SPURS GAME DAY! GAME 25: SPURS VS. NUGGETS, 11-12-2021, 7:30PM (CT)

Post#1 » by G R E Y » Sat Dec 11, 2021 8:55 pm

The second of our five-game home stand is the second consecutive versus the same team that is, like us, now better rested. Both teams have reinforcements returning as well, so making sure we're physical, we keep moving on O, we run back consistently on D, we protect the ball by limiting TOs and second chances, and we are mindful of the arc activity on both ends are crucial. This is a challenging match-up that will both require and test our best two-way game. The right mentality, heart, diligence, and resilience will help us achieve the positive results we seek.

Yeah I hope they allow that physicality both ways.

I don't like that we're allowing their big C to just trot down the middle for putbacks.

We have to get our O in gear.

Just like Sean just said, DJ's take at the top of the key was an open shot, but he could have - and I think SHOULD have - driven it inside. Get them into foul trouble early and often especially with their big C getting a tech early. Got at him and keep going at him.

1ST Q: SPURS 29

NUGGETS 28

Well we overcame a sluggish inefficient start and some physicality and allowing their bigs to operate inside too much for a seven-point deficit to turn into a one-point lead.

I like our 3s takes, and LOVE how we're driving relentlessly at them.

We also were down in rebounds but bridged the gap well to be within one.

Quality minutes and contribution by Lonnie so far, and I love the FU made FTs after he was fouled on purpose.

I recall saying something about protecting our arc. I recall that. We're way over-committing and too many are collapsing inside and nobody's rotating out on their kick outs where they have THREE players waiting at the arc with NOBODY covering ANY of them. It's like four 3s in a row or something.

Well it's just some rhythm issues we're having with weird foul calls, and we can't stop their 3s barrage. Derrick did a great job fighting over a screen to contest one of their more rare misses, but then on another attempt they were WIDE open. WIIIIIIIIIDE OPEN. I hope we get our asses handed to us at half time by Pop for it. Who the **** isn't rotating?!

I do like that we keep playing and pushing at them and in doing so have trimmed a 13-point lead down to 9. When we make quick decision especially in transition we get to them before they set up their D. More movement, more drives, more fouls trouble for them, more FT MADE by us.

We're missing opportunities at the rim we're creating from good D stops. And then giving up points on TOs. Bad combo.

2ND Q: SPURS 56

NUGGETS 72

What an absolute disaster ending to a Q. It was replete with everything you don't want: unforced TOs, points on them the other way, not taking advantage of our steals and rebounds for points, and then another charge called on DJ's drive and kickout for a made 3 that didn't count because of the foul. So instead of 69-59, it was a 6-point swing as we weren't ready for their end of Q make. Well Derrick was there to contest but I don't think they would even have had that opportunity were it not for the dumbfounded reaction to the O charge to begin with.

It was a barrage of 3s on us to the tune of 13-25. They made 15 3s last game in total and with our making 4-12, we are getting obliterated there.

We're getting to the FT line very well but regressing in makes for only 14-21FTs; the rebounding is close 21-19 and 4-2 on O for them, but we're leaving a LOT of points on the court. FT line is one place, our pace is another: they have a 50-37FGA advantage. We're just too slow, trying to over orchestrate points. The other advantage we usually have, points in the paint, has also been mitigated as it's a close 24-22 for them.

They're using switches to their advantage as they keep making big to big high low passes for easy put ins at the rim when they're not making just about every 3 they take. They were 9-15 from 3 in the 2ND Q alone.

Too many TOs, many unforced, and our 10TOs have cost us 16 points to earning 4 points off of theirs.

Doug has been rendered silent, 0-3, Bryn hasn't played (nor has Thad, interesting), and the bench has made only 1 3 whereas their bench has already made 8.

We're getting that deer-in-headlights feel, especially towards the end of the Q. I mean, sometimes you do everything right and it just goes sideways. It has felt like that most of the game for us, like we're reaching for a rhythm, and we're doing a lot of good things, running our sets, but the weird misses and unfocused play is really resulting us in getting tuned up for 44 points after a 9-0 run.

We need to just bring a TON of hustle here...
