Is Evan Mobley the most valuable asset in the league?

Post#1 » by NRSV » Thu Dec 2, 2021 6:35 pm

Consider the following:

- Analytically profiling as a top 5 defender. As a rookie.
- likely under team control another 8 seasons if he accepts super max extension. He’s “cheap” another 3.5 seasons.
- averaging 14.5ppg on 49/34/78 shooting splits.
- averaging 2 blks/1 stl per game. 8 RPG.
- leading league in shot contests per appearance.
- showing a strong face up game and range out to 3PT land. Next year he likely breaks out as a 20 PPG scorer. Profiles as a better jump shooter than Giannis.

Contenders: Jokic, Curry, Giannis, KD, Luka, and?

Arguments against: all are much more expensive already or about to be. Curry and KD are older. Luka isn’t in the same universe defensively.

good post, but the contenders you mentioned are all so special. None of them are locked down for 8 years, but I'll take the sure superstar for 2 or 3 years over the up-and-comer for 8. There's no substitute, for instance, for Giannis's value over replacement. Mobley's isn't in the same ballpark.

lol no. I love Evan Mobley but you can't rank a rookie ahead of guys like Giannis, Luka, Steph, Jokic, etc. If the goal is to win a title, you go with the sure fire MVP candidates regardless of age/contract.

We’re talking about assets. Projecting value over the course of years relative to cost. Not a basic who is better today.

Νope.
All of Giannis, Doncic, Jokic are 26 and under. The guys that will lead any survey for building around them within the next years. Any team would gladly pay the supermax for them.
Guys like Morant, Edwards, Ball are next.
We'll know about Mobley next season. For now, he's not the most valuable asset (far from it) but he can be in the future.

Don't mind me. Just over here wishing the rookie talk would go in the rookie thread.

Love me some Evan Mobley and what he's been able to do as a rookie but lol, no. Put Giannis or Luka on the market right now (both locked up for 4-5 more years) and teams would give up every prospect and draft pick they own for the next 7-8 years if the Stepien rule didn't prevent them from doing so.

They would do the same for Mobley.

LaMelo is 5th in the league in WAR at age 20 (younger than Mobley) behind Giannis, curry, Jokic, and John Collins. The only argument for Mobley over him is that people hate his family

Mobility’s defensive impact and size gives him a distinct advantage over LaMelo when projecting them over the course of the next decade.

He's played 18 games. Come on now.

OP asked for people’s opinion and now he’s in the comments telling everyone that they’re wrong. Fun discussion.

I wonder who’s the one person who voted “yes”…

Not any GM that wants to build a team better than the worst version of the KG era T-Wolves, that's for sure. And even that's being generous assuming he actually is the next KG.

Imagine thinking Mobley has more value than Giannis.

if somebody hit a home run in each of their first 18 MLB games, how many more games do you need to see before you know what you have?

Top five defensive player as a rookie, he’s going to shoot nearly 40% from three, and score at least 20 PPG in the next 16 months. Other than Giannis, Who is very expensive, Who can do that?

I mean, I could name the other 2 dozen areas of the game where he is much better. Including size for position. Defensive is factored into WAR
