Eh, anyone would make the same decision. This isn't being chicken. This is owning West Coast recruiting, trading Norman for Los Angeles, and heading up a college football program every bit as big and important as Oklahoma.

IDK. 1. He is getting paid a **** ton of money. 2. USC is pretty prestigious 3. All coaches put themselves in a position to succeed when they have leverage. Think Bud would come to MKE without Giannis?

Ok, but...really. If I'm Lincoln Riley (which I'm not - he's from Texas), this is why I'm going to Cali instead of literally anywhere in the South, or staying in Norman and travelling more across the South in the SEC. The entire experience down there is completely miserable  Not to mention the completely wild football expectations they have since there's nothing better to do.

Just looked at the '22 recruiting rankings. Jimbo and A&M must really be doing some quality NIL work. They've currently got (or projected to get):

#2
#5
#6
#7
#14
#21
#22
#34
#47
#50
#52
#62
#84

And that's only good for the #3 ranked class behind Georgia and Bama LMAO.

Interesting paragraphs in the Athletic. Mel Tucker basically broke college football.

By that point, LSU had already made overtures to Kelly, multiple people with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic, but Kelly had said that he was not interested. Still, in the time between the Tigers’ initial flirtations several weeks ago and the time that Kelly accepted the job, Kelly had requested a meeting with Swarbrick and Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins that ended up never happening. During that same stretch, Michigan State signed second-year coach Mel Tucker — amid the first winning season of his head-coaching career — to a 10-year, $95 million deal that reset the negotiating bar for seemingly every coach and agent in the business.

Kelly’s Notre Dame deal, signed in 2020, ran through the 2024 season.

In the two days since Kelly left Notre Dame, multiple people close to Kelly have wondered aloud why Notre Dame didn’t recognize the current market and, with so many big jobs open around the country, take a more proactive approach to meeting Kelly’s needs and eliminating any doubt that the winningest active FBS coach was truly valued at one of the sport’s iconic programs.

My bff went to ND, and he and his family (all ND grads) are reasonably connected to their athletics program and activities around it. He doesn't have any insider info or sources for this, but his read seems to be that many at ND have been ready to move on from Kelly for a while now, so this is a pretty clean break and good timing. There wasn't a lot of trust that he could ever get them over the hump and, right or wrong (it's wrong), they think they're the best program in the country.

It's also pretty apparent that everyone is well aware how much of an **** he is. So there's that.

A certified capital-S Scumbag like Brian Kelly jumping ship to another Power-5 school and getting paid millions of dollars is why it's really hard for me to get too invested in college football, outside of the Badgers of course.

**** that guy.

My Saturdays for years have been booked. I don't watch any NFL outside of the Packers, but I plan my Saturdays thinking I'll be watching games from 11:00 am to midnight.

I don't necessarily care about most non-UW games, but if its a good matchup or nothing else is going on on a saturday, I'll watch quite a bit. A much better product than college bball.

It feels like the Badgers won't be rushing to recruit a transfer over Mertz, but just because I'm familiar with Martinez, I'd be a fan. He's better than Mertz in every way.

As for college football fandom, it is much harder for me to do this with a family now, but if I am home or in some vicinity of a TV, I am less "into" the college games, but I love having them on all Saturday. Throw Alabama-Florida on at 3:30 on CBS or whatever and it feels a great fall day just having the crowd in the background and occasionally following what's going on.

NFL I'll put on RedZone or any standalone game and actually get into it. Obviously the Packers are appointment viewing. I try to watch every Badgers game but can't for said reasons above.

Yeah same, after having kids I had to cut down my sports watching. College sports took the biggest ax. I'll also throw on a good college football game and enjoy it. College hoops is another story, after basically just watching NBA for years college basketball seems SO inferior it's hard to watch.

I'll admit to limited knowledge of Martinez... My half-baked understanding is a highly skilled QB who also has a knack for throwing untimely Interceptions. How true/false is that notion?

(I'm part of the group that barely follows college ball, unless it involves the Badgers and any connections to the NFL draft.....)
