Re: 2021-22 Offseason Thread
The Rangers were a 60-win team last year. Their farm system is pretty poor. Clearly, the solution is a handful of free agent mega-deals.

Holy Texas. I feel like in 2-3 years if not next year, there will be alot of regret with the money they've spent.
Also, I'm all for Biggio at 2nd base.

For the right team, sure. Seager's a young FA, and he has averaged 5.7 fWAR per 650 PAs in his career, which is elite. He has had some injury problems but nothing debilitating.
For the Rangers, nope! The hilarious thing is that they better than most teams should understand that a couple of great players do not a contender make, given that they've shared a division with the Angels during the Trout/Ohtani era. Angels players have won 4 of the past 8 AL MVP awards, and it really ought to be higher if not for voters' reluctance to give out the award to the same player every year (sorry, Josh Donaldson, but Mike Trout should have won the MVP in 2015, as well). They have one playoff appearance and zero playoff games won in that span; that's the only season where they even exceeded a .500 record.
Unless they do exceedingly well in smaller deals, the Rangers are still going to be a very uncompetitive team, and they're going to be burning the best years of both of those deals while hanging around .500. They certainly could see internal growth (they have a number of young pitchers, but they were all pretty awful last year), but as things stand the Rangers' team consists of:
- two very good middle infielders in Semien/Seager;
- a solid defense-first middle infielder in Isiah Kiner-Falefa (who only really has value if played at shortstop, which he presumably won't be anymore);
- an interesting if K-happy CF in Adolis Garcia;
- a 1B who could be good if he finds more power (but is fairly average to date) in Nate Lowe;
- a very average SP in Jon Gray who could be better away from the Rockies;
- a whole lot of dreck.
That...that really isn't anything.

**** your asterisk.

I'm absolutely okay with Biggio at 2nd and Espinal at 3rd.
Would I take upgrades? I mean, sure, but not if it means having trouble signing our young starts long-term.

Also, the Rangers have burned their 2nd and 3rd rounders in the process, which would have been close to the top of those rounds (and come with about $2.8m in pool money), along with $1m in IFA bonus money. So, a team that already has a thin farm system will, despite having the 3rd overall pick, have far fewer opportunities to improve that farm system, as well.

**** your asterisk.

So, I hope they had talked with Semien about playing 2B long term?

Depends. If expanding the playoffs means more short series, I want no part of it. The playoffs are already such a crapshoot.

Really interesting that the top wild-card team isn't pickable by the division winners. I suppose they wanted to have certainty about who would be hosting games as soon as possible, maybe?

I completely agree. Series should be best of 7, at the expense of a shorter season.

Re: 2021-22 Offseason Thread
I think you want a system where it's almost impossible for a really good team - defined say as a 90+ win team - to miss the playoffs. In most seasons the existing wildcard system does a pretty good job of that. Maybe adding a 6th team would do the trick. Not sure how to juggle the playoff series structure, though. I personally don't want to shorten the regular season, but at the same time don't want to lengthen the playoffs. Also I would want to maintain the incentive for winning the division. Maybe you have two play-in games instead of one - with the worst division winner and three wildcards going at it. Though I'm not that fond of one-game sudden death matchups.
I don't want the playoffs expanded any further than that, though. Mediocre teams shouldn't make it. If you're expanding it to 14 teams, than inevitably some middling/mediocre teams will make.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."
