Team All-Scoring vs Team All-Purpose (Simmons for Marion)

Post#1 » by rand » Sat Dec 4, 2021 8:55 am

What wins, a team full of elite scorers who are not good at anything else or players who are great at practically everything but scoring?

Current refs.

Team All-Scoring
2006 Gilbert Arenas
2022 Devin Booker
2013 Carmelo Anthony
2005 Amare Stoudemire
2022 Karl-Anthony Towns

Team All-Purpose
2003 Jason Kidd
2015 Andre Iguodala
2021 Ben Simmons
2016 Draymond Green
2014 Joakim Noah

edit: I swapped Marion out for Simmons to further handicap the scoring potential of Team All-Purpose. Does it make any difference?

For reference, the All-Purpose five combined for 67.4 PPG vs the All-Scoring's 131.5 PPG. Obviously it's not that simple though.

Kidd and Marion can definitely be the scorers, and also prime Iggy. The offensive talent on the other side is brilliant, but there are two sides to bball.

I get that the idea is that Team All-Purpose will struggle to score. But I don't think they'll struggle to score against this no-defense lineup.

It still wont be pretty...but Marion and Kidd are just going to scrap their way to a bunch of points. I think you can box out Towns and then just bully Team All-Scoring on the boards for a bunch of extra possessions. There's not enough shooting here, but there's a ton of passing and good finisher. Joakim Noah becomes a 15ppg scorer matching up against Amare and Towns. Marion has a field day getting guarded by Melo or Booker or Amare.

I don't think team all-scoring is going to produce efficient offense. 5 explosive scorers with enough shooting to space it, but where is the passing? 3 mid-range assassins in Booker, Melo, Amare. I picture the bigs never getting the ball so Towns is a glorified floor spacer. Even with Arenas and Towns spacing the floor for Melo/Booker/Amare to go to work, I think in a 3-on-3 game, this defense can still hold, or reduce them to a level of efficiency that wont be enough.

I think I'd trust Booker as a floor general more than Arenas. Towns is probably the best passer on this squad, and he's not really a good passer (throws nice passes but throws crazy turnovers just as often).

I guess I trust the brains on All-purpose to figure it out, more than I trust the tunnel vision explosive scoring squad.

Honestly, this game sounds like what watching the Raptors has been like this year. Extreme versatility and defensive flexibility but such a ridiculous lack of rim pressure and primary scoring that any kind of offense gives them trouble.

All-Purpose considering team scoring has two shooting guards, Carmelo and 2 centers.

The spacing & shooting on the all purpose team is simply too atrocious to ignore.
