It isnt Claxtons fault. he shouldn't be on the floor in that situation. Johnson was fouled so we had the ability to sub. up 3 with 35 seconds left you cant have poor FT shooters on the floor. Clax was great, but needed aldridge for that possession.

I kind of agree with you, but i don't. Being able to switch Claxton on Luka was a waaaaay better option defensively than letting Aldridge getting put on an island versus a top 5 player.

I thought that the risk assessment was solid here.

Also, you know who probably loved having Claxton on the floor in the 4th? James Harden.

Gonna give Steve Nash some credit here:

1) the challenge on the Harden strip of Luka. That was honestly the end of the game right there

I dont love this challenge. i mean, its not a bad challenge. but your challenge a play where we dont get possesion (jump ball), we dont take points off the board (no a shooting foul) we dont take a 6th foul off a star (harden had 4 fouls) and we would have had 0 timeouts if we lost... additionally, it was a 50-50 call.

theres 50 seconds left, so worth the gamble given there probably wont be a challengeable play the rest of the game. but the end result was the mavs still had possesion as they won the tip.

2) using the Harden/Mills/Durant/Johnson/Claxton line up down the stretch. That was maximum length and able to switch on everything. Look at the point disparity in the 4th. We shut Dallas down.

Almost all of dallas points down the stretch where exploiting mills being on the floor and brooklyns "switch all" defense. Luka abused mills possession after possesion either with a bucket or getting to the rim forcing help and passing for a wide open shot. dont switch mills or dont have mills on the floor there.

I'd keep mills in and make luka give it up at half court. the way dallas did a couple times with KD. hard double at the logo. make one of their other guys who cant create offense create offense.

or... I'd have Bembry up. we were ahead at the time. they went on a 6-1 run during that stin to go up 4. Bembry prevents that, and i mean, maybe we still find a way to score with KD/Harden on the floor right?

We held them to 13 in the 4th so going at the defensive strategy there is just nitpicking. Mills and Luka isn't an ideal matchup but we forced them to play isoball and outside of a few possessions, made him uncomfortable with help when he got to the paint.

We really have to play with this type of aggression on offense for 4 quarters. It felt like a different team out there in the 4th. The guys were really locked in and we were hunting great shots every possession. Not just settling or pounding the rock til the shot clock was gone.

Im surprised we didn't foul up 3. After a couple of our disaster games last year, that's been automatic for us. Wonder if that was just showing faith in the defense. It almost burned us.

I don't want to see Millsap again after what Johnson and Claxton did tonight. If anyone deserves a shot, it's Blake - who looked like an all star compared to Millsap.

You have to sub out claxton there. its non-negotiable. your giving them a chance by having a guy out there they can force the ball to and whom is awful at the line. put aldridge in and now there are no risks to miss both shots. it probably end sup with johnson, who iced the game vs the knicks in the same situation.

if we make the Fts they call timeout, you sub claxton back in.

if we miss you foul (up 3 and under 20 seconds)

I don't agree with leaving Mills versus Luka one on one. but I do agree with leaving him on the floor for offense with three lengthy players at SF/PF/C, two of which aren't shooters. It could have been handled better definitely, but the line up won us the game regardless.

I don't think we even want to see what happens if we put harden and kd on the floor with Bembry, JJ and Claxton. You need at least one other shooter.

Foul. you absolutely foul there. Don't let them get a shot off to tie it. They cant advance the ball with a timeout and we are +1 with the ball even if they make both free throws. ESPECIALLY with someone like Luka, who can hit from anywhere

This is getting annoying. I don't believe Nash who played organized bball as a pg (and a great one at that) all his life, does not know what the best strategy is. Even in the unlikely event that he doesn't know, no assistant ever consult him? It's almost like he knows what's best but is too noble to win games any other way.

Nice comeback win. We have some clutch players on this team. Being clutch is more than making shots in the last minute. It's about making timely shots and stops. Patty, LMA, Bembry has been clutch. Harden played efficient and didn't throw the ball away 5 times this game. I keep preaching this but every game seems close like it comes down to the final possessions. I understand we're losing a few guys but it seems like every night KD has to play hero ball in the last minute . We should be beating some of these teams comfortably, maybe not the Mavs but definitely some other teams . I can see KD resting tomorrow against Rockets. I would like to see more of the rookie in that one.

Man the Mavs really screwed themselves. Porzingis is just wayy too soft and doesn't use his height/strength to his advantage. Him and doncic don't fit. And they had a golden opportunity this past summer to acquire a star or impact player and they just resigned THJ. They are wasting Doncic. but then again, Doncic looks FAT ! Even Reggie Miller was saying this is the biggest he's ever seen Doncic. I mean how can he always be out of shape, and we're already a quarter into the season.

Crazy thing is Luka is coming off of the playoffs and then the olympics. So he should've been in peak physical form to start the season. He had a few months off and he ballooned in weight that much? that's terrible.

You are up 3 with 20 seconds to go, you foul, they get two shots and they can cut it to 1 putting more pressure on us. Instead, Nets played great defense without fouling putting pressure on Mavs to tie and they while they got a good look at the end, they were either gonna lose or tie and they lost. If it became a two possession game with Nets only up 1, we are screwed. I don’t agree with others take on this last possession. Nets defended it beautifully without giving the Mavs two points at the line and with twenty seconds to go, pressure was on Dallas, not the Nets.
