Well I'd love a healthy TJ Warren but he's a starter quality player.

As I've said, personally, I think we are set with our 9 man rotation and emergency players after them.

Though I would love it if we had Desmond Bane (if not Tyrese Haliburton).

I think we are more in need of another ballhandler that can defend and shoot than a wing or big or PF. If we could get both or someone who had size and could playmake (Thad started doing this last year), that is ideal, but my biggest fear is an injury to CP3, Book or Payne. If we have to rely on another current guard, we are SOL in the playoffs. Having to play a few minutes of Nader isn't as bad and we can always just play more Cam at PF if Crowder gets hurt or Cam at SF if Bridges gets hurt, or our starters more if Cam gets hurt, with an emergency lineup of Book at the 3 with CP3 and Payne or Shamet.

Obviously if Ayton gets injured we are in big trouble too so that is where Thad could come in and start at C or at least come in for JaVale and play more minutes and likely finish games.

TJ's returning from being injured for a year and half, heading into free agency. I don't think we'd keep him beyond this season - hence the mercenary label. We'd bring him in to get his legs back and show what he can do on potentially the biggest stage. We get a ring, then he jets off to get his bag this summer. Win-win. That's my thought, at least, if the Pacers were willing to accept just draft considerations and a year of Dario's salary on the books. A rebuilding team might be down with that. IDK. Might be a daydream, but if Sabonis lands with Golden State, we'll need to upgrade to compete, and Thad Young just ain't it.

I don't know if a big playmaker is what I'd be looking for. I think we could really use another long perimeter defender who can knock down perimeter shots, like Justin Holiday. Booker's got the longest wingspan of our rotation guards. Mikal's the only long perimeter defender we have on the roster. I'd like another.

I guess you say big playmaker since we're not imagining a future that doesn't involve Cam Payne, and none of our forwards are playmakers unless you count Saric - and I don't, since his feet are stuck in mud, making him an undersized C who is only useful when he's hitting the 3 ball, which he only ever did for us in the bubble. Kaminsky if healthy might be the better player at this point. Which is why I'm down to trade Dario along with draft assets if necessary to get an upgrade, even if it's just for one season.

So, I see why you're interested in a big playmaker. I just don't see an available player who fits that description who is also good at basketball. I don't think Thad Young can play C at all unless the other team's going small - and even then, I'd just go with Crowder or Cam or Frank if you don't like the way McGee matches up.

I haven't brought it up because I doubt we'd consider it, but there's a little corner of my mind that wonders if dealing Ayton for Sabonis isn't totally bonkers. We lose continuity and defense, add scoring and playmaking, but don't lose anything in terms of rebounding. The real gain would be the roughly $17 million we'd save each year... and keeping Sabonis out of the Bay Area. Ayton, Saric and Smith for Sabonis and Warren or Holiday works under the cap. Hard to imagine, but I'm not sure this doesn't make us a better team. Sabonis is a helluva player.

Ayton for Sabonis isn't bonkers. Sabonis is better right now depending on how you look at it. But as long as we have Paul, Ayton is a better fit, and Ayton has far more upside and is better at defense.

I can't see Sabonis switching onto guards, though he is highly efficient, a solid rebounder and passer. I don't think it makes us better. Post Paul depending on Ayton's development? Maybe but we'd probably still suffer a great deal on defense. I'm sure you saw the quotes about Ayton guarding Giannis holding him to 53% while all other Suns he got 70% from the field. Sabonis couldn't guard him at all, nor could he switch onto smaller players, etc.

So no, I don't do it. I'm not entirely sure GS would, but maybe with Draymond on defense. But Draymond already is kind of their big who passes and they lead the NBA in rebounding, and Sabonis is a liability on defense (where they are #1 in) so how do they improve? Especially once Klay is back and he picks up the scoring.

I'm sure a team like the Clippers would love to get Sabonis somehow but don't think salaries work.

But Brooklyn, Charlotte, New Orleans and possibly Memphis would be great spots. The Pelicans could offer a bunch of picks maybe.

I think ultimately they keep Sabonis and trade Turner who could be more appealing to teams due to his shot blocking and 3 pt shooting...ability to switch, etc...and he seems to want out.

I'd argue Ayton is better today. All Defensive level C versus an average starting center defensively. Sabonis shoots worse offensively overall. He does stretch the floor better but is not Towns. He's shooting 30% from 3. Sabonis could likely be targeted on D in the playoffs because he cannot guard smaller guys. Ayton can. Sabonis does shoot it better so you get some spacing, but it's arguably not even more valuable than the gravity / rim pressure Ayton provides.

Sabonis should only be a target if he's playing the 4 alongside Ayton, which likely won't happen based on what we could offer relative to other teams.

I won't be surprised at all if he turns into a decent player with a nice skillset. We drafted him a little over a year ago and had our first game with him on the team less than a year ago, then he had COVID, injury, we were a finals team and didn't/don't/wouldn't play a raw 1 year or less experienced guy anyway. I won't even be super shocked if we try to keep him for a minimum deal if he'd be interested. Though someone else could treat him as a lotto pick with a year of experience on a finals team they can sign for a lot less than had they drafted him. I'm sure there was more than just us who liked him (not as a lotto pick but perhaps a first rounder).

I think he's similar to Myles Turner when he came out who shot under 50% as a rookie and 21% from 3 with 5 boards a game and 1.4 blocks but now is a nice shot blocker/3 pt shooter. A little like a less agile Jaren Jackson type.

Now knowing Tyrese was there it's a bad bad pick....heck I even said prior to draft I wouldn't be upset if they took Bane at #10.
Yeah you Bane fans were right. He's good. Haliburtons just been ok this year. ****, Maxey is the guy who looks the best of all the picks after Smith. Sad to see my guy Kira Lewis tore his ACL this week.

Thank you. Someone needed to say it. Haliburton has fallen off this year. That whole Sac team has, so I'm not just faulting him but the fact remains that he's not as good. I think that we'll look back on cutting the cord on Stix the same we we did when we had to watch IT lead the Celtics all those years back. That was fun times wasn't it? Watching him become an MVP candidate....

Not that I'm saying that Stix will be that good, but we hardly given him any chance to play and on paper he's what we need out of our 4-a rim runner that block shots and (maybe) hit a 3 pointer every once in awhile. I get that the timeframe got pushed up with Chris here but I think just letting Smith walk is a big mistake. One that wasn't made for basketball reasons, but because Booby $arver is being himself.

Someone has already said it, but I would love to sign Tyreke Evans.

Look, I think that we need a PF more than a perimeter player because we don't have Kaminsky, Nader and Saric available for a while BUT I would be OK signing a PG/SG/SF if he is a potential game changer as Tyreke.

He is a FA so we wouldn't need to waste players or picks to acquire him and he looks ready to show to the league that he belongs yet.

He is "just" 32 years old and hasn't played competitive basketball for a couple of years. He must be hungry, he is in very good shape now and everyone knows that he is super skilled.

James Jones and Monty Williams are smart and I am pretty sure that they know how much of a risk would be to sign Tyreke Evans, no way they sign him if he doesn't have the right mentality and personality.

A two year contract with an small guaranteed money on the first one and a team option on the second one would be great for us.

It is "funny." I was torn on Smith as a prospect, kept moving him up and down my board. Liked Paul Reed (2nd round) about as much or more. I liked Bane a lot, thought he might be a good selection, thought there was a chance we'd take him #10. If I was drafting for us, I probably would've taken Vassell, who I like better than Halliburton today.

I predicted Jones would take Smith because it seemed like a possibly very clever surprise reach, a la Cam Johnson, but also fairly conservative because I thought his long ball would translate. But when I saw his dumb@ss tweets being posted after the draft, I was like, whoa there. Stupid people are rarely great ballers. Not saying he's stupid, but... hard to rule it out.

A big bummer all around. Bane would be an awesome add to this group. Oh well, there's always the next draft... oh wait.

Not only was I fine with Bane at 10, but knowing he was taken at 30 which ended up being what would have been our pick but we traded for Ty Jerome and Aron Baynes, and at the time I wished we would have just kept the pick and re-signed Holmes (I remember part of my reasoning was his cap hold was less than half of the salary we took on for Baynes, which I think played a part in having to dump other salaries like JJ/Melton..not sure on that part but definitely wish we kept Holmes at backup and the 1st rounder).

If we signed Holmes for what Sac did that year we would have had him last year along with Bane (and still have Bane). We might still have Holmes too but he probably would have gotten bigger contract than what we would have wanted to pay a backup this last summer.

What would it take to nab Christian Wood? I assume they would want a player they can have control over but if they would take pics, would something like Saric, Smith, and 2 firsts work? Is that being too cheap? I imagine so. I haven't followed them enough to know.

I just feel like we're in the 'all-in' phase and need to do whatever is necessary to win it all. I just don't know what his value is or what they want in return.

Last 10 minutes or so of the most recent Lowe Post podcast. Zach and Bobby Marks go over the Suns in terms of trades. Lowe said he thinks they "will and should" trade Dario, Smith, and a 2024 first (which Bobby confirmed they can trade) for someone. He brought up that the home run for us is Jeremi Grant, but doesn't think that package gets us there. The Grant idea was just his speculation, not any rumors he has heard.

I haven't heard anything about Wood being on the block, but it would take more than we could offer. Besides,we couldn't offer picks until 24 and 26 and who knows how good we are there.

I imagine if he is traded someone will offer a more enticing package. If Memphis wanted to start him at C rather than Adams who has been playing less, they could offer several young players and picks.

The Bulls could offer Coby White and another prospect or pick. Charlotte could probably make a pretty good offer. I don't think he'd be happy not starting either.

I doubt we are looking at guys like that or want that much salary next year. I doubt they would want to take on Saric instead of Wood for picks 3-5 years in the future and likely not great picks.

It will be interesting to see what happens, and if Saric is on the table. He should be but I know Monty loves him and Saric loves it here after going through depression in Minnesota and I know Monty is sympathetic towards that. Not that it should stop a trade.

However, I don't see that package as a good one AT ALL for a team, particularly a rebuilding team. I don't think Saric holds much value as he wasn't athletic before and even coming back next year who knows? It's almost like a lot of dead salary and Smith is kind of worthless since a team can sign him anyway if they want him, and for more than if they trade for him. He is an UFA. Unless a team wants slight cap relief.

I predict if anything, a Thad Young signing after buyout, but I also think someone would offer him a starting role, even the Bulls. They traded him but they also might rather have him start than Patrick Williams since they are fighting for a top seed.

A team like the Clips might start him too with Kawhi out. Or Denver over Green.

So finally the national media caught up to me as well. Rolling with what we got might get us there, but it is our obligation to try to upgrade and sezie all opportunities to enchance our chances of winning it all. We got this year and next. That's it. Let it sink in. This year and next. That's it.

This package might not get you Grant (it shouldn't in reality), but it could get you Thad. Then we should get someone from the buyout market too. That still might not be enough if the Warriors get better, or we have an unlucky injury, but at least we can't say we haven't tried our best to hit that home run when we had the best chance to knock it out of the ballpark.

I used to think Wood would be a possibility but with how they've played lately and with how he's played during that time I think they keep him to build around with Green. He's young enough to fit their window. Have to hope Grant decides he hates losing more than he loves the Detroit front office.

Yeah, as much as Monty likes Dario, I don't see a place for him in our rotation, and I don't think we can afford *not* to go all-in this season. I'm not a huge fan of trading future FRPs, but times like these are the exception. It's not like we're any good at drafting anyway.

The thing is, I just don't see us breaking apart our starting 5. Meaning we're looking at a potential super-6th - a starting-quality bench player who gets 30 a night. Preferably a well-rounded scorer. Part of what makes me eager to add a scorer to our bench unit is Cam Payne's struggles with turnovers this season. His 3 is still dropping, but he's getting locked up in the paint on his drives. Between him and McGee, they're generating a lot of turnovers. A bona fide scorer would go a long way not only to shoring up that unit, but in allowing us to swap Bridges or Crowder for someone who can generate offense when needed. Paul and Booker can't do it all.

All. In.

I wonder if we might be interested in Tyus Jones next summer. He expires and since he has been playing over 20 minutes for Memphis, they are 6-1.

He also is shooting 40% from 3 with over a 5/1 ast/to ratio this year which is crazy good. I think he could possibly be a solid starter (has been for Memphis since Ja has been out) and could be a consideration for future PG post Paul.

I know the name isn't big when thinking post CP3 but thinking of big names like Lillard, etc, we just won't be able to afford.

You could think of Tyus Jones as a better version of Derek Fischer. A guy to start and possibly do handling next to Book who can hit the 3 and has an insane ast/to ratio. He's not a bad defender either and seems to be perfect for Monty's system.

I don't know that Memphis would prioritize keeping him given that in addition to Ja, they have Melton, Bane and Brooks and also have JJJ's second contract kicking in next year and a likely max to Ja the summer Tyus expires.

Return to Phoenix Suns
