Tough to compare, in Chess (more so than most sports) you build off of the greats before you, though the computer age slightly changes that. Bobby’s run was also much shorter than even Magnus (Bobby obviously exiled himself), but more dominant and he was probably farther ahead of the competition than Magnus. Kasparov has the best case for GOAT still.

Kasparov still has a good case, but man...Magnus's level of dominance I think gets underrated even more so because of this being the era of computers and the amount of computer theory these guys have to memorize and understand.

well, obviously modern players would beat past players, just more theory and all. But magnus is legit the goat chess player at this point.

I had no idea Chess worked that way. I just always assumed Bobby Fisher was the goat because of the movie.

Fisher wouldn’t be top 20 or maybe he would be even worse. He famously didn’t respect the prep or the memorization and at some and at some point these guys are now so ready because of the tools that he wouldn’t be able to keep up.

And that’s not an insult, it’s just realizing that these guys took a quantum leap in the last 2 decades and that created magnus... he is legit like Jordan in the way he is keeping other great players from shining.

The reason we know this is because we can analyze old games and they see the flaws in these former players positions...

In other words, great moves would be blunders now a days....

It’s all positional up until minute variation....

Plus his end game set up is ungodly

I think he would take Ls I think....

Computers are on another level now...I don’t know if deep blue still plays but there is a engine world championship....and all these terminators would destroy Magnus because alas he is only human....barely human...more like Demi god...but these are true terminators with ELOs in the 3300s

Well people study prior players and build off of them, but in the last 20 years computers have slowly changed things, and with alpha zero the game has completely changed.

The last one vs the american....who I"m forgetting his name, was REALLY competitive. This wasn't. And I do think Nepo kinda blew it and kinda lost it. But....yeah he's great.

Ummm, this is utterly wrong. He studied and memorized as much as anyone to ever live when he was working on his game. He ALSO didn't like that aspect of the game, but make no mistake he was a guy who studied the theory like crazy. But he was as good as anyone ever at memorizing theory and then innovating from it. Outside of a few guys...like Magnus.

My point is if you are crazy and dismissive and not committed, you won’t be able to compete with the guys that are all in on chess, with great tools, are as talented as you AND love the game....he hated chess and said it all the time and thus didn’t spend as much time doing it....

Again I just don’t think someone that hates something is going to beat someone that’s committed to the game and is as talent and more committed. But can I prove it...naw

This is a situation where one guy has been dominant for an extended period of time and one that is more of a legend like a figure that didn’t do it long enough to be relevant outside of the US. Russian always clown Americans when our best actual player in my day was Seattle”s own Yasser Seirawans....enough talk - DM and we can settle this on chess.com right now....

Fischer despised chess, didn't practice a tenth as much as the Russians back in the day and still was the man.

Congratulations to one of the most prodigious talents that has ever walked the earth in human history. His mid and closing game is very close to unsurpassable imo which is a more impressive feat considering how far superior AI/Al is nowadays and how many top people are gunning for him. It’s been over a decade now

If you know what’s coming it’s less dangerous. But in the classic game I’ll take Carlsen over anyone always. Dude is a brick wall + an anaconda + a vicious cobra + an innovator all in one. Share traits with all the past GOATS but man he’s different just complete. Yes there’s Kasparov and Fisher but Magnus is Magnus

Serious stand alone person here folks.

I wonder how many people actually know the different style of games played.

It’s classical, Magnus is some grim reaper god machine and that goes for every single greatest chess player before him.

Dude won blitz world and held all the major prizes in one season.

No one is on his level

It’s Magnus in terms of variety of games heads up between all three make it five with Karpov and Capablanca, Magnus would come out victorious. He shares all similarities yet no one is as complete as Magnus he is just a destroyer. It’s like you take the best of all of them and put it into one person that’s him.

Comparing Fischer to Carlsen on the basis of objective criteria (e.g. move accuracy) is pointless. Obviously he would get beaten by most GMs if you magically transport him from 1972 to 2021 without any time to prepare. Just as basketball, the game of chess has evolved massively, he would probably lose nearly every game just out of the opening. It's like saying Bob Cousy would not be an NBA level player today - I mean, it's true. But only if you just put him into today as his 1960s version, it's a different story if you gave him access to modern training methods, nutrition, analytics, tactics etc.

It's the same with Fischer. Everyone can only be compared to his own era, and Fischer dominated his peers in a ridiculous manner. He was 2800 when everyone else was below 2700, just an inhuman feat. His peak is arguably the highest ever.

However, to express it in basketball terms: He does not have the longevity. He won the title against Spassky and just vanished. Fischer is like Bill Walton, albeit with an even higher peak. And sure, he did it by his own volition, but if Jordan never came back and had just played baseball for the resr of his career, would he have any legitimate GOAT claim?

Compare that to Magnus who is like LeBron: Godly peak sustained over a very long time. If you only care for the maximum level a player has achieved, Fischer has as good of a case as anyone. If you look at the whole body of work, I don't see how anybody can call him superior. If not Kasparov, the GOAT must be Carlsen.

Also helps that he is a much better person than Fischer (not a high bar, to be fair). If you watch Magnus in interviews or streams, he is very laid back, humorous and sociable. Not your typical nerd at all, and he loves sports, including basketball. That's why he chose the song, I'd say. He just finds it fun, no need for any deeper interpretation.

I think game 6 broke Nepo. Magnus, white, NBD move by a 2700+ on record, pawn offering early, 99% 130+ move accuracy so basically vs a chess machine, game is what 8 hours long? Nepo held on 4 hours without a breakdown. Magnus just death grinds better than anyone else, the machine had as a draw lol. His middle/end game is terrifying.

To make it one of the greatest games ever played it takes two to tango. Massive props even if the last game was a letdown somewhat (kind of forced with Magnus being +3).

He isn’t Lebron or Jordan they can’t do this. Dude is some precision chess machine playing.

Fun fact: I know some of the journalists that work with Magnus Carlsen. He really loves to play basketball. So he practises against the journalist and they always let him win because then he will give them good content afterwards, but if he loses he gets really upset and does short interviews and is disintrested.
