Re: Ceiling of Evan Mobley
The next 18 months in Cleveland will determine if Mobley’s tenure there will be competitive, or not. Unless a Spurs-ian scenario plays out (or lottery luck), they won’t be drafting high enough the next few seasons to get an elite talent. They will need to make some deals to fix the roster composition.
1. Do they re-sign Sexton, or not? It’s a lot of cap space. He can probably be moved for a decent piece. Awful timing for him to look bad this season and tear his meniscus.
2. Where will they get their wing they desperately need? You are what you defend. Mobley may gain more perimeter skills, but he’s a big on defense.
3. Is Okoro the SG of the future? The dude can barely dribble. Not long enough to stifle true SFs. Sort of a flawed swing man at present.
Garland
Okoro (for now)
???
Mobley
Allen
That mystery SF needs to be a beast for the team to be a true competitor IMO.

Honestly see him as a wing not a big.
Saying his ceiling is KD....literally one of the greatest and most prolific scorers in the history of the NBA, is both lazy and reaching.
I definitely do agree though, he's nowhere near as "big" as I previously mentioned. He definitely has significantly more zip than a traditional big. He gets off his feet quick and can contort his body very swiftly.
I think a reasonable comp could be a more mobile/athletic young Pau Gasol.
I said Ceiling.
Not that he will become KD. But if he puts the work in to improve his shot, doesn't get injured and doesn't lose his agility while putting on muscle, yea he could hit Durant levels.
I disagree with Gasol but that's all good.

Re: Ceiling of Evan Mobley
The Kevin Durant comparisons are going to piss a lot of people off but I understand where the comparisons are coming from. Both are really tall. Both really skinny. Both glide on the court. Kind of have similar dimensions.
They profiled very differently insofar as play style coming out of college as freshman. Kevin Durant was a scoring prodigy who absolutely dominated scoring and rebounding. Mobley is a defensive prodigy who played inside an offense and was not ball dominant.
Durant is at worst one of the five best scorers ever and will likely finish consensus top 3. Some people think he’s the best already.
The chance of Mobley reaching that scoring proficiency is basically nil. We aren’t really sure what Mobley is going to be offensively. He’s already an effective rim runner. He’s shown a willingness to shoot from 3. He’s heavily assisted on his makes. That said, he’s also shown a face up game and some moves. Nice jumper form, can finish with both hands at the rim.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he became a wing. I’ll say that much. But top 5 scorer ever? Nah. There is a development path that you have to be on way before age 20 and he simply wasn’t on it coming into the league.

Take rep aside and actually look at the impact.
Say for example so far performing this year it’s:
Gobert
Butler
Giannis
Embiid
Green
Davis
After that is Mobley in the conversation? That’s such high praise for a rookie big who hasn’t physically matured yet, but it’s very valid based on his impact.
Do you think he can bulk up like Giannis?

It's funny that people keep mentioning these names because he literally seems like what you would get if you spliced their genes together

Maybe in terms of impact, but there's no way he becomes that level of scorer.

The best thing about Mobley so far is his undeniable impact as a 20 year old. When he and Allen are both playing the Cavs' defense and winning % has been great.

Thats not to say he's a better player or has a better career than LeBron. That's unachievable. But LeBron always put the team below his own self interest and had one foot out the door the entire time he was here and basically held the team hostage.
Was Duncan a better player than LeBron? No, but he was a better Spur than LeBron was a Cav by a country mile. Same with Steph as a Warrior. Same with Giannis as a Buck. Same as Malone for the Jazz. Etc.
If Mobley brings the Cavs a title without whoring himself out and forcing everyone around him to fall in-line with his own self interests he becomes a better Cav.
Lebron spent his first 7 years without any indication of pressuring the organization or hinting he was gonna leave. In his first stint he Took them to their 3rd finals appearance in at 22, and won more playoff series than Cleveland had in the rest of their history.
Then he came back to lead them to 4 straight finals and their first title in history.
Theres no way Mobley has a bigger impact

i don't know from numbers but this dude you build teams around. while the two guys ahead of him get their numbers this guy's team will put up w's
he took usc, of all schools, deeeep into the playoffs and had people thinking "whoah, waaiiiit a minute"
so i guess his ceiling is 50+ wins. what's cade's and jalen's

PEDs work. And Giannis is evidence of that.
So, yes.

Mobley is awesome but this is laughable. Tim Duncan was an MVP candidate the second he stepped into the league. He was the best big man in the league from like 2002 to 2008 and then was again in 2013 in his late 30s. It’s like saying Mac Jones’s median outcome is Joe Montana.
