Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
I'm an RJ guy. I think he really wants to be the best player he can be, and I think he wants to get there cutting no corners.
There are ways to get there, you can be a 3rd-4th option surrounded by better players taking on bigger responsibilities and pressure, and you can grow as a player in the background e.g. Cam Reddish on Hawks, Jordan Poole on Warriors.
Or you can immediately be the man coming in as a lottery pick, taking on big pressure and responsibilities, e.g. Luka on Mavs.
I think RJ would thrive as the 4th guy and grow quietly in background without being expected to deliver now. As long as team is winning and he's not blamed for team's losing, he'll grow quickly, but it's not like that on Knicks.

Re: Is RJ Barrett a bust?
RJ is a team oriented player. Put him into the right roster and he will probably be a stat stuffer and some kind of glue guy.
He is not clicking with this first unit. He’s young and should be playing with other guys who want to push the ball upcourt.
Even with greater consistency I’m not expecting him to be a # 1 alpha player, but a good NBA player for a long time. He’s not going to get a giant contract so he might be affordable after his rookie contract. That means he could possibly stay or be a good trade chip since no team is going to take him if we extend him first to a crazy deal.
He does not fit with Randle so I’m all for brining him in with the second unit.

i never liked this thread tittle. because busts are guys who can't play in the nba. rj can play in the nba. this is not the real discussion. the question should have been is rj a future all-star. and the answer is no. it seems, and has always seemed, pretty obvious too that he wouldn't be.

nah
anybody can theoretically play in the nba. even frank. but most people other than mpharris and wingo realize he is clearly a bust
saw an article from 2020 that 17 of the last 30 players picked 3rd have been named as All-Star for the 3rd pick and that's not counting Jaylen Brown who became an all star in 2021 or Lamelo or Mobley who will both be all stars and are much better than RJ
he's approaching otto porter jr territory

He is not a bust. He is not a star player. He is someone you would pay more than mid level but less than max. I would say around 13-18 million per depending on the rest of the roster

Right.
And I think the more interesting question is does RJ even have a role on a championship contender?
I think he's a 7th or 8th man at best on a championship team. A wing who comes off the bench and doesn't kill you on defense. Not even a good bench player, just a fill-in.
He's too inefficient and unreliable to be a starter on a legitimately good team. He was well below average in scoring efficiency in a limited role last year, and we're seeing that - while not a liability - he's no difference-maker on defense.
All of this needs to be seriously considered as we're getting closer to contract extension time.
I think the Knicks would be very wise to trade him while he still has value (maybe after a good stretch of games).

sure he does, adam morrison was the 3rd pick and he had a role on two championship teams. RJ is playing a lot like rookie adam morrison on the bobcats right now. Very similar numbers. Rookie Ammo shot 38% and 33% from 3 and 71% from the line. RJ is shooting 38% and 30% from 3 and 72% from the line. Rookie Ammo had a -2.7 OBPM and a -2.4 DBPM for a -5.1 BPM. RJ has a -2.6 OBPM and a -2.4 DBPM for a -5.0 BPM.

The posters are already printed declaring him the alpha young stud, blah blah, MSG propaganda. Even if our FO had a clue and was staffed by real basketball people instead of an ex-agent with liver sclerosis who wants RJ?
It would need to be a rebuilding team with other young players, who saw some potential in him that our garbage player development failed to realize. Then ... our FO would need to be smart and take future picks for him. But they'd be looking for the next Shareef Abdul-Rahim or some veteran over paid bum to "get us over the top", not realizing we're not even at the mountain yet.
I'd take any pick likely to be top 10 in the next 2-3 years for him. Or a positional swap for a similar age player, like let's say RJ for PJ Washington, Kevin Huerter and a future pick (that would be pretty generous, but we're assuming the other GM is an idiot here).

All this. Which, in the context of pick number 3 or not trading back for more draft depth, makes RJ a B-U-S-T

I just need to put into perspective exactly how bad this guy is
He's literally the worst player on the entire team. The numbers don't lie. if you look at win shares/48, bpm, vorp, true shooting%, PER, whatever you want to use, he is dead last out of rotation players, and his Ortg of 96 is also last on the team. He is killing this team and Thibs should bench him sooner rather than later. He never earned this. He sucked as a rookie and didn't make an all-rookie team. He was ok in year 2 because he stood in a corner and never shot unless it was set, wide open, and uncontested spoon fed to him by Randle out of double teams. He just blows. He is getting minutes because they drafted him 3rd. Had he been taken 8th or 9th like Frank, Knox, Toppin, etc his ass would already be glued to the bench where it belongs. But it's not because of politics. I'm tired of it.
