Evidence Simmons Naturally Right Handed
Simmons is uncomfortable shooting the ball any distance from the rim, including foul shots. Even his fast breaks can seem weak. I’ve often wondered if he naturally was right hand dominated, but encouraged to use his left when he was growing up. And now I run into this old video from his rookie year.

Even if you’re a world class athlete, I don’t think your throw in a full court shot so fluidly with such strength with your non dominant hand. Mentally not prepared because he was programmed all wrong back when?

He’s right handed but by all reports grew up shooting it with his left from teammates when he was a kid. He’s that bad at shooting the thing he might as well change it can’t be any worse.

There’s a lot of things you can learn to do ambidextrously. Writing, ping pong. Apparently it doesn’t hurt Nadal’s tennis game. But something that requires maximal, confidant strength I think is different. (Nothing more ridiculous looking than throwing a baseball with the wrong hand. Ben is a phenom, and could muscle things better than most, but he does seem to lack intrinsic confidence in that shot. Still young, but I don’t know if he’s young enough to instill basic power activities even if he dedicated himself to it. But, as you say, I don’t know how much worse it could get from the other side.)

Re: Evidence Simmons Naturally Right Handed
I mean a lot of people do stuff with either hand. Also it just be which eye is more dominant too. We do have a natural preference to one side.
And lmao at the baseball thing or throwing in general that’s one aspect where I’ve never seen someone throw even semi decent with the wrong hand. It’s like excuse my french throwing it like a girl would lol
Kicking? Different matter know only a couple but still enough where you’d swear they are equally adapt at kicking the ball with either foot. They don’t even slow down to setup they just do it. (One of my mates broke his foot and learnt how to use the other, sick skill to have btw throws people off).
I’m left handed (damn this right handed world!) and do stuff with my right just don’t ask me to write anything on a whiteboard it’ll end up all smudgy and draggy haha!

Current international cricketer bowls left handed and throws right
I taught myself to throw left handed when suffering from a shoulder injury so definitely can be done

Yeah, the eye test is how we determine if someone is left-brain or right brain dominant. You ask the client to point at something distant with a finger, either hand, doesn’t matter, but then close one eye, open and then close the other. Which ever eye closure causes the finger to jump in the field of vision is the dominant one. Right eye, left brain dominant and vice versa. Not only does that hemisphere control your stronger side, but it also houses your language ability.
You can also judge if a left handed person is really a lefty (right brained) by how they hold their pencil. If they hold it straight like a natural righty, than they really are left handed. If they curl their hand around and push their hand through what they’re writing, they should have been right handed. That’s me. Grade school teacher thought I should write with my left. Being partially ambidextrous has some advantages, but not in basketball. I shoot with my right, but my left hand always was prone to be more active than just guiding the shot. And a two handed shot is just miserable for any consistency.

Re: Evidence Simmons Naturally Right Handed
Played cricket might be accustomed to it now but the right/left thing is kind of whatever. I should have been a right handed bat.
Know lefties that bat right
Know righties that bat left
Lefties that throw right
Righties that throw left
A person that bats left, bowls right but writes left lmao
But I tell ya what it can be the worst sport ever sometimes.

Yeah, it can be strange. I throw and kick righty, but write, eat, shoot, play guitar and racket sports lefty, so go figure.

Huh! I don’t know the game well. But was under the impression that about 25% bowl left, which is still two and a half times more than natural left handedness. And about the same, or maybe a little more bat left handed, which starts to get into the kind of percentages you see of baseball switch hitting. (Plus Bryce.)
But I still hold to throwing a baseball and shooting a basketball should be the naturally dominant hand.

Just like in Cricket, it's pretty common in baseball too for players to throw left and bat right, or vice versa.
P.S. Cricket is a much better sport than baseball haha

It's been covered quite a bit on this board. Simmons has said that he is right-handed, but when he was young his dad told time to play left handed because he thought it would give him some sort of advantage. Probably the stupidest advice I've ever heard.
It's not a debate, it's factual, Simmons shoots with the wrong hand.

You’d actually be surprised at the number of lefties in an elite sport that aren’t actually left handed. It’s a massive over representation respective of the population. Reverse stances like in baseball give you a huge leg up because your dominant hand has much more control. In shooting it’s very important to know which eye is more dominant.
Haha I feel ya it’s either I shoot it like Curry or I clank it like Danny Green there’s no in between at all. I know when I shoot it badly straight away too. I hate thinking about the shot when going step by step it brings up so much inconsistency just to fix it lol

Both games are essentially played from a side on position so as Case says, dominant eye plays a big role in determining which side you bat from

Played both, both have their positive and negatives. (It’s the only sport where I think I’ve clocked up twenty hours in a game and you’d swear you got worse and had nothing to do with form lol) known foreign guys that actually prefer Rugby and Cricket over Baseball and NFL respectively.
Played Cricket the most and I’ve played a ton of other sports, it’s great game for the mind in that way it’s just far superior than anything else. Excruciatingly difficulty to upskill that’s a main point of it, no matter how good or how bad the relative skill pool is it’s very very close 9/10 times.

Golfer Tom Kite had a really interesting take on mechanics
Within reason, he didn’t try to change the shape of his ball flight on the range before a round because he wanted to keep things as simple as possible e.g. he was hitting fades on the range then he would set up for fades in the round
At one point, he was the highest earner so must be something to it

Hardly ever played Cricket since I've lived in the US my entire life, but I generally find it more fun to watch than Baseball.

I’m a big advocate of trying new sports if you are still able to. It’s a sport you can play well into your 40’s if you still keep healthy but it’s all skill in the end. Check locally you’ll be surprised how many different sports at the rec/local level.
I play mixed netball/indoor football some nights as a fill in it’s fun as heck. Indoor football though man even at that level there’s more than a few guys that are flat out so much better than everybody else
The thing it has over baseball is that there’s more overall play involved with basically no stop/start rotation action unless innings break. It’s constant and everyone is ton more live. Ive won a couple games of my fielding

My mate didn’t get it now all day long he talks about it once he sat down to watch the Ashes with all the boys lol. Doesn’t shut up about the tactics
