Won't win too many games in this league when your third overall pick is a bust.

I wouldn't say it's regression. It's that he's basically the same player as last year, which was improvement over a fairly bad rookie season.

It's disappointing because he didn't magically unlock another level he was never going to get to anyway.

This all goes back to the nightmare that was the 2019 offseason.

What we're seeing are just the residual effects of that summer.

Knicks:

> Entered the lottery with the best odds to land the #1 pick, fell back to #3
> Missed out on two generational prospects at #1 and #2, passed on a great talent in Garland to draft a bust in RJ
> Missed out on KD and Kyrie, who signed with the neighbor Nets to add insult to injury
> Signed Elfrid Payton and Julius Randle

Just a complete and utter disaster all-around.

You can't make this stuff up. Typical Knicks.

Rose isn't a basketball savant, or an analytics expert. He has no expertise, besides a network of relationships that would've been useful in a different time period. I never understood why people ever had faith in this front office - it always seemed like wishful thinking to me.

Thibs is a basketball Republican. He's not going to experiment or innovate. He's predictable and risk averse.

We shouldn’t blame the players. The mistakes happened before any personnel move. These two hires put us on a path to mediocrity.

We just don't have good decision-makers.

The problem starts with Dolan who mandates that the Knicks need to remain competitive rather then do a full rebuild. It’s always a quick fix/rebuild on fly/try to be competitive plan to try to keep seats filled rather then a real long term rebuild. It’s just harder to pull off.

Dolan did sign off on a rebuild, but his trust was betrayed because the two people in charge were incompetent and didn't fulfill their promises (Mills and Perry). They made him look like a fool.

Dolan gave them the green light to tank for Zion.

Which was absolutely the right move.

The Knicks got unlucky at the lottery (as they always do because they are cursed), missed out on two generational prospects and made the wrong pick at #3 (RJ over Garland).

Then they missed out on KD and Kyrie.

That summer will forever live in infamy. It set this franchise to fail for at least a decade.

PS: Big picture I agree with you though. But I think Dolan is scarred by this public humiliation.

Dolan did put his trust into Mills, but that in itself was a horrible decision. Mills had no business running a team. I don't think they were trying to intentionally tank. Mills plan was to try to be competitive but the Knicks were horrible so they had to pivot, which was fine. But in the grand scheme they had no real plan

Steve Mills was completely incompetent, and set back this franchise another decade, but I do believe the tank was intentional that year. Even if that were true, it doesn't excuse all the damage he inflicted on this franchise though.

You forgot to add:

Mr. Orlando has a nice ring to it. He is the magic personified. He probably sleeps on a Nordictrack.

His efficiency is way down this year. Under 50% TS. I'm in panic mode on him.

Knicks about to hit laughingstock status, Same ol' Knicks laughs, there goes even the "starph*cking" that Rose was supposed to deliver.

Good times.

What hurts the most is not just that RJ doesn't look like a future star.

He doesn't even look like a rotation player on a good team.

He's just not NBA starter material.

And it sucks.

(As does Fournier.)

I don't look at stats. I just see he's the same player that sometimes gets hot from 3. Or not. And struggles to drive that ball unless it's transition or a mismatch, and can't finish that well around the rim, see prior phrase.

He's just an unfortunate combination of not athletic/fast enough and not talented enough to make up for it.
It is what it is.
I mean, if LFT was faster, quicker, had a better handle and more skills, he had have been excellent.
But nature didn't grant those gifts, so he wasn't.
Same for RJ.

It’s a really weak draft. But it would be typical Knicks to tank in the wrong years.

Wasn’t the Ant Edwards/LaMelo draft described as “weak” too?

It was weak bc it was only a 2 player draft and we won’t be picking top 2. Last draft, it was a 8-10 player draft. Also, the guys going top 3 in this upcoming draft wouldn’t have gone top 10 last year. It’s not a strong draft. But if we somehow the lottery (lol) then Jaden Hardy is my guy
