just from the eye test RJ is no doubt one of the best young wing defenders in the league, he is just so big, quick and strong for a 3. On offense his game has opened up recently with the help of his teammates shooting the crap out of the ball, the knicks are on an absolute tear to start the season offensively. Randle isn't even playing well.

I wouldn't even compare him to jimmy because they have much different games. Butler is more skilled with the ball in his hands while rj thrives in transition and hunting 3pt opportunities. Love that Danny Granger comp, but with a twist.

As a Knicks fan I sure hope he developes to at least an all star but I really hate these arguments "he is xx year old, you don't think he's going to be better"? As a Knicks fans I seen too many cases of players peaking in their first 1-2 years. I'm not saying RJ is going to be of those cases but I just hate the general argument that a player is young so his only path is to get better.

I like the Middleton comparison much more, due to RJ's lack of handle and creativity. Yes, he will improve by the time he is 25, I don't think anybody denies this, but when it comes to ballhandling, there is only so much you can do, you will not go from being bad to even being really good, never mind elite. It just doesn't happen, players who are elite and ball handling will already be very good by 20-21. That's exactly the reason why Jimmy will never be a Nr.1 championship option btw, his lack of handles necessary for that (for a wing). Paul George is a good example too, he will also not be a championship Nr.1 for this reason. He wasn't good enough early, therefore his max potential was never a championship Nr.1 potential. I guess Kawhi is the exception to this rule.

As a comp I have RJ somewhere between Butler and a taller version of prime Rodrigue Beaubois

Who knows when RJ will stop improving, but I do think that becoming a similar kind of scorer to Middleton or pre-breakdown-Granger is very possible for RJ. Where I see the Butler comp more is in RJ's playmaking potential...at least after the rule changes cut down on RJ's ability to get to the line...he already has good vision and passing skills, he just doesn't have the gravity yet to create for others consistently the way Julius & Jimmy do; even though RJ's passing is actually more accurate than Randle's.

Either way, I don't expect a big step from him this season on the offensive end. Last season Bullock handled the toughest assignment for us on the perimeter, this season that is RJ's responsibility and he took a big step defensively. So if he just replicates his output from last season with some flashes like we got last night, I will be very happy. Next year is when I think we see his off-the-dribble game take a significant step...whether that be through improving his craftiness at the rim or his pull-up game.

Did you think posting this garbage twice made it any less garbage? 5 games and you think these kinda stats are meaningful? Just to show how dumb they are here’s how they look after 1 more game:

17/6/3
-2.4 BPM
.590 TS% (not sure where to get rTS)
15.7 PER
.118 WS/48

Don’t know if RJ will become Jimmy Butler. Can only pray he does. But a 5 game sample size of stats as your argument shows you don’t watch the Knicks and you don’t understand stats.

Listen if you don’t think rj is one of the best young small forwards then please provide better.

As stats show he keeps progressing.

Stats also show he keeps add more to his overall game.

Stats also show his defense has gotten better each year.

For get Jimmy butler for a example and look at jaylen brown.

Similar advancement.

To be naive and say this young man isn’t getting better is just dumb.

Rj is a player everybody would want. Young, smart & a great locker room player with skills.

Am I saying he will be mvp one day no. Can he be? Yes a lot of player can be.

RJ is more like Harrison Barnes as his comp, (Wing shooter from the corners, can score abit, can defend, can handle the rock). But not to an elite level. RJ just doesn’t have the chops for it. Besides just watch them different play-styles and body shapes altogether .

Whereas Butler is like a better facilitating, better defending less athletic, less explosive Wade (like 2012 Wade or something similar to that nature).

One is a high grade offensive hub which are premium number one tier players while RJ has never shown that type of game.

The problem is people are falling into tribalism thinking the OP is suggesting RJ is as good asJimmy Butler now. No the post is about RJ's development path and Butler's path. This should be on the Bulls board.

Their development paths are very similar in terms of adding a new piece to their game every year.

Butler all of a sudden became a confident player year 4 or 5. "I didn't see what happened to Rose's eye. I was waiting for the ball to come back around." Remember when that Jimmy arrived?

Heat fans can't fully speak to Jimmy's development because he developed on the Bulls.

It has been quite a struggle for RJ so far this season, are the Jimmy Butler projections still on track?

This definitely hasn’t aged well with the struggles that Barrett has had this season.

He’ll be lucky if he turns into Tayshaun Prince.

That 2019 off season was a disaster for the Knicks..

Had the best odds to land Zion and ended up number 3 in draft with 2 surefire superstars and ended up with RJ..

Had the cap space to sign KD and Kyrie.. ended up with Julius Randle whose regressed from last seasons form and is clearly not cut out to be the lead man on a winning team..
