I'm constantly underwhelmed by Turner when he does anything besides protect the rim (which he's amazing at). He can shoot, but the release isn't quick. He has a high center of gravity and weak, inflexible legs, so he gets knocked around the paint. He very much is a role player. A valuable role player yes, but I'm not sure what Turner thinks he could do on another roster.
I've not watched a second of the Pacers yet this year under Carlisle. Was wondering if you or someone else could help me know how often is Turner the screener in the PNR? A lot, or is that mainly Sabonis? If its Sabonis that's definitely an area where he could feel more utilized. I know one of the changes Kidd made with KP is using him a lot more as a screener which gets KP far more engaged in the offense.
But yeah if he looks at Sabonis and thinks that should be me, well no. Or if he looks at Jerami Grant going to a terrible team and putting up a bunch of shots and hence more points, that's not exactly been a good thing either.
But sometimes you have to go somewhere else to accept who you are. You'd like to think when your 4th straight coach is using you in similar fashion that you might come to terms with it, but he might also feel like he's never been given a fair shot. But the teams likely to want to trade for him aren't going to be thinking in terms of a larger offensive role.
I'd guess, by my eye, that Turner probably gets used/passed to as the role man, half as much as Sabonis? Turner gets used as a floor spacer for Sabonis when the 2 share the floor, which makes sense because Sabonis is the much stronger physical presence in the paint. Hitting Sabonis on the roll gives you a juicy chance at a bucket or free throws. Turner has some athleticism as a dive man, but his lack of a strong base means he needs more of a lane, since he doesn't create space through contact. If Caris Levert is running that pick & roll, neither of them are getting the ball though, because the man LUVS to take the elbow pull-up JEESH. I've always rooted for Levert's herky-jerky creation skills, but this year he's getting to the rim less, hitting less 3s and just very predictably going to that tough shot over and over...
Turner could look at Sabonis and think he deserves those rolls. Turner isn't bad as a roll man and on the right team, he could easily double his roll man role. Haven't seen it, so I don't picture him as a great roller but, like you said with Jerami Grant, he probably could be that guy who shoots more gets more points. Myles Turner, the 17ppg scorer on 55%TS sounds imaginable. Playing with Sabonis isn't the best way to highlight the full extent of his offensive abilities maybe, though Sabonis does mask some of his weaknesses, like rebounding.
The KP comparison I think is pretty bang on, though KP has a much quicker trigger on the outside. They both lack an important degree of physicality at the center position.

Agreed. As a potential suitor, that quote is concerning.
New York is a place where I think he can work. If he's replacing Mitch or Nerlens, you're keeping that rim protection and adding a workable 3-point shot. Robinson is a better roll man than Turner, but who cares, New York never hits Robinson on the roll! The guy is averaging less than 4 FGA per game! I don't think I've ever seen him miss and I've barely ever seen him touch the ball lol. Thibs loves to empower the ball handler to score (a conservative, low turnover offense has always been his preference it seems), and New York has the personnel (Randle, Rose, Kemba, Fournier, even Barrett when they let him) to play that Thibs style. Turner staying out of the way probably works in New York better than NoRob right now. You lose some rebounding, but Randle and Barett are plus rebounders.
