Golden State or Lakers?

Post#1 » by myrak433 » Wed Dec 8, 2021 2:48 pm

Should the Hawks continue with the Golden State module of building the team with daft picks? Or should the Hawks pivot and go the Lakers route and consolidate?

If they continue? We have our super star in Trae, but who is our Klay (huerter? Bogi? Cam?) who is our Draymond, Hunter? Collins? What about iguodala and shaun livingston? I dont know?

If the Hawks consolidate, who do they trade and who do they keep? Who do they target in a trade?

I would say keep Trae Young (obviously) and maybe Capela. Then depending on who the Targets are trade (in order from who to keep most to last) JC, Huerter, Hunter, Cam, Bogi, Onyeka, Jalen Johnson, and Cooper. Out of that 8 keep two or three. Could KAT and CJ be had? could Simmons?

What do you all think?

The problem is that it would be a gamble as both KAT and CJ had not reach better than what this ATL did last season, despite playing some season with a good team.
And since this team ended on 2-4 in ECF, while being the most injured team in the playoffs, I would try a playoffs campaign with them all healthy, and it's the biggest problem IMO : last season, with all these injuries, everybody had to contribute when healthy, and it created something, something that they lacked in the beginning of this season, added with the worst calendar on the 12-13 first games.
This team can be a contender, but for that, they have to be healthy, and before the playoffs, because they didn't find a way to play right until now with almost all guys available, unless... they would have a higher record if Okongwu had been available, because they were often bad when Capela was on the bench

I still believe that a fully healthy roster can beat any team in this league

If the question is should we stay the course or consolidate -- I fully believe we'll need to and should consolidate 2nd and 3rd tier assets into an upgrade.

The question is who goes and who stays. Collins is the most attractive trade asset but has recently played himself into untouchable territory. Trae is obviously the guy for ATL...anyone else can and should be on the table to improve this team.

It takes elite players to win in this league. Trae Young is elite. Collins is an elite role player. No one else is untouchable.

And Cam, Hunter and Okongwu will all be up for some level of commitment/extension in the next 18 months. On top of all the contracts we've dished out, we can't keep everyone.

LAL traded their youth for Anthony Davis.
KAT is close to that caliber.
CJ McCallum doesn't fit in that same tier (he also just suffered a collapsed lung and out indefinitely).

I know CJ is not the same caliber, that is why I thought we maybe able to get someone of his caliber along with a star player like KAT. but even though he is not of the same caliber if CJ was on the Hawks with the current roster, he would be the 2nd best player by a mile.

But it doesn’t have to be CJ. Malcolm Brogdon would work as well. Just another 20 points per game type player.

I was campaigning for Lavine hard last season and this past off season, and was laughed at. That ship has sailed now (it is to late now). The hawks would have to trade Trae for Lavine now. And then the Bulls probably say no

The problem is will the current roster ever be fully healthy? Hunter and Cam have been battling injuries since they came into the league. Cam has since before he got drafted. Bogi seems to be injury prone. Capela same.

Right, and I'm a bit concerned by some points :
- even if he was needed, Hunter came back to early last season
- they were several to have surgery, and were not ready for the beginning of the season, where we had the worst schedule... it certainly helped.
- we signed some years ago one Chelsea Lane, from GSW (she took care of Cuury, and Thompson and Curry got big injuries after she leaves if I'm not wrong) : guess what, ATL and her parted ways this summer, maybe after so many injuries last season (but it was a hard season for everybody), and it's now even worst, but again, it can be consequences from last season.

Now, KAT played 35, then 50 games the last two seasons... and McCullum played 70,70 and 47 the last three seasons (and he's now injured), so these two may not change anything.

There's only one intelligent way to approach this...always be open to the potential of a wise consolidation trade that you think will improve the team. Until then continue to develop these young guys and try to make them special.

It's not like Schlenk isn't going to answer his phone or possibly even make a call. If someone he wants shakes loose, of course he'll think about it. This is not an either / or situation. It's a be open to both situation
