Delon Wright

Post#1 » by benhillboy » Sat Dec 4, 2021 4:13 pm

Calling on Toronto, Memphis, Sacramento, and Dallas fans. How many of you loved Delon Wright’s game like this Hawks fan?

Looking at his advanced numbers and some highlight film after he signed here I knew I would like dude. Despite his dreadful shooting he hasn’t disappointed with the third highest net rating on the team behind Clint Capela and John Collins (both killing everything on sight at +22, Wright at +7).

Dude is 5th in assist to turnover ratio in front of names like CP3, TJ McConnell, and DeJonte Murray. 6th in defensive plays per foul, in front of dudes like Jimmy Butler and Matisse Thybulle.

I love the cadence to his game. When necessary he gets off the ball early and aggressively. Many “star” players don’t understand that. Moves off it subtly. Sets up angles with different passing styles, quirky timing, and smart resets. Defensively he’s like a poker player. He likes to lull you to sleep then strike. Great awareness of scouting. Has the invaluable asset of a traffic rebounding guard.

Nate McMillan is being a real casual playing him only 14 minutes a game and not a single second beside Trae Young, who needs all the traditional PG help he can get. Coach is allowing his scoring limitations to mask everything else he does on the foot that is above average. So many players in this league get to play 30 minutes just because they can score well yet do everything else poorly smh.

Former fans just chime in and give some love to an extremely high IQ, no maintenance role player.

I always wondered why he didn't get more PT... Seemed very fluid, generally made good decisions, didn't feel like a huge liability on either end.

I first started paying attention to him as i thought he looked like a copy of Samira Wiley, but i really liked his game. I'm quite surprised he always seems to find a way to play himself out of rotation

Not me.

Oh there are things to like. I really like his really odd cadence on drives. It's like he's a musician operating on the down beat. It confuses defenses. He gives effort defensively though he's not the defender his reputation suggested. He seems to care about playing well.

But there is more not to like. He has zero self-confidence. Like none. If he makes a bad play, he's useless for like 4 or 5 more possessions. I've never seen a player whose percentages say he's a decent shooter pass on more open shots just wrecking the offense because that was the shot generated and when he doesn't take it the team had to scramble.

Generally when you are on 5 teams in less than 3 years there is a reason for that and Delon is no different. Seems like a good dude so I hope he really is finding a home in Atlanta and plays well. But I think by the season's end you will find yourself mostly frustrated by the guy.

he played an important part in toronto's bench mob. long defender. capable ball handler. not a great scorer. doesnt shoot the 3 very well or consistently.. but he also dont have the minutes to prove he can do more. so he has always been generally under utilized especially being a 1st round pick at 20. in toronto he was behind lowry, derozan, powell, and FVV at the guard position. thought he would get more play after he was traded but i guess it didnt happen

Well taken. I haven’t seen him pass up any shots he should take. He just bricks em lol. Luckily we have 2 excellent offensive rebounders. I’d rather he drive to draw and dish on an open three opportunity than actually take it his form is that poor.

Back in the day, there was legit argument on whether FVV or Delon is the right one to keep. Obviously the management decided on FVV and the rest is history. Needless to say one's career faired much better than the other.

Always liked his game as a backup. Does a lot of things well as long as he's surrounded with shooters/scorers. Wish he wasn't so reluctant to shoot because he isn't that bad, just has very little confidence

I thought he played good minutes with young last night,
He was forced in there due to TLC not holding it down
Where the offseason has more buzz happens.

Delon is mentally weak.

His size and raw skills should make him a Shaun Livingston like starting PG-SG. Instead, he is a streaky and deferential player who is much better suited as a backup.

Ironically, I think he would be great next to Trae, given his size and tendency to pass, complements Trae. I don’t watch enough ATL to know why they haven’t played more together. Probably because his weak minded ness is not contender worthy.

Like I keep saying, Hawks are stacked. When Delon is coming off your bench as the 11th man or whatever you know you have a ridiculously good roster. He's a pro.

I am good with Delon. He has started coming around. With all the injuries its great timing. His contract expires after this season and we will see if Schlenk brings him back. I have no complaints if he does.

Pistons had both him, and Corey Joseph. They kept Cojo.

Horrific decision that still haunts them. Everytime he plays, I change to a different game.

Never liked his game, he’s really passive. He has impactful moments occasionally but overall you barely notice that he’s on the court.

was pretty much going to say exactly this, i really wish we had wright over cojo.

there are definitely better offensive spark plug-types you can have coming off the bench but in terms of a nice offensive/defensive mix i'm not sure there are many better backup PGs in the league. plus he provides PG/SG versatility.

I wish we had him back in Toronto. He wanted out during our championship season to play for a bigger role/contract and never got it. The CBA forces so many teams to just play their bad draft picks, it's hard to sometimes convince myself that these are truly the best players in the world. Delon is just a solid player and should be getting more minutes with the Hawks.

Probably would get ethered by other Raptors Fans, but I loved him more than Van Vleet. Delon had much better passing, playmaking, and court vision, which is what I personally look for in a PG. But Van Vleet synergized with Lowry more, so Delon had to go. Him and Nando De Colo were 2 Raptors who I thought were overlooked by fans, but I was sold on them.

Pistons GM Weaver had Bruce Brown, Delon Wright and Derrick Rose on the Pistons. He traded them away for very little and picked....

Corey Joseph as his guy to be the backup PG. Then gave him a very friendly contract. :banghead:

I am not hopeful for the upcoming offseason when the Pistons have max cap space.

He was never going to work under Rick Carlisle. Too tall to play SG for Rick, Rick likes undersized score first SGs. See JJ Barea, Monta Ellis, Jason Terry, and if we're being honest Jalen Brunson pretty much qualifies as this too

I liked him the end of last year. I wanted Sac to keep him instead of dealing him for Thompson.

Even though we already are stocked up on guards, I was committed to seeing them play small and fast. Team had other plans.

He's making $8 million plus and is a UFA after the season.

Most playoff teams have high payrolls.

Is he going to get a comparable contract after this season?
