The Mets’ quest for pitching

The Mets want to add starting pitching, but how exactly are they going to do it?

Price seems to be no object for owner Steve Cohen, but the team’s luxury-tax payroll already is approaching $230 million. That number would rise to $270 million if the Mets added free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer at about $40 million per season, and for that to happen Scherzer would need to abandon the preference he showed for West Coast teams at the trade deadline. The luxury-tax threshold in a new CBA is likely to increase, but not to $270 million. And even at that number, the Mets likely would need another starter plus two more relievers.

Scherzer, then, appears a long shot. Robbie Ray would cost the Mets the 14th pick in the draft, a selection they want to keep. Marcus Stroman tweeted Saturday that he is “not preferred by the front office,” saying they “rather (would have) Gausman and Ray,” only to apparently delete the tweet later.

Gausman, Jon Gray and Carlos Rodón, none of whom is tied to a draft pick, would appear more likely targets for the Mets. But the Mariners, Blue Jays and other clubs are on Gausman, and Gray is drawing significant interest as well. The Mets also are exploring trades for starters, but beyond the Athletics’ Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea and Chris Bassitt, that market, too, is relatively thin.

How do we feel about this signing, 2 years - 11 mill, he got lit up with the Astros, and was always nail bitting when he was in the playoffs.

Also Marcus Simeon has signed with the rangers 7 years - 175 mill.
