Official NBA COVID Protocol thread (please read the OP)

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Wed Dec 15, 2021 5:49 pm

We've been doing our best to keep all the COVID discussion off the NBA General Board but it's not exactly possible now that we have a major wave hitting the league (along with the world in general). Lots of players in the NBA's Health and Safety Protocol right now and it looks like it will be a theme all season. So here's the thread for all related discussion. But please read and follow these guidelines so the thread will not go off the rails and get locked:

Reminder that we are welcome to talk about this topic and the impact on players, teams, and the league. We can also give thoughts on the protocol itself, since that's a major part of the topic.

But please don't get into thoughts about COVID-19 or the vaccines. Please keep your PhD's in the fields of virology and immunology tucked away. Don't make dubious statements about science and medicine that will only get people riled up and get the thread locked. DO NOT BAIT, TROLL, OR DERAIL.

The thing that happens is people start posting their thoughts on the virus and the vaccine, giving opposite theories, making dubious statements and linking dubious sources. Then others start flagging things as misinformation.

Then the mods are over here like, Yo, we're not experts on COVID. We're moderators on a basketball website. We don't want to sit here and act like we're the arbiters of truth as it relates to science and medicine. So how are the mods supposed to mod this?

The General NBA Board is for NBA basketball discussion. We understand it can be a fine line and difficult to separate in some cases, so please err on the side of caution and help us out. If you wonder if you should be saying something, probably just don't say it. We have a current affairs board, and there are many other sites where people are encouraged to discuss and debate COVID and the vaccines. Derailment will result in warnings and strikes, which isn't fun for anyone.

Thank you!

This post will be a work in progress. I'll try to keep it current with the biggest names in the Protocol.

Honestly at least for the playoffs bring it back to the Disney Bubble which worked amazingly in hindsight.

For of all the sacrifices people around the world have made during the pandemic, literally staying in a resort to play ball isn't the worst thing in the world for players, if the other alternative is not playing at all.

Going have to move to the bubble or make it so they can only come to court and hotel room . No more going out

Quoting Richard4444 from the other thread. He's been doing a good job compiling this.

There will be no more bubble. That was the low point for the league.

This thread will inevitably get locked just like the others. If the COVID thread couldn’t even last in the Off-Topic Board then we might as well talk about it on our team boards.

This is really unfortunate and crappy. I made a thread before the season about how the breakthrough cases were going to shut down the NBA again possibly. I hope it doesn’t come down to this.

How can the NBA continue with zero covid though? Will they change the policy to symptomatic? Or just shut down? The NFL has had 75 positives in the last 2 days (I’m guessing Omicron?).

This is gonna suck.

Right now seems to be a lower point, at least the players could actually play.

The Sixers' Georges Niang just got put in the protocol today. It will be interesting to see how this might affect the rest of the team, given that several players (including Embiid, Harris and Thybulle) have all missed several games by contracting COVID.

So, just as the City of Philadelphia is about to institute vaccination verification for local restaurants, similar I guess to what NYC and many parts of Europe have implemented, the Philly Health Dept (sic) has just issued a warning against folks attending any holiday parties, as the infection and hospitalization rates are spiking. In Maryland, just as hospitalizations reportedly have doubled in the past two weeks, the Health system has apparently been hacked, so that they are unable to collect and report on Covid status. Strange times.

Teams are selling out arenas and ratings are the highest they have been since the pandemic started.

No, we are not in a lower point.

I think the bubble was the worst thing to ever happen. Now every time there's an outbreak everybody wants to postpone the season, put guys into a bubble, etc...It's ridiculous. Society is moving forward. Players aren't going to move into a friggin bubble for your entertainment. Seriously man.

It was tough to sell the players on the Bubble the first time going into it. The vast majority of them hated it and complained about it. There is no chance that is happening again. They would never get the players to sign up for that.

Much better chance you will see the NBA go with limited or no fans and a no symptomatic exemption before they ever do the bubble again.

Please no, I won’t watch it if there’s a clear geographical advantage like that.

Worst thing? Without the bubble there would have likely not been a conclusion to the 2020 season.

If players are going to potentially miss games in the playoffs as they are right now, what is the solution then?

Not allowing fans into arenas probably won't do much as I doubt the players are getting covid from the fans in attendance.
