Two Super Max extensions at the end of the season?

Post#1 » by wco81 » Sun Nov 28, 2021 3:30 am

Harden has a $47.4 player option after this season that he could opt out of to sign a Super Max.

Kyrie Irving has a $37.9 million player option after the season.

They've both been All-NBA in at least two of the last 3 seasons so they should both be eligible.

Do the Nets give them both Super Max 5-year deals after this season, regardless of how well the Nets do?

Harden's deal seems more of a sure thing. Team gave up so many assets for him that they can't let him walk, even if he doesn't regain his MVP-level of play.

Kyrie, if he doesn't play at all this season, it would be strange to commit like $200 million plus to him. But he's a great talent and with the huge money committed to KD and presumably Harden, how can they not pay him in hopes that he comes around and is willing to commit to the team and his teammates?

He's a perennial all-NBA talent so no choice but to offer him the Super Max, even if he doesn't play this season?

OTOH, if the team falls short of its goals, can they trust him not to bail on the team again for whatever reason?

It's only been 20 games but the Nets are still at the top of the EC, with a +4.1 net average, 109 to about 105 points a game. Last year, they were +4.5 but they scored 119 PPG. So they may be missing his scoring punch.

This would be Kyrie's 3rd season on the Nets and the franchise may have gone too far down the path with KD and Kyrie to change their strategy. Of course they doubled down by trading for Harden.

So it'll cost the owners a lot more money to win championships with the Big Two and now the Big Three. But he's very rich so fans won't object.

I don't think the Nets offer Irving a supermax extension.

A team can only have two players with supermax extensions on their roster at any given time.

For Irving to receive a supermax extension in the 2022 offseason, he would have to win NBA MVP in 2021-22 or be named to an All-NBA Team in 2021-22, or win DPOY in 2021-22.

Neither Harden or Irving can sign supermax extensions. You can sign supermax only with the team that drafted You. I don't think Nets will extend Kyrie, he will opt in for sure for 2022-23 season.

Harden should be eligible for a super max extension. Players are required to be extended by the team that drafted them unless they are traded in their first four years of a rookie contract. Harden was traded to Houston after 3 seasons.

Will Kyrie play? Why would Tsai extend someone who won’t offer their services? Getting paid requires you to work or offer a service.

because 1% chance kyrie plays is more valuable then 90% of the league 99% playing.

whether its an extension or opt out + resign is semantics

whether its super max or the most the nets are allowed to pay.

but will have it offered and the ents will be thrilled for them to sign it

Nets rescinded their 186 million dollar offer from Kyrie already. That has to do with him not offering his services to the team; do you really think they will offer the guy five years over 200 million if they already rescinded an offer for him? If they do offer him a super max, it should be under the circumstances that he puts in writing he will be available all 82 games plus the playoffs unless injury or something serious comes up in his life. I would be glad to offer it then. It’s like we feel he wants the media to create more hype out of this that the Nets need him, and duh, we do need him. Getting him back covers and masks the blemish of Harden’s struggles and Harden can focus on being a strict facilitator. With the Suns, Warriors and Bucks climbing, it will be difficult if not near impossible for the Nets to win as is. They need Kyrie to win it all, plain and simple. They can’t go to March with this roster expecting to win it all, either Irving comes back or they find a player(s) who will help us get to the ship.

They will offer him the max. trading him for peanut role players or going back to the days where we hoped we could sign the kent bazemores and otto porters of the world is not a better situation then hoping Kyrie comes back.

1 game of Kyrie > 82 of the kent bazemores of the world

You don't pay someone almost 200 million dollars to play when he feels like it. Best thing for the nets would be to trade this headcase because he clearly dgaf about basketball or his teammates. Harden will get his extension but even he's looking a bit off and he needs to take his offseason fitness seriously going forward. He's only getting older and playing your way into shape is gonna take longer and longer.

Kyrie is an elite teammate. few care about their teammates as much as he does. its why every teammate he ever had loves him... even the ones in boston despite media nonsense he was some cancer there. Kyrie is a great dude. he cares about basketball. sometimes multiple things you care about are in conflict with one another. he isnt "not playing basketball when he doesnt feel like it". He didnt create the pandemic or the mandate. he would be playing road games if the nets allowed it or all games if the state allowed it.

Harden is taking things seriusly. it is hard to get in NBA game shape when you are extremely limited due to rehab.

complete nonsense all over this thread

Raja Bell did not love ----- as a teammate, he had said as much on his podcast. He respected him as an athlete to the highest degree, but did not love his tendency to go rogue, even in his Cleveland days. I think you've overcooked your argument, friend.

He is widely respected by former and current teammates, for his passion and generosity. However, the lack of sound bytes from this team and former teams is not an indication of fondness for him. GM's and coaches normally keep a lid on messy talk. If Millsap, Harden and a couple others spoke freely, I know they would have harsh criticism for HWSNBN.

there is no lack of soundbytes. former and current teams have consistently praised and supported him.

I know second hand, form scalabrine, that several current celtics players reach out to, and support kyrie with his stance on the mandate. Alot of these guys feel the same way, would love to sit out or still be unvaccinated, but financially could not or are not willing to take the hit. Alot of players feel Kyrie takes the bullets they cant, and they appreciate that. its why he got voted VP. players know he will act on what he believes, regardless of personal consequence or media spin/vitrol.

As far as I'm concerned, we only have one super max extension to worry about, that is Harden.
