I wouldn't say it's regression. It's that he's basically the same player as last year, which was improvement over a fairly bad rookie season.
It's disappointing because he didn't magically unlock another level he was never going to get to anyway.
His efficiency is way down this year. Under 50% TS. I'm in panic mode on him.
I don't look at stats. I just see he's the same player that sometimes gets hot from 3. Or not. And struggles to drive that ball unless it's transition or a mismatch, and can't finish that well around the rim, see prior phrase.
He's just an unfortunate combination of not athletic/fast enough and not talented enough to make up for it.
It is what it is.
I mean, if LFT was faster, quicker, had a better handle and more skills, he had have been excellent.
But nature didn't grant those gifts, so he wasn't.
Same for RJ.

I'm not a Thibs guy - even wrote a pamphlet about him - but he's the least of our problems right now.

Jimmit79 was a lone voice in the wilderness for a while.
Time to put some respek on his name.

Yup.
RJ is a turning point in my Knicks fandom in a way.
I think I have a way more realistic approach to players now. I think I was forcing some sense of deluded optimism or wishful thinking with him from the time he was a prospect at Duke because I subjectively liked him as a player and as a person, and I bet on him in a way.
Looking at the stats during the offseason (without the natural high that came from the wins last year - which were mostly driven by our bench as we know), it was then obvious that RJ actually wasn't good last year.
I never minded the fact that he was worse than anticipated coming into the league - but I always said I would remain optimistic so long as he shows progress. And he hasn't. In fact, his regression (from already "not good") has been spectacular.
Now, progress isn't always linear, but the pattern of inefficiency and the eye test just point towards an ineffective player who simply (and sadly) lacks the requisite talent and athleticism to become a significant player in the NBA. The evidence is overwhelming.
