It's not that it's cocky; it's the fact that these just aren't smart plays. The look back at Adams almost cost Scottie an easy bucket a quarter before and that play also seemed to be a turning point. We were in the midst of a big run as we cut a 13-point deficit into a one-possession game (and that bucket ended up making it 56-55). The crowd was already pretty amped, but imagine if Scottie just went up and dunked that ball with force on the break rather than fumbling it at the last second and just laying it up quickly before Adams got back? Memphis surely would have been forced to call a timeout. Instead, they ended up winning a jump ball then draining a three on the next possession which was the start of a little 9-4 run for them and we couldn't get closer than 5 points after that. The failed dunk attempt isn't quite as bad as it looked because JJJ probably would have blocked Scottie regardless, but that's not a play you try to make when your team has been trailing and struggling to score all night. Maybe if you're winning and looking for the knock-out punch, but not in a 5-point-game with 10 minutes left.
Scottie is just a young player who has a flair for the dramatics. It usually works out (like the no-look passes), but he has made a lot of silly mistakes lately (like inbounding the ball backwards against the Celtics and the stare-down attempt against JJJ) that can easily be corrected and/or controlled a bit better. Active and emotional Scottie that makes winning plays and gets the team/crowd amped up is a very fun player to watch and root for. Risky and demonstrative Scottie that "pokes the bear" isn't a winning player.

It's quite impressive TBH. He's such a fascinating player to watch and develop.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
I liked how he was taking 1 or 2 threes to start the season, but then he just stopped shooting after he returned from injury (4 attempts in 8 games). I think it just clicked in the Warriors game that he needs to start taking those open threes above the break. He's averaging 2 3FGM at 48% in the last 5 games.HangTime wrote:3 point shooting,

Obviously it's a super small sample size and he has some really ugly misses (like 2 airballs against the Celtics and hitting nothing but backboard against Memphis), but his shooting stroke looks years beyond what I expected. I fully expected Scottie to finish this year with 30-40 made threes on ~30% (at best) and most of those attempts coming in the second half of the year. He needs to keep jacking up 3-4 threes most games. That shot will continue to be available for him either through DHOs or PnPs where he can catch the defence off guard a bit until the defence starts to play up on him a bit more...in which case that opens up more possibilities for Scottie to create for himself or teammates.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
The dunk attempt didn't look like a stare down but rather a pass look off to get the defender to shift. But I hate the stupid look back, soft lay-in crap he does. Someone will put him in his place over that. A forceful dunk would have got the crowd/bench going.

Let Scottie be Scottie. When lebron does his stuff no one complains. Scottie got swag. He is the only reason most of us are watching this team right now. Maybe some folks like the pounding the rock players that take everyone from the flow of the game. Not me.

The only reason I'm even remotely "hating on" the staredown dunks is that it doesn't do anything but annoy the competition vs throwing down something powerful to get the crowd and teammates pumped up.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
On the season, his shooting splits are now 49/35/73. His TS% is hovering around league average.
There are a lot of great signs:
1. His willingness to take shots that he might not be comfortable taking. He's not afraid to fail. He misses badly on some 3s, but he keeps shooting them.
2. His shots come within the flow of the offense. He never chucks.
3. He's adding new shots/moves to his game consistently.
4. He's so much further ahead offensively than many expected and he could be an elite player a lot sooner than anticipated.

After their first 20 games only VC and MMouse scored more points as a rookie for the Raps. Both won ROTY.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
the real story for me here is that for a guy who seemingly couldn't shoot coming out of college...he's now nailing 3 pointers at a crazy clip before his 25th game. We'll see how the next handful of games goes, but if he's taking 5 or 6 3PTs a game and hitting 35-40% of them already, the sky is the limit for this kid.
Just don't look back before you launch those 3's

Especially impressive because he has at least 3 guys who are supposed to be established as ahead of him in the pecking order (Pascal, Fred and OG...maybe even Trent). Mighty Mouse especially and VC had very little competition in their way. This is also a kid people said wasn't a scorer....now leads all rookies, funny how that goes.

Seriously this a huge development that isnt being talked about enough. I now see superstar potential with the way his jumpshot has been coming along. It was his biggest weakness it seemed coming into the NBA and its been a huge surprise. I really think the small sample size in college led people to believe he was a bad shooter when in fact he was always an average shooter and after tweaking his shot, its improved even more.
Now people who are complaining about Barnes looking back on the fast break, i get it. Its annoying, i would prefer he look to throw it down like he did on the dunk attempt but at the same time i dont see it as a big deal. Coaches will have a talk with him and this will be a non story in the future. I also kind of interpret the looking back, as someone who doesnt want to get blocked from behind. This really is a non-issue in my opinion

Interesting pattern with the points, with VC being 4 off of Damon and Barnes being 4 off of Vince. Vince > Damon so does that mean Barnes > Vince?

Glad to see Barnes being humbled at times. Don't want things to come too easily. Needs to maintain a healthy work ethic and understand his current best isn't going to cut it.
Hopefully he can get more explosive to finish more of those plays at the rim.

Re: Official Scottie Barnes Thread
Do you see any chance for Scottie to win Rookie of the Month for Nov? Mobley is the obvious choice and maybe Wagner is also in the mix.
Scottie leads all rookies in PPG, RPG, 2nd in BPG, 3rd in SPG, 5th in APG, 2nd in FTM.

I guess you can ensure near 100% finishing at the rim and avoid collisions that could lead to horrible leg injuries. I think he plays like a more athletic Al Horford.

Apart from skillset development, that Mamba mentality could be the thing which lifts Scottie into top-5 territory. Those players don't always just let the game come to them, they go out and take it.
