They don’t know the “trick” to being a pro.

Billy Beane talked about this in moneyball. Some of the most talented players he encountered, including himself, just couldn’t put it all together. When other less talented players just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and had a sense of complete self belief that guided their games.

Ibaka.

This dude can dunk from the FT line! He should have been a freak rebounder. Career best of just 8.8rpg and just 3 times above 8rpg. His best per36 rpg is also low at just 11rpg.

Not a current player but I recall back in the day, when Doug Collins was an announcer just a few years after he coached the Pistons, that he once said on air that Allan Houston actually had a higher vertical leap than Grant Hill. It's not something people would've guessed.

But the above the rim game was never really a part of Houston's game.

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

A lot also because they simply lacked basketball skills i.e. long athletic guys who couldn't shoot or post-up

this. Gerald Green too. And for all the success that Vince Carter had he should have been much better. He should have been at least Kobe's equal and MJ 2.0. He just lacked the killer instinct and desire to be a better all-around player on both ends. Bill Russell. The guy wasn't a very good basketball player despite being extremely blessed physically. He clearly didn't work on much of his game. But he got to camp underneath the basket where he could block shots and pull down rebounds against insurance salesman so he's apparently elite. Shaq let himself get fat and didn't work on his game either. He obviously used his gifts, especially when he was younger but he wasted a whole lot of talent. He should have retired as the 2nd best ever but it's hard to even have him in the top 10.

JJ Redick.
Higher vertical jump than Andre Iguodala on pre-draft measurement

",,,can't use their athleticism the way you think"

you're going to have to explain this, and an example would help. the nba chooses to promote itself on athleticism. it covets athleticism and prioritizes it. so what do you mean "can't use"

I think of players who need an extra beat to make a decision. Guys like Barnes and Wiggins.
