see what Armstrong did.

Interesting that Australia pretty much has Daniels at PG the whole time and Armstrong at the 2. Watching Armstrong in college and Daniels for G-league ignite it seems like Armstrong is the more natural PG and Daniels is better suited for the 2.,

My favorite play from Armstrong in this game is here at 6:26. Just a savage play the way he doesn't shy away from the contact, he goes to the contact and scores on Johnny Davis. You can tell from Davis' reaction he thought it should have been a foul on Armstrong - Davis may have even thought it was a dirty play, with how Armstrong went right at him as he went up for the shot - then you see the savage/badass look on Armstrong's face as he high fives his teammate after making the shot. It's like Armstrong got a jolt from how he seemingly got under Davis' skin there.

This kid has some swagger, an edge to him which I like.

2 Aussies could go in the 1st round this draft.

Interesting prospect, game probably opens up for him more at the next level as well. I think he just needs to put in the work in the gym and there could be an uptick athletically for him and work on that jumper.

I like Taran a lot, and you know I'll pump the Aussies if I think they're worth it. I think he's proven himself to be a draft prospect at this point, but certain draft pundits are going over the top with the hype, I think.

He's a really strong passer, and he has good size at the PG position.

Shot is not bad, but needs work for him to have an impact at higher levels. He shot the ball well in NBL1 (2nd div Aus league) before he came over, I made this tweet at the time.

I just feel like his games against legit teams so far (Texas, now Arizona) have been so-so, and overall the strength of competition hasn't been accounted for enough. A lot of decent but not elite Aussies go over there and play a ton. Speaking of which, they have another recruit from his class, Keanu Rasmussen, who is a really fun scorer.. I think he might be red-shirted right now, but once he plays, look out for him to do stuff for CBU as well, I like him a lot.

Yeah it's definitely concerning that he hasn't played so great against the 2 legit teams he's faced. If he had stronger performances in those 2 games I think he has a better case as a 1st round pick. I still think he has a shot to go in the 2nd round, though - long way to go before the draft..

i wouldn't say he was bad vs Texas and Arizona. He made some really good plays in both games (the sick dunk after strong baseline drive vs Texas, and punishing Arizona for going down on a screen). But overall, he wasn't great in either game.

he should easily go in the 2nd round, his size + passing is elite and his shooting is passable, disappointing he didn't have better games against those teams but Cal Baptist in general was just overwhelmed in those games from a talent perspective.

i think 15-20 range is fine for him in this class. probably nothing higher tho.
